Nor was this Confined to the five-twenttes, but was shared by the Other issues, the eiatire list falling off 44 to X per cent. In the afternoon the market was somewhut improved on the ten-forties and the currency sixes, but the tive-twenties were mostly at their lowest late in the day, and duil, The followiug were the closing prices at five o’clock:—United States sixes, 1831, registered, 123!¢ a 124; do. do, coupon, 12334 a 124; do. five-twenties, registered, 12236 a 122%; do. do., coupon, 1862, 125% a 124; do. do., coupon, 1864, 12255 a 12274; do. do., coupon, 1865, 122% a 12274; do. do., coupon, new, 1865, 12155 a 121%; do. do., coupon, 1367, 12134 a 121%; do. do., coupon, 1863, 12144 a 12194; do. ten-forties, registered, 111% @ 112; do. do., coupon, 114% @ 116; currency bonds, 110% a 110%. “ The money market is beginning to exhibit sigas of that disturbance m the mouetary ease of the great Lastern financial centres, which results from the yoarly tidal efilux of currency to the agricul- tural districts to aid in the movement of thelr sta- ble products, Already the banks report shipments of currency to’ the Southwest, although of small amounts, Cincinnati being the principal point as yet to which these shipments have been directed, which may be regarded as indicating the inception of the grain movement in the middie and border States, As yet the sums culled for have been too inconsid- erable to exert any imiucnce upon the Market here, and with the heavy = dis- Dursements of the ‘Treasury for the next two weeks on account of bonds purchased, are un- likely to be felt tor some time, Tne demand for cur- rency to-day was easily met at previous rates on cali loans, although transactions at five per cent are be- ginning to be exceptional, and six and seven per cent may be regarded as the ruling rates, Discounts @re dull at from 7 to 9 per cent. ‘The gold market was dull to-day, with a further de- cline in the premium, The price opened at 125%, from which it fell off to 4, but rallied again to 34, continuing steady between these figures, 13514 to 1854; until after two o'clock, when it touched 13534, falling off later and closing in the room at 1853. After the adjournment of the board the price fell off to 135, and with intervals of recovery stood at that figure at the close of basiness. In the loan market the raves for carrying indicate an increase of the short interest, ranging from five and ahalfdown to three per ceni before Clearing House time, Subsequently five aud seven per cent were paid. The steamer Kusaia to-day took out $265,000 in specie, and engagements for over $390,000 are reported for 10-morrow’s steamer. The follow- ing table shows the range of gold during the day and the price at stated hours:— The decline in the premium was attributed to the fatlure of the Cavinet to take any action upon the Cuban question, as it was expected they would at the meeting yesterday. The transactions of the Gola Exchange Bank were:—Gross clearings, $46,828,000; gold balances, $2,676,178; currency bal- ances, $3,635,475. Foreign exchange is,dull and unchanged In rates, the produce bills expectod upon the late heavy pur- chases made on foreign account, as it was stated, not having made their appearance in the market. , We quote:—Sterling, sixty days, commercial, 10914 ® 100%; bankers’, good to prime, 109% a 11014; short sight, 110% 4 1105/; Paris, sixty days, 5.18% 85.13%; short sight, 5.12/40 5.114; Antwerp, 5.18%, 8 6.1337; Switzerland, 6,183¢ a 5,153; ; Hamburg, 3534 a 35%; Amsterdam, 4074 @ 4034; ltrankfort, 4014 a 407%; Bremen, 783g @ 7934; Prussian thalers, 7037 a 7144. Rock Island on the other hand exhibited asudden and considerable advance based upon rumors of par- chases on account of the Pennsylvania Central Rail- road with doveloggiignis d ia Furi Wayne in the dis- tance. The Vanderbilt shares were exceptions to the generally erratic course of the other features and firm, in aconfident feeling that the meeting of the York Central and Hudson River Rail- rond qiygetors at Saratoga to-day ili résult in the accomplishment of the iong promisca consolidation of these roads. Pacific Mail was in sympathy with the railway list and feverish during the day, with a downward tendency in the after. noon. St. Paul stocks were also weak.
