8 THE NATIONAL GAME. ans ‘Mare ve. Eckfords=The Amateurs Again Vic= torious. Yesterday recorded another victory for the ama- teur Star Club, So many victories have lately been recorded for the Star Base Ball Club, collectivelyland §ndividually, m base ball, billiards, skating, glee singing, choir singing, and goodness knows what else, that to decide the question whether this -elub belongs to Brooklyn or that Brooklyn be- Jongs to the Star Club, would be both dimcult and delicate. There is this much that can be said, how- ever, that Brooklyn is nv loser by possessing such fleid of young gentlemen, but if the relationsnip be ‘Uhe other way this compliment cannot be extended. But to the borin From the outset the Eckfords ‘were beaten, both in feiding and batting, the result of all which was to prevent the infusion of any inte- Test in the contest, so faras spectators were con- cerned. In justice to the Eckfords (and in connec- tion with ‘the former remarks truth de- manas the assertion that = Wilhamsburg is no loser in __ possessin, such @ club), it must be stated that thelr catcher, Price, was 80 disabled in the opening of the second fnning by a sharp foul-tipped ball striking him in the eye that he was compelled to withdraw, and a Mr. ‘Denning subsiituted, James Snyder taking Price’s post and Denning going to right flela, This accident worked to the disadvantage of the Ec! fords, who also lost one hand out because of the new Comer uot striking i bis turn immediately afier coming in, The game was a hard played one, but too uneven to merit detailed characterization, Below ts the full score:— = EOKFORD. Club, game ‘Two hours and twenty minutes, Base Ball Notes, On Wednesday the Socials of this city defeated the Enterprise of Brooklyn at the Elysian Fields, Ho- boken, with a score of 28 to 14, On Tuesday last the Gramercy and Lexington clubs of this city played a game at Melrose, which the latter won, with a score of 42 to 32, Mr. Ferguson, of the Atlantic Club, not content with threatening to perform a summary and anpro- fessional dental operation on the base ball represon- tative of the HERALD, has avowed his determination tw demolish the representative of the Tribune, and all because the HERALD dared to tell the truth ree ‘ting Mr. Ferguson and his actions in the Atlan- ic-Forest City game, The remarks which aroused the ire of Mr. Ferguson are the foliowing:— Ferguson, the captain of the Atlantice, was formeriy, a quiet, hard-working meniber of the, ning; but since be n crowned with a “little brief authority” he lords it over his men in an insultingly demonstrative and domineering way that cannot fail to wound the feelings of the nine, make them sulky and judifferent and act agalust the interests and suocess of the club. He may mean well enough in talking to his men as he often does, but his manner is certainly not calcu- lated to win the respect of his nine or the admiration of the spectaiors. His reputation as @ temperate and gentlemanly ball player has heretofore been very high, but his intemperate actions and demonstrations since the Forest Giiy game can only result in sully- ing materially his formencredit. In_ justice to Mr. Piccot, aud for the information of Mr. Ferguson, 1t may be stated that the former gentleman is not the author of the articles which have aroused the pugnacious proclivities of the captain of the Atlantle mine. The Red Stocking Club, of Cincinnatl, beat the Har- vard Club, of Boston. yesterday, the score being Red Stock ings 46, Harvards 15. The Forest City Club, of Rockford, Ill., defeated the Pastiine Club, of Baitimore, yesterday afternoon, the score standing 21 to 11, The ground was im bad con- dition, owing to the recent rains, and the playing was only ordinary throughout the game. a ET MARRIAGES AND DEATHS.
