FINANCIAL “AND COMMERCIAL, WEDNESDAY, May 26-6 P.M. ‘Phe features of interest in Wall strect to-day were ‘#fo)] in gold to 1390/4 and a very determined “bear? ettack upon the stock market, The opening price of gold was in the vicinity of 140%. From this point thore was @ steady decline to the point first indl- cated. The cliques, with one or two exceptions, have sold their gold, and tho market is settling to lower figures as a consequence of this influence, as well as through the natural reaction from the recent excited advance, There is no action Without reaction. Values in Wall street and in the world generally seek to pre- werve their equilibriam. When gold went up it set free a vast quantity of produce and exportable goods which were lying in the lofts of our commission shipping houses, These have made exchange bills plentiful, and specie shipments seem more remote by several weeks, while it is not a very Jong time to the Ist of July, when the government ‘will disburse another heavy instalment of gold in- terest on the five-twenties. Some shrewd statistt- cians have aiso discovered that the balance of trade for the fiscal year ending June 30, if not in our favor, will not be very largely against us. Then, again, the attitude of General Grant in the matter of the Ala- bama claims is one which ‘dissipates every chance of trouble with Great Britain. The “street? is talk- ing lower gold. They re-echo what the cliques say, other by thelr mutua: doubts 11 thelr “long” gold and go to make up any losses which juenced by the cliques. The latter have the capital to force the smaller operators into their ranks or to rnin them if they rebel, Thelr recent somersault in the market was beauti‘ully performed, It may be that the change was dictated by a really sagacious foresight of present events. If not, then the luck which attends tneir operations is something curious, for how else can we regurd the fortuitous coincl- dence with t schemes of General Grant’s policy and like cireumstances inimical to an advance in The report that Secretary Boutwell three per cents was also used, trifling ight be, its induence in depressing the © disbursements of coin interest to-day The course of the market is shown in the appended table:— + 140% + 140% price. T Were $181,663. c s heavy, and borrowers of gold es carried over for them were com- low seven and eight per cent interest on ‘This was the average range was done as low assix and yat three per cent. The report of the $0,808,000 1,696, 13 Governmeuts were heavy and lower. Before the government purchase they were steady, if not etrong, which is rather suspiciously interpreted in sthe strect, The London price came 7934, an im- provement, but with a report of duiness, due to the Bemi-holiday ensuing upon the Epsom races. The decline in gold later In the day abstracted whatever firmness was communicated from this source, end left the market to the “bears, who now Anclude some of the prominent banking houses on Wall street. The three per cent Btory was used to hammer the market, and the 62's were foreed down to 12135 end the ‘07's to 11844. In fact, the speculative move- ments of the gold and government markets have been and are precisely similar and parallel.
