Central Park Garden a ila Parie—Soirce Dansante by a Company of the Unknown— The Light Fantastic Tee im the “Cancan.” Thomas’ Central Park Garden concert hall was full of glittering terest last night, Unostentatious advertisements and artfully contrived notices had announced for some days that there would be @ grani soirée dansante in the large ballroom, apd tat tickets were for sale, #2 each, At about ten o'clock the gents began to assemble in the barroom and lobbies, and soon the apartments were filled by a thick fog of smoke, which now and then was pierced by pene- trating oaths and loud imprecations on the unpro- pitions weather, The crowd was jolly, The pros pects flushed the cheek of each individual— that 18, uf gin is included therein. The gents called loudly for drinks, the walters were in lively demand, and everything few ike hot cakes. “Ten whiskeys” was the call of one party that gathered about a small centre table and poured the rum down with asmack of satisfaction, The gurgluig sound of mauy drinkers continued al} the fore part of the evening, and the clink of glasses and the usual wild hilarity with vhe succeeding accustomed weakness of a few of the poor uniortunage, to support too much, were part of the exhibitions constantly revolving tn and about Ue building. THE ENTRES OF THE GRACES. Ata little after eleven Thomas’ orchestra strick up the opening march, and the first vevy of twenty-five graces descended from the large pariors overhead and began the promenade down the foor. The reception commiltee, simply distinguished by a White badge and maintaining a mysterious (7 cognito, did their honors well and paid their guests every attention demanded by the strictest rules o1 etiquette. Likewise did the floor Wanagers, with red and gold colors. The bail opened with a quadriile, played to a lively alr, and as the hall was but thinly flied at te outset the music and confused echoes of the unfilled space made the great structure tremble with grand vibra- tions, The Graces had no wall flowers. ‘The cos- tumes were elegant~in many cases unique and in more libidmows. At the outset the passion for thar peculiar twirl of the cancan was conspicuous, and at last became the distinguishing feature of the whole ball. THE SENSATIONS. When the first galop was brought out on tne floor 4 Small, little, piquante Woman appeared tn a cos- tume that could have been none other than her own invention. There waa a clear sweep from canning jittle Shoes to the knee, where a pair of ught-fitung vrousers encircled her to the waist, whence she was girdled by @ mixture of velvet, gold lace, flowers and fantastic ruimies. On her head sat a jaunty bat and on her face au inviting smile. Other works of art paraded the room with regal airs, Some were finished in the latest Parisian enamel, and others only 1p plain rouge. One set used the ordinary lip salve, aud another disdained anything short of the carmine dye. Of Grecian bends there were few; but of airs there were many. ‘They were gay aud reckless, and drank long and often; and as they gathered nerve with fresh potations the scene became more animated and the uproar more universal, Their gallants, who were among the bloods of the city, did their share towards tne “flow of soul,” and shortly after midnight many began to seek the open air to work off a feeling akin to sea- sickness. The waltz was the favorite—this only, of course, being convenient name for the chaste caucan— and tbe Cyprians would have had it written:— Precious cancan, to thy more melting tune Bow Insh jig and ancient jigadoon; Scotch reels avaunt, and country dance forego Your future claims to each fantastic toe. ‘The festivities and hilarity were continued till the 4 large hours of the morning, with the usual number of rows, but without any serious injury to the morality of the majority of those who attended. “THE LAST OF THE SEASON." Richmond Club Clanibake—Big Men, Eating and a Jolly Time. Since the Acquackannocks, tn ail the glory of their red paint and primitive costunres, wandered in “freedom wild’ over Staten Isiand, warring against brother savages that dared to “paddie their own canoes” from the Jersey shores, that land has been preemineutly noted for its unique outdoor euter- tamments, chief among thei clam bakes and clam chowders, But yesterday the “last of the season” was held on the grounds of the Richwond County Clab, at New Dorp. The weather was not of a fitting nature to greet the visitors on such an occasion; but where jolly boys like the company congregated leave home for @ clambake the weather is of no account. Upon invitation of the club, jurists, merchants, bankers, journalists and seniimentai fledglings trom Wali street met to “eat, drink and be merry.” The repre- sentation was characteristic. Everything was deliciously free. “Open house here.’ Cuowder was prepared in the morning aud landed to we early comers that their appetites might be developed, and champagne followed in abundance te help digestion. All stood at the rack, ‘fodder or no fod- der.’ Awatting the last process in cooking the “bakes” a trot was improvised between two road horses. One noted steamship owner bet an ex- Judge, “just to be considered a sport,” one dollar that the bay would beat the chestnut, and a com- mittee of three was appointed to ascertain if there occurred ‘‘any drinking between heats” or “tam- pering with the judges.’ That the history of the turf may be Correct it 1s advised that the gentleman that bet h ‘mouey on the bay" lost badly. . Then came the bake, Erastus Brooks sat pr a-vis with E, 0. Perrin, Judge Slosson, representa. tive of Staten isiand’s “buoyant boyhood,” locked arms with Mr. Wyeth, with that “little transaction” still on his mind, while Captain Decker, M. P., aud ex-Judge Russell, With @ hungry lot of Bokemians sandwiched between many gentlemen, surrounded the tables, where they cracked shells, tore asunder lobsters, peeled potatoes, stripped corn and carved chickens—eating to their hearts’ convent and ‘all stomachs’ capacity of one of the juciest, jol- lest, spiciest and most savory Clam bakes that ever greeted anxious men near the sea shore. Then sentiment and song, ‘The journalist spoke and told ory. The old poutician taughed and ran his fingers through his hair; the young legisiator indulged in remmiscences, thickly, ‘tis true, bul enjoyable, Spear, the robust, a fit candidate for membership of the “fat men’s asso- ciation,” sang, with Sar, a ditty that drowned the gentle murmurings of the “sad sea Waves,” evoking woplause that surely disturbed the quietude of the mermaids chat watch over the bappiness of the “old men of New Dorp.” There was abundance and to Spare, 30 much so that some of the young men of correct principies pocketed “Roderer,” while the munificent host pocketed the loss, It was @ reunion full of bubbling bliss: a reunion that Mr. Simonson can feel repaid him for his care, Kindoess and self-denial, GROOKLYN INTELLIGENCE, A ULexk IN DrrFiouury.—Aaron Marka, a dealer in shoes, &c., at No, 41 Myrtie avenue, procured a warrant yesterday from Justice Welsh for the arrest of D.
