Interests—Re- sources and Value of the Territory— “Heading Off’ American Inter- ests—Cotton Lands end @ Coaling Station. By the Australian mall through Europe we have our files from Auckland and Wellington, New Zea- land, dated to the middie of'November, 1869. The journais give muon space and attention to vhe sub- Ject of the future government and rule of the Fejee Islands, suowing forth the anxiety which 1s evinced by the great European Powers to obtain a secure foothold in the antipocal territory and thus “head off” the American advance and tutorcommu- nton tn that direction from California and vice versa. ‘TEE FEJEES—THEIR RESOUROES AND PROSPECTS. [From the Ovago (N. %.) They are of tie wrong kind, and I look to the French as the Sature provable owners ES A petition from the Germans here to the North German government, ets oes to take possession, has been extensively Big Another bas just gone to tue Haglish gov- eriment. The white Population and interests wil goon claim some adequate protection. If we could throw off our allegiance, and fignt our own batties, we might hope by policy to hold our own; but whe declining to protect us our respective governments Would soon in’erlere if we presumed to try to pro- tect ourselves. However, be the present, lam glad to say all is peace, and we have no need of protec- tion by force at this moment; but, witn the number of white settlers coming in, I fear this cannot last. The natural tear it wil excite among the natives that they are going to be outnumberea will of itself, in their ignorance, be likely to excite feelings of hostility. NATIVE MEMORIAL TO GREAT BRITAIN—ANNEXATION O# AN ENGLISH PROTECTORATE—WHAT QUEEN VIC- TORIA WOULD Gal Subjoined will be found a copy of the memorial addressed to the British Secretary of State for the Colonies, by the inhabitants or Feyee, towards the close of 1869, praying either for annexation to Great Bnitain or tor the establishment of a protectorate. Annexed to it is a copy of the document, in which the memorialists set forth the reasons which should >perate with the imperial government to comply arith the prayer of thelr petition:— MEMORIAL, To the Right Honorable the Karl GRANVILLE, ber Majesty’s Secretary of State for Colonial Affairs: — The memorial of the undersigned, native aud foreign residents of Viti, huinbly showeth— ‘That ata pubhe meecing Weld at Levuka, Ovalau, Viui, on the 14th June instant, to consider the expe- qiency of memorializing the American or sume other’ government, with the object of inducing it to take this group of islands under 13 protecuoa dl flag, it was proposed and carried by @ large and most influential majority. “That the present condi- tion of Viti renders 1 1mperative upon this. commu- nity, essentially British, to at once memorialize, in conjunction with the dominant chiefs of Vitl, the British government, with the object of obtaining for this.group of islands cither annexauon to Great Britam or the adjacent colonies, or the. establisn- ment of a protectorate flag and interest, but par- sicularly annexation to the Australian colonies, to which, by their geographical position and undoubted future importance, they appear destined to be anited.”, it ‘please your Lordship, therefore, to Jay be- fore her Majesty’s government the accompanying document, which your Lordship’s memorialists trust ‘will move it to an altentive consideration of this second invitation to add Viti to other British depen- dencies in Australasia. And your Lordship’s memorialists, as in duty bound, will ever pray, &c. CAUSES AND PROFITS OF THE MOVEMENT, The memorialists humbly -sbow. that 1n the year 7 the cession of the vith Islands to Great Britain a8 proposed and offered by the united’ chiefs and iandowners ar Nit, and Colonel Smythe was com- missioned by his Grace the Duke of Newcastle to proceed hither and report upon the eapabuities of the group, and the expediency of her Majesty's gov- ernment accepting the offer, The principal reasons at that timo urged for ac- cepting the sovereignty of tu Itt were: First—That the group woul good station for mall steamers ranving between Panama fina'oua Sydney. ‘Second. they would olfer a supply of cotton, And in conjunction with the first reason that their position was important to the national power and security in the Pacific ocean, ‘The result of the commission appeared to estan- lish the impolicy of annexing tne isiauds. In Viti rumors have already been heard of annexation by other Powers than Britain, and boih Natives and settlers, mutually tired of the present state of things, are prepared (0 accept the protection of almost any one of the great Powers that will interest itself for their welfare. In 1859 the question asked by the government of Colonel Stuythe was, “Whether or not Viti ought to be addad to the numeroug colonial possessions of Great Britain trom the same motives of ordinary expedi- ency which direct the general national policy?” The reply, a stated in the preface, was in the negative. Opara, now in the possession of. the French, was recommentied 28 a coaitng station.
