@AYOR’S OFFICE. ‘The a of the Mayor's Office has come Yo partake of character of a Mayor's court, and every day at noon the bland blonde represents the Mayor in a “marshal” manner. Yesterday there were a couple of complaints against UNFORTUNATE PAWNBROKERS. One John Godfrey, who keeps a shop at No, 304 Grand street, was complained of by Mrs. Ohristina Behlee, of No, 65 Eldridge street. Mrs, Schiee eharged that she pawned several articles, for which she received three dollars. On presenting the ticket to redeem the articles she was told they had been gold to a Mr. Lederer, of No. 429 East Ninth street. Mr. Godfrey was sent for by the Marshal and eraered. to make return to the complaint w-day at noon. Julius Walser entered a complaint against Abra- bam Horn, of 390 Seventh avenue, charging that he bad pawned @ watch for twenty dollars, on which he ‘was to pay interest at ten per cent a month, but that on calling to redeem the watch could not ob- tain it. Mr. Horn was ordered to answer on Monday, at noon. Elias Tannenholz, of No. 28 Market street, against ‘whom complaint was made a few days ago for charg- ing fifty cents interest for nine months on goods for Which the total amount due should be only $1 50. ‘The Marshal ordered Mr. Tannenholz to deliver the goods for $1 50, BXCHANGE OFFICES @o not always escape the scourge of the Marshal. ‘Thomas Farr appeared this morning before the Mar- shai and charged that he went to the exchange oilice of Joseph Loew at 142 Liberty street, and gave $510 in greenbacks to get English gold for it. He sailed = Liverpool on the Sist ult., and while aboard the the captain toid him he had been defrauded out = forty sovereigns. It appears he had received the Fed number of coins, but instead of sovereigns, been given half sovere: ‘The captain sent him back ona Pilot boat and he ap} at the Mayor’s fice and complained as stated, Officer McGrath ‘was despatched with Mr. Farr to wait on Loew who appeared to be much astonished a: losing on his bigh game. Knowing that ie would be bandied without gloves, Loew refunded to Mr. Farr $235, THE LOAN OFFICE. Abomination is very frequently brought out by eomplaints at the Marshal's desk. The latest case is that of J. Macduff, keeper of a loan office at No, 77 Bleecker street. Macduf is represented as being a e@harp customer and one who knows how to “lay =_ the charges. The complaint was made by a Mr. M. J. Dougherty, who stated that he purchased a Joan ticket for a diamond ring; that he called for the ting, which was at Macdufl’s place, and was told by ‘the latter that it was worth about $140 or $145. He =e $125 and got the ring. On having it examined an expert he was assured that it was not worth more than $75, He applied to Macduff and asked to have his money refunded, but the latter would a gata article as he did the first ‘The “loan office” business is carried on quite ex- tensively in this city, and with most wonderful ‘mmpunity, under all sorts of nomenciatures, sucn as diamond brokers and dealers in valuable jewelry, works of art and the like. Although complaints of sharp dodges to “beat” customers are often made, there appears to be no method by which the nefarious business can be reached or managed and unfortunate pledgers protected against the sharp- Bess and Shylockism oi the — lenders. BOARD OF ASSISTANT ALDEAME: ALDERMEN. The Bourd met yesterday, the President, Mr. Monaghan presiding. On motion a number of resolutions respecting the opening of uptown streets were referred w the Committee on Street Upenings, BERGIAN PAVEMENT. The Croton Aqueduct Department was directed to pave Fifty-sixth street, from Filth to Sixth ave- Bue, with Belgian pavement. DONATIONS. The Comptroller was directed to draw his warrant im faVor of the following churches aud associations to enable them to pay for assessments on their perty:— Eniter Presbyterian church, Seventh avenae. $292 00 New York Infirmary for Women and Children 179 75 Pastor of the Church of the Holy Innocents... 562 25 Ohurch of the Assumption...... + 459 13 Fifty-third street Bapust church.. + 637 09 St. Stephen's Orphan Home (to be apphed io the funds of the institution). 3,000 00 St. Andrew’s chureh...... + 634 86 A NEW BULKHEAD. / The Comptroller was direcved to advertise for pro- posais to bulld a bulkhead at the foot of Forty-sev- eath street, East river, COMMUNICATION FROM THE COMPTROLLER. A communication was received from the Comp- trofer giving a list of the contracts made by the Corporation and deposited in his office during the year 1868, together with a statement showing the amount paid upon each contract and the condition of the respective work at the end of the year. The ‘usual number of copies of this document will be printed. Kesolutions eulogistic of the late ex-Alderman John Pettigrew were adopted, after which the Board adjourned, THE HOS YARDS. The Examination Before the Referee Yester- day. A further hearing was had yesterday before Re- ferce Hasbrook in the case of the Board of Health against Allerton Brothers for the abatement of the business of yarding swine on Eleveuth avenue, be- tween Thirty-ninth and Forty-first streets.. Ira A. Allen, israel H. Gerry and others doing business in the locality testified that as at present conducted there was no nuisance perpetrated. They asserted that the yards were kept in a highly sani- tary condition. Dr. Harris, Sanitary Superin- tendent, was called by the Board. He stated that he had carefu'ly inspecied the yards, and he could not speak of special defects in the drainage nor com- jain of the sanitary condition of the pens. When erds of swine are allowed to remain for any length of time unpleasant odors were produced; but he had no ground of compaint on either point. The offence was less against health than the senses of the community. Yet hog yardimg was not detri- mental to health uaniess brought directiy into a thickly populated locality, The great objection to the existence in the built up portion of the city of ds was that they attracted about them other * offences in the way of slaughter houses and fat boll- establishnients, Tne defence put in as evidence ‘the following record of the buginess of the yards for the past four years:—Number of hogs received at yard lor the year ending March 31, 1866, 633, arrivals for the year, 1,736; for ison Arrivals, 1,008; for 1868, 29,114: daily 2: for 1360, 451,961; average’ dally ar- showing @ gradual decrease in the re- jock. The investigation was adjourned until next Tuesday. MARRIAGES AND DEATHS. Married. Baccne—Rarriy.—On Thursday, April 1, by the Rev. W. Hitchcock, at the bride's residence, Dr. Francis A.
