FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL, THURSDAY, Oot, 21—6 P. M. Gold emerged to-day from its dulness and became Multe active, the price at one time touching 131, advance for the day of one per cent, whiob, con jering the limited character of speculation in the recious metal, 18 a rather remarkable change. The ‘Figo was based upon the firmer tone of the foreign exchanges last night and at the opening of business ‘this morning, the foreign bunkers being large buyers ‘of bills to cover the coupons of government bonds held abroad. Again, the action of the Gold Ex- change Bank, im releasing 26 per cent of the moneys due to its customers, who for the most part are brokers in the Gold Room, was instrumental in enabling many to resume dealings, and thus in & ‘measure set the wheels of speculation in motion ‘once more. At the same tune, as if by a sequence jot this liquidation of indebtedness one, of the firms favticn were competied to suspend in the gold panic Paid the claims against them and resumed business. ‘Whe receiver of the bank at the close of bysiness \Go-day had paid twenty-tlve per cent of ail clans, Pipe those originally thrown out and comprising Yghe accounts of nine firms, Later in the day there ras @ reaction in the market and the price went off eo 100%. The following shows ule range of quota- ions:— 130% 2P.M.. 130i 2:97 2. M. Ly c . i sll 6 P.M, 1iu% & ish Loans of cash gold were made at five to four per Went for carrying. the Deutschland, for Europe, took Dut $40,000 in specie. ‘The money market wos more active, and six and ®oeven per cent were the prevailing rates on call Joans, although the government dealers were excep- ionaily supplied at five. There ts @ steady outow of curregcy to U Southern States ta exchange tor the cotton crop, but,the accurfiulation of capital is ‘Btll 60 large at’ this centre that the effect is but Blightly perceptible im the rates on call. The Gemand from the Wost is not active, although the grain movement continues, and the explanation \Probably lies in the fact that Western debtors are Bending wheat to tueir Eastern creditors, the latter complaining of the diMculty of making collec- tions. The West 13 yet largely in debt to fhe East from iast winter and spring, and the crops now coming are doudtiesa being shipped fo mect these oid claims, Hence the hght remit- tances of currency westward. While the rate on Call 13 easy discouuts are dull and prime paper can- Bot be sold except at figures which would astound Old time merchants. Some of the best endorsed dry 0008 paper weut to-day at twelve per cent discount, @nd the range takes the wide extremes of ten to Aittosn per cent for the very best acceptances. Towards the close of the day there was less firmness In the foreign exchanges, and although the nominal quotation ier prime bankers’ sixty day bills was 109}, sales took place at 10934, The rise in gold and the fail in the home price of government Gecuritics allows shipments of the latter to “Wurope, and the exchange market doubtless felt Sho effect of the offerings of bond bills, The lower price for cotton, combined with the rise in gold, also @nabled free exports of the staple and also contri- ‘Duled to the supply of billa, The government bought one million of bonds for the sinking fund, the whole lot being obtained at 115.20 “dat,” The offer- fags being over five millions assisted the decline ‘@augurated by the large offerings to the govern- Ment yesterday, and as @ consequence the whole Doarkes was lower, but steady at tue new schedule of prices, a3 & coasequence, tn turn, of the firmer tone of the gold market. Southern securities were Quiet, except for the Tennesseos, which were steady, ud the Nortn Carolinas, which were actively weak, ‘the special tax bonds going of to 43, In the stock market there was during tne fore- noon @ maintenance of the high prices of yesterday, but after meridian the course of speculation ohanged, and under a pressure to realize the market broke down, the lowest prices being made after the last call of the board, The sales to realize were Quite perceptible in the Vanderbilt stocks, New York Central going off trom 194 to 190}s, and Harlem from 148 to 144. Lake Shore again absorbed @ great deal of attention and ductuated between 93 and 94%. The meeting Of the directors takes place to-morrow at Cleveland, aud among the business to be ats- gassed is the project of consolidation with the ‘Wabash Ratiroad. It was also rumored that the directors were to receive # proposition from the New York Central Company for the release of the Lake Shore, but on what terms is not stated, Some color of truth is given this assertion by the fact that Commodore Vanderbilt and a party of New York Central men left Albany yesterday on a special train for Clevelan!, Erie continues to feel the depressing Anfluences of the strike on the road. In the Western railways St. Paul was active at 70%. In the miscel- lanoous list Pacific Mail’suddenly assumed buoyancy and soid as high as 613 in consequence of negotia- tions said to be in progress witu the Panama Rail- ‘way Uompany for a new tariff of charges, which ‘will inure to the benefit of the steamship line, ‘The Lake Shore directors have contracted to sell two militons of bonds to meet any deficiency aris- ing from the fatiure of Lockwood & Co. As the bonds are yet to be engraved they have sola con- tracts for them through the Union ‘Trust Company, the price obtained being eighty-five cents on the Gollar. The bonds expire in ten years and are pro- Vided for by a sinking fund of ten per cent annually. ‘The following were the closing prices of stocks at the last session of the Board:—Uanton, 53 a 54; Cumberland, 284 a 233%; Western Union, 364 a 36%; Quicksilver, 125 a 135¢; Mariposa, 834 a 83g; do. pre- ferred, 16% 17; Pacific Mail, 68% 468%; Boston ‘Water Power, 14 @ 15; Adams Express, 57%; ‘Wells-Fargo Express, 2044 a 20%; American Ex- Press, 35% @ 3644; United States Express, 67 a 6794; Merchants’ Unton Express, 94 @ 12; New ‘York Central, 191; Erie, 31'¢ @ 3134; do. preferred, BAsg A 5635; Milde River, 1724} Harlom, 145% @ 1.
