The transactions at the Gold Bank were nearly $10,010,000, which indicates tuat ‘the “bears” are still sclung the market, basing their Operations on tle coutinued shipments of govern- ment bonds. Loans were made at fiat for borrow- ing a* the begiuuiaz of business, but the interest then weut the otner way. and as high as seven per cent and 1-32 were paid just before Clearing House. “The latter was an eco tional rate, and was doubt- leas paid by an enti ic ‘short’? to help his side Of the contest, ‘Tle quarrei 1s “a very pretty one as at stands” and exniiiis powers of endurance com- mensurate with (he vast sums of money at stake. “The groas clearings were $119,224,000, the gold bal- ances $4,130,005, and the currency balances $4,872,435. The range of price was as follows:— ‘The steamer Donau took out $85,000 in specie for Bremen, Foreign exchange was dull and quite weak in con- sequence of ine free supply of bis drawn against cotton and the exported bonds, Rates closed:— Sterling, prime bankers’, sixty days, 10054 a 109%; sight, 10954 & 10974 (transfers at 109%); commercial, 108% a 109, Paris prime, sixty days, 5.1734 a 5.1654; Paris prime, three days, 5.124 a 6.114%; Hamburg. sixty days, 36.4 36:4; Amsterdam, sixty days, 407; a 41; Frankfort, sixt; days, 40a 4144; Prussian thalers, 71% a 72; Bremon, sixty days, 7876 a 79. To government houses ‘the rate was tlvo anu six per cont. Commercial paper is scarce, and zo0d names pass freely at seven to eight ani niae per cent, buyers manifesting “More disposition to purchase in consequence of the gravitation to lower figarea of the interest rate on €allioans. Reference is had to loans on prime col- laterals, advances oa stocks being almost without exception at sevea per cent. Erie 1s again the target of adverse legislation, A resolution was introdaced in the State Legislature to-day to require the president and treasurer within ten days to report ia writing, under oath, to the Speaker of the House the exact amount of stock of the company now ou'standing; also tne amount in @etall of the funded aud floating debt of the said company. The question arises can the Legislature compel the officers to give the required information, the general law on the subject having been already complied with? A select committee, :*‘with power to wend for persons and papers,” could doubtless do so. Anothor bill introduced in the Senate levies tolls on all railroads competing with the canals for freight. Agata, according to the Cleveland Leader, the great railroad war between the Brlo Pennsylvania Coniral roads seems =p ba ae feid of operations westward, aow ork, in the Onto jature to prevent I aie KauWay from cowpletiag Its cons, coun Tir the Cincinnati, Hamtiton aad Dayton felt, af ratified, would complete a broad gadge route, under one control, from New York to Cincinnati, ‘Accord- ing to the Leader, a bill has been introduced into the Ohlo Legislature which covers tais special purpose under an affectation of a general reform in railway proceedings, It provides that a sworn state- ment of the assets and liabilities of the Erie Railway shall be made, and that tne road shall be pronounced solvent by the Ohio Auditor of State before the lease of the Hamilton and Dayton road can be made, ‘This movement is made in the interest neither of the stocknolders of the Hamilton and Dayton mor of the public, but simply with the purpose of shutting out the Erie road from competition with the Ponosy!vania Central at Cincinnati. The Leader thinks this bill ougat not to pass, but evi- dently believes it will, “Should it pass, it is evident the New York aud ris has been defeatea on its chosen ground, for it transferred the fleld of warfare against ali tlre other rail oad interests fa the country from New York to the West; and now to be shut out from Cincinnati as well as Chitago by our ‘old fogy’ gad men ts to acknowledge that the days of New Yérm 4nd Erio brag and bluster are past, ‘When its Jay Gould threw down thé glove to the Peunsylvania railroad king, J. New York Central sold up to 165 under purchases provabiy to cover short sales made upon the announcement of Judge ingrahaw's decision last ‘week. Pacific Mat rose to 115%. In the afternoon a reaction ensued aad the apprehension was almost painful for a time, Pittsburg as this pertod soid down to 90%. The activity m money came to help this depression, while the renewed assault upon Erie, as above enamerated, and the new bil in the Nilnois Logisiature, created less faith in the prices which have ruled in the market for the past month.
