GERMANY. Protest of King George of Hanover. The following protest has been addressed by King George of Hanover to ag German sovereigns, against the sequestration of his family property by the Prus- sian government:— Monsieur Mon FreRe—Being fully aware of the in- terest your Majesty kindly takes in affairs and those of my royal house, I have taken the liberty, in my let- ter of April 8 of last year, to inform your Majesty of the protest which I was obliged at that time to lay against the ordinance of his Majesty the King of Prassia, of March 2, 1868, which sequestrates the property of my house that is within the range of Prussian power. In that letter Ihave shown, in an irrefutable manner, the evident injustice of that ordinance, and the groundiessness of the accusa- tions by which the royal Prussian governmeut tried to pailiate its proceedings. I beg leave to repeat briefly here once more that the accusations of supporting a legion on French soil, and of provoking hostilities on my part against the Prussian State, break down by themselves, The Hanoverians, who withdraw from the Prussian milt- tary service, sought at first “an asylum in Holland, then in Switzerland. In both these countries Prus- sian influence succeeded in rendering their sojourn impossible. They then went to France, whose hos- pitable soil gave the same protection to them as to Other political refugees. It is, however, impossible to form in times of peace upon the territory of another Power a ijegion with hostile intentions against a third Power. And how could a number of about 700 to 800 persons, all of them, besides, en- aol unarmed, endanger the safety of a State like ? How is it possible that in Berlin the ne- conte of self-defence could be asserted ? This much only is true, that I have not left these Political refageea unaasisted. ‘The other accusation mentioned provocations on May part to hostilities ust the Prussian State. It referred to a speech, in which I had expressed my confidence in God and in my right, at a family feast in the midst of my guests and those belonging to me. Nobody can, and no one will, prevent me testi- fying this confidence; as it has not been the firet time I did so, neither will it be the last. Both accusations on the part of Prussia were therefore unfounded. Butsupposing even that they Were well founded, the charges made therein against me didin no way ailect the obligations which } had undertaken by the property treaty of September 29, 1867. For this treaty has been concluded, up to dates of sailing. The contingent of 100,000 men was unanimously -voied in the sitting of the French Senate on the 9th anst. Dr. Jackson, on the Sth inst., was formally en- throned as Bishop of London, in St. Paul's Cathe- dral. The mandate was executed by Dean Manse!, with the usual formaiities, and the several oMicers of the cathedral made the customary promise of oanon- cal obedience. The dliferences between the directors of the Royal Italian Opera, Covent Garden and Mile. Nilsson ‘have been satisfactorily arranged. She will appear st Covent Garden early in May. it was reported in Paris on the Sth that the Figaro ‘was seized, and that several public meetings were forcibly dissolved, owing to the violence of the lan- guage made use of by the orators. There was a brilliant ball at the Chinese Embassy, Shue del bei Respiro, Paris, given on the night of the ih inst. by Mr. Burlingame, ree stories of the hotel were thrown open for the reception of the s, among whom were all the American nota- as weil as of the Parisian world, There appear to have been disturbances having ® republican origin in Roumania. The Common Council of Bucharest was dissolved on Thursday, the Sth inst., by Prince Charles, on account of its “revolutionary attitude during the elections.” The Levant Herald says that the Cretan chiefs who have been for some months in prison for taking part im the late insurrection have at length been sen- tenced to fifteen years’ imprisonment, with hard labor, and several of them have already been trans- ferred to the gaol where they are to undergo their punishment. The Brussels correspondent of the Herald says that there is a hitch in the pourpariers going on at Paris between the Belgian Premier and the French government. The return of M. Frére-Orban, who was fully expected back by this time to submit to the king and tothe government the names of the Belgian members to the mixed commission, is de- layed till a period still undetermined. “Most of the sovereigns of Europe,” says the Paris Constitutionnel, “have charged their repre- sentatives to offer their congratulations to the Pope on the llth April. Nine mills, including several of the largest, are entirely stopped, and others are ranning snort time. It is stated that the Poor jaw oficials are oyerburdened with appli- ations for relief, and that the appointment of as- sistant relieving officers will be necessary. The Levant Herald makes the announcement that Miss Bardett Coutts has proposed to provide Jerusa- Jem with an efficient system of water supply at her own cost, and gays the scheme which embodies the details of her munificent offer has been laid before the Council of State. The Preston cotton strike is likely to go on. The masters generally insist upon the adoption of the wheel system, and the men are equally determined to resist it. This step will greatly extend the dimen- sions of the struggle, and from 6,000 to 7,000 weavers, 4n addition to those previously out, will be added to the large number idle yniess some of the masters withdraw “the Blackburn wheel,”” The Jovrnai de Paris contains the following about the rumored triple alliance:— It appears that M. de Beust has thought fit himself to deny the rumor of a Franco-Austro-Italian alliance. The Correspondant de Nuremberg, on the faith of a letter from Vienna, announces that tne Chancellor of the empire has just sent to the repre- sentatives of Austria abroad a circular in whicu he shows whet little foundation there is for the reporis circulated respecting that alliance, and affirms that “the Austro-Hungarian monarch, far from tuinking of launching into enterprises full of peril, endeavors, as far as it can, to assure the Maintenance of peace, of which Austria stands in such sore need.” What is very curious is that the Press of Vienna an- mounced on the same day that, following the example of the Auswian Premier, the Itallan Prest- pet M. Menabrea, had also despatched a circular to hia agents abroad to den rumors of the Bliance. According to the P Vienaa the cir. cular of Menavrea is co “th ju exacily the same Yeriis a2 that of Baron Bact preliminary negotiations, declared expressly and decidedly that I would never admit any condition of @ political nature, and when the crown of Prussia, during the course of the negotiations once more tried to introduce a political condition, I refused to consent, referring simpiy to that declaration which I had ire before the beginning of the negoiia- tions. In consequence whereof the crown of Prus- eee tus condition without the slightest ob- jection, I thought myself, therefore, justified in hoping that his Majesty the King of Prussia wouid, after due and impartial appreciation of the established facts, and Yielding to that sentiment of justice which never dies entirely, return towards the fulfilmeat of the treaty, which I on my part have fulfiiled in its whole extent and in the most honest manner, by immedi- ately handing over to the Prussian plenipotentiaries the ied of value, to the amount of nearly $19,000, on which had been sent safely to England. This h ope seemed to be the more justifiable, a3 the ordinance of March 2, 1863, left it open to the Kin, of Prussia to re-establish the violentiy-disturbed state of iaw and equity at his own option. But my confidence ih the loyalty of the Crown of Prussia was again sadly disappointed. The Crown of Prassta has not kept open the way to re-establisi: a legal state of things, or, rather, it did not wish to do so, It placed tie said ordinance before the Prus- Sian Diet, which, supported by the Prassian govern- ment, still added the proviso that the sequestration of my family property could not be taken off, except by Way of legisiation, that 18, by the common con- oo of the government and the two houses of the tes. The first adviser of the Prussian Crown haa pleaded for this new act of violence at the Diet. Part of the accusations by which he has done ny are but a repetition, without any proof, of the tended facts of a legion and the provocation of Ulities, which [have mentioned above, in conjunc: tion with Ure equally renovated fletion of conditions and suppositions of the property treaty of Septem: r 2, 1807, which, by the spirit aa weil as by the tex of the treaty, are proved not to exist. ‘The other partof the accusations are inventions of similar valine, They are those of the existence of a com- mittee in Heitzing hostile to Prassta, which does not exist, nor never has existed; then of the attempt to recruit Poles in Switzerland. These statements are so inconsistent that they do not waut to be seri- ously contradict it 1s also below my dignity to mention the way and the manner in which the first adviser of the Crown of Prassia has brought forward these frivo- lous accusations, J only state the fact that smpertal Europe has loudly proclaimed its indfynation; and [ can ouly express iy regret that, on the pari of his Majesty the King of Prussia, no disapprobation of ENGLANI The Hudson Bay Comp: torial Rights to Canada, [From the Londoa fime The liudson Ba any Bilarge majority (be terms | sed by Lord Gran- thé hehavior of the first adviser of the © Jrown has Ville for the Geslon of thelr territorial rights to | come to iy Klowledgs, Canada, We believe the shareholders have mad¢ @ His Majesty the art of Prussia giv ing his saue- thoroughly good bargain, byt mot the joss 1§ thé 4 tlon to Poject of jaw concerning the sequest decision creditable to thelr common Sense, for there | Won of my family property has created an obstacle was much both (o try thelr temper and misiead their | On that road which still permitte! him a return to ludgment.
