-RusL ESTATE MATTERS, NNR nee A few day since James W.. Gilles of wus city, purchased /4plendid tract of lana iy" four miles from the Hboken ferry, in Huge ~* County, No, known astle Hudson Cour‘ Agricultural Fair Grounds, cuprising 700 -vfes in all and including tn its Secaucus race track, with the hotel, grand sta/, stadtes and outbaildings. Tne assocta- uon fornfly owning this property was formed seve- ral y ice by W. W. Shippen, Denning Duer, J. D. H. ¥ Nostrand and other prominent gentle- men, g! bas held regular falrs and race meetings every2ar. The track, around which many pleas- ant memories are entwined, has often wit- ness fine and close contests between the high bred chaptons Of our beat racing and trotting stock, and noyowing to the desire of the assoctation to settle up u irs, it was resolved to offer the land and build- ir for sale, and Mr. Gillies, who has been for some ye @ very large operator in real estate in New Jer- Wecame the purchaser. Nearly as large as our foo Fata my 1s one of the largest ota oe ground fer pure , 80 near New York, fy any one pur- tha Masts for its northern boundary the Hack- snsack Plank Road and the Hackensack river ites on the west of it. The Erie Railroad passes through it, also the Delaware, Lackawanna and Western Rail- ‘road, and the Midland Railway skirts 1t on the north. Mr, Gillies can congratulate himself on having a Ae valuable property, and its yn owing to 1 proximity to New York, will ly increase future. This property, which 1s capapie of great im- provement, has been placed under proper manage- ment and will ie improved w its utmost extent at once. The hotel, which on @ beautiful eminence, overlooking the whole country, Newark bay, &c., will be remoaciled and renovated; an eighty foot wide grand drive, extend- ing from the hotel to the Erle Railway, will bemade, and lined with shade ree ‘on both sides. The track will algo be made into a grand park. The water tront on the Hackensack river is most excellent, and the depth of water at this point is forty feet; so that docks can be Seale ate. and freight ‘shipped direst to New York. It is surprising that the ditferent railroads centring on tls property should have allowed it to ve sold, as its ‘er ne as a site for depois, orse and cattle markets, would be great. ince the purchase was talked ot nearly all the ad- joining pro} has been sold to different parties. q ii valle ¢ ot this property at present is estimated at ny a million. Andrew Lind to Max Shaver, 34 CIPAER OPERATIONS DURING THE REBELLION. A Good Suggestion to Congress. {From the Washington Chronicle, June 4.) It is not generally known, but during the war the cipher operators connected with the United States military telegraph under Generals Stager and Eckert, were at all army headquarters.. Their duties were confidential and very important, inasmuch as all military movements ordered by General Grant were transmitted through them. ‘rhey were in possession of mtended army and navy expeditions, some. times weeks before commenced, and, had they not been patriotic and trujy loyal, could have defeated our armies and delayed our final triumph. These quiet, unassuming gentlemen ‘were very poorly paid, and freqneutly not well pro- vided for. However, they did not complain of their hardships, but worked on faithfully until the rev lion was crushed. ‘The operators were not commis- sioned, nor even borne on the army rolls, and having no discharges from the service, will not be remem- vered by the country and their valuable services acknowledged like officers and soldiers as they should be. We think, even at tnis late day,it would be well for Congress to pass an appropriate resolu- tion complimenting the army cipher operators, and thus place them before the country in a proper light, 80 that their names may be held in grateful remem- brance for having by their loyalty and faithful ser- vices contributed to the success of our armies, CITY REAL ESTATE FOR SALE.
