THE ART OF PRINTING, The Invention of Printing—Its Influence as a Motor of Civilization—Its Progress and Present Perfection. W. Cooke Taylor, in his “Natural History of So- Ciety,” refers to the unparalleled impulse given to the progress of civilization about the close of the Bfteenth century “by she simultaneous invention, or at least introduction from the East, of the mart- ner’s compass, gunpowder and artillery, an im- proved system of arithmetic, and” especially of the art of printing, which, says Dr, Taylor, “has given combination and energy to the public opinion of Bations and bestowed on the entire community @ powcr of sharing in the deliberations of ‘the State, Whe invention developed no new element of clviliza- tion, but it gave intensity and extent to all. In nothing has the influence of printing, and more par- ticularly that of journals, ben more remarkably displayed than ia the extension and enforcement of individual rights.” The art of printiog, con- tributing as no other means could to the diffusion of knowledge and to a higher de- gree of intelligence among the people, is, there- fore, rightly locked upon as one of the principal motors of civilization, The printed works and journals invited thought, research and discussion, and “discussion renders men acute, lnquisitive, dex- terous, prompt in attack, ready in defence, full of resources” Aid no agency has assisted more in Uberating the peopie from the thraldom of political despotism than the press; for, quoting the language of Edinund Burke in the House of Commons, they— the journais and other periodicals—*‘augur misgov- ernment ata distance aud snuit the approach of tyranny in every tainted breeze.” ASIATIC ORIGIN OF TH MANUFACTURE OF PAPER. As “tall oaks from little acorns gcow,'’ so did this mighty engine of progress originate in little begin- nings. Ina tate lecture delivered in this city by the Rey. Dr. Martin, a professor of the Imperial College, at Pekin, in Clina, the reverend lecturer claimed the honor of having 1vented the art of printing and also the art of manufaciuring paper for Lhe Chinese. To some extent this claim is undoubt- edly well founded, The pple of Enast- ern Asia kuew the secret of manufacturing / cotton paper probably centuries before the Christan era, Even tle Saracens and Arabs knew nothing of it until they conquered Samareand, in the year 704 of the Christian era, when the Arabs learned fiom the ceuquered people—whither the knowledge had been broug.t from Chiha—the art of making paper, and soon alter established a paper factory 2t Mecca, During the Crusades and after, icularly im the thirteenth aud fourteenth cen- uries, large quantities of iis Arabian paper were broug.:t t» Europe to be used for copying books and for public records, instead ef parcimeat, which had become scarce and very high priced. Cotton was then unknowa in £uro, but among the Germans hemp culture was very exteusively followed, and most of the jinen then made was manufactured in Germany. ‘The apparent siinilarity of the linen fabrics to (hose made of cotton coor gaye rise to the belief tha! paper might also be made out of linen, and thus the prst paper factomes were erected in Gormany, probably not more than half a century before Jonani of Gutteaverg, started e. THE CH! x In regard to the art of printing the Chinese may also claim priority, though some insist that Cicero, in his essay “De Natura Deoru,’ suggested it by giving directions how to make forme iterarum— forms of letters on type from metal. But the Chinese rinted vooks long before this, and, as Rey. Dr. jurtin asserted in his 'ecture, hat many libraries coutalaing a hundred thousand and more printed volumes centuries before Christ. Their method of printing was by engraving the whole page upon one Diock of solid hard wood, inking the raised surface ard pressing the paper against ft with soft brushes. Though they bave now thtroduced hand presses, they BU welain the solid block, and conid noi yet be ia- duced to abandon it for movable types. HOW ITS KNOWLEDGE CAME TO EUROPE. The accounts brought by Marco Polo of the skill and advancement in manofactures among the Eastera nations, particularly of tne people of Cathay, by which name China was then Known, followed by the explorations of subsequent travellers, by land and by sea, revealed to the Europeans this primitive art of printing in use among the Chinese, and at the beginning of the fifieenth century we find it adopted in the West, First it was applied only to the manu- facture of playing cards and for furnishing tlustra- tiora to inanuscript works, aud gave tuus rise to the GUTTENBERG, art of engraving. FAUST AND SCHOEVFER. THE INVENTIONS OF This use of the Chinese art was continued for haif acentiury, aud though here and taere some artist used separate biocks to produce one impression it was not until Johannes Genstietsen, known In his- tory as Johannes Guttenberg, siruck the true idea by Inaking each letter of the alphabet @ “block” by self, and with them composing words and sec- tences with the same ease as one could write, His first expertmeats were made al Strasburg, in Alsatia, ¢hen a province of the German empire, and he coa- tinued there for twenty jears, but with 11 success, He is Known to have had a press of nearly the same construction as the so-called Frankiin press on ex} hibition in the Smithsonian institute at Washington, end at winch Franklin worked as a printer's appren- tuce. Guttenperg, after spending tis fortnne, re- moved to Mayeace and became there associated with Jobn rust or Faust, ® wealthy and learned man of thatancent town, and both emptoyed as assis- tant Veier seloeticr, a copyist, and @ man of tusie and ingennity, subsequently the son- inlaw of Faust Here the invention was perfected, and instead of words for types cut by uttenberg cast metal was used at the suggestion of Scuoetfer, who also invented the puncer of hard Ticial to give sharper cdges to the typo and greater purity to te impressioas. The first issue from this ress was oo, a letter of indulgence of Pope las Ve Sounbelieving were the people at that tine of the poss bility of producing by printing, at cloap price, What had heretofore been the work of Years at lange expense, that when Faust offeret coptes of the Vulgate translation of the Bible for pate al Paris at a were fract on of tue price for which they couia en be got ue was arrested as a sorcerer, + TUR PROGRESS OF PRINTING TO THE PRESENT DAY. ‘Thus we lave briciiy traced the origin of the art of printing abd oi the int) uiecdd eC of poper.
