Don Felix Deimonte, Minister of Justice, &. ¢., Attorney General of the Dominican republic, defined the case in these words when I applied to him for the testl- mony of the trial, which, by the way, 18 aii on file at the State Department at Washington: “Mr. Davis Hatch was convicted of conspiring with @ bund of outlaws, then actually in arms on the fronuer, for We overtarow of this government, He made bis house at Barahona—that place veing a military precinct, and of course ail within tt subject to marua) law—a depot for the arms and muuions of those conspirators. This is the only case in which an imprisoned American has received so much attention from the United States Senate; but $50,000 will pay for con- siderable testimony, and may allow some consoling slices to lobbymen out of the loal.
