U NEW YORK HERALD, To THe Epiror or THE HERALD:—° Commissioner Furey, of the Brooklyn Fire De- partment, recently expressed the opinion in a meet- fing of their Board of Estimate, with Mayor Kaib- Meisch in the chair and surrounded by the lictors and fasces of municipal authority, that the Fire De- partment of this city is an “extravagant and corrupt organization.” The people of Brooklyn have long since made up their minds that their own Fire De- partment is entirely inadequate to their protection, and have been and are now seeking for an organiza- tion modelled after that of New York, and now Com- missioner Furey is filled with apprehension of extra- ‘Vagance and corruption in case the control goes into other hands. Who is Commiasioner Furey, and ere nan one ne eee ne arose 3s he a capable, honest and efficient oMcer, co manding the confidence and respect of his iniow oa wie Re has he & ee oe See velo ce his opinion w as given so freely of our own Board, which is composed wh the leading events of ‘ar; and yet that grand bat Rid of lvency had nr weight with the party apy for its present possessor, when he maeved ee shirt area ehel eel brought up a string,” and was of a oralized presence, In the case of lOombatssioner 1 Furey, Me a3 we have said, his own ding will be the measure of value’ as to his fopinion. ‘There are a iarge class of men (in which, a we do not know him, we do not dnclnde the rooklyn Oommussiqner), to whom office is the ‘breath of the nostril, aud who, when in the ranks of the “outs,” bonestly consider the “ins” as cor- Tupt and extravagant, because they know te ‘would be go themstives if oppormatey offered, and who ee up a cry of corraption against every man ‘who holds oflice, from an honest conviction, on @ liniited personal experience, that some man when: holding Potlice is a tuief. These men despise every honorable ineans of ootaining @ livelihood, eens corner groccries and adorn street corn fulminate their opmmions and bad tobacco, an Manufacture in their » wn circle a sentiment which they sometimes succeed in working into a Sunday paper. ‘They are candidates for — office, from Collector of the Por: to uigat tabeate ccs conductor on horse railroads, flreuan or an, and im- press those who hold ovice with the valiie of their services aud the necessity of their reward; serve both parties in a primary iuecting ia controling the or- mization and either, at the polis which pays the st. ‘they are the vultures that hi hover over a politi- cal battle Heid. ‘they are the critics in the pit of the theatre of public liv, and sometimes succeed in 9) pearing belore tue foviights i some minor casi and, having no claracter to lose, brazen out their brief hour of corrupt administration without fear of the consequences, sv that their engagement p: Ry oot When a bine, foie citizen assumes @ position tl class of politicians ia the pit denounce him as cor- rupt, with afull Knowledge’ that there is a thief in their immediate vietuity, To the charges of such “lewd fetlows’' no public oficer is called upon to pay attention, and their clair 1s understood by respeci- ony citizens, The opision of Commissioner Furey, ig himself an oiical, aad being given at @ meel- of the Biovklyn ueard hatinate, the Fire Commissioners have so far n@iced as to call upoo him for the grounds ou which it is based. As they had the opportunity of an investiga- tion by a commitice of the Legisiature last winter of these louse charges and met them #0 triumphantly that the committee, composed mainly of their poi.uical opponents, of which Mr, Chris. Jonson, of tis city, was the leader, failed even to report (and tue testimony would never have been givep to the puvic had not the Commissiokers printed iPand circuiaied it with their report), they may be assumed to stud free from suspicion of ve- nality until Comuissiouer Furey produces new evi- Gence that they are uot an exception to the rule, and hold public otiice tu a city where corruption is rife with clean lauds aud unsuilied character as citizens. Now that ail men admit that the Fire De- eut of New :ork is one of its greatest objects of satisfaction, and tlu-e m charge of 11 have shown capacity, tateiligence aud firmness, the last resort of 2s enemies is tv Charge ayainsi it the same Covrup- tion which would @aist if Wey had its control. As, for example, tue siaiciuent Of a Sunday paper that ‘there were 200 deadheads on the pay roll of the de- partment (when on luquiry we have the positive assurance that no nan las received for a single hhour’s time not givea to the departinept), means ‘that ifthe man who inspired that articie had the con- $rol he wouid have zu dcadheads on the pay roll of ‘the. department. It wus simply the ditference be- ‘tween swallowing a biack crow or sometiung as Diack as a crow, aud yet some credulous reader ‘might have believed it true becuuse Le saw it in the paper. ‘The Late Fire in Carmansville=Card from the Fire Commissioners. fo rom Epiror or THE HekaLy:— Inthe HERALD of Sunday last @ communication ‘was published in which that portion of the Fire De- partment doing duty in Carmansville is charged with gross mefiiciency, the charge being founded on the result of a fire which occurred at 152d street and Broadway on the 25th ultimo. As the communica- tion in question reilects severely and unjustly on the members of the departuient stationed at Carmans- villg a brief and truthiui statement of the circum- at connected With the Gre alluded to may put an entirely diverent phase on the matter. ‘The house in wich tue tire occurred 1g a one story and attic building, waich was erected fn 1769, and the woodwork was consequently good food for fire, ‘When the alarm was given on tne 25th Engine, Com Sona pany No. 38 Was promptiy at work; but point at which water couid be obtained was toon ‘the aqueduct at 150th street, fully 700 feet/ from the fire, the engine did not go’ d.rect to the burning house, but was siationed near tue tap in the aque- duct. Through the aqueduct at that place the water rushes at the rate of avout four or five miles an hour, so that it was found necessary to anchor the suction pipe so that it might be kept steady in ~~ water. Ail this was done and fourteen hose stretched to tue scene of the fire, and yet, not ‘withstanding these drawbacks, the fire was extin- guished wiih the destruction of only the roof and attic and @ pecuniary loss to the owner and occu- a for damage to house, furniture, clothing, &c., By publishing the above you will do an act of jus- tice and oblige Commissioners of the Metropolitan: Fire Department, HOMRCIDE IN HARTFORD, CONN, {From the Hartford Courant, Feb. 1.) Green, Who was suifering considerably from rheu- matism, was disturbed by the snoring of Wadsworth, ‘whom le struck with @ cane over the shoulder to arouse him. ‘The iatter jumped up from his seat and at are you striking me for?’ Green replied to “Stop your d—d snoring,” and, a few angry words following, seized a chair and knocked Wadsworth to the floor in an Insensible condition. William Gaines, who was present, says Green almost immediately after went to sleep again, and that he himeell devoted nis attention to the injured man, not only during the remainder of the ht, but until Friday morning, when he was removed to the hospital. Wadsworth complained all the while bf dizziness, but made no reference whatever to the assault, except after lis arrival at the hospital, when Burgeon Ayres asked him if he had been drinking, Bupposing at first that it was a case of delirium re- puting og) drink. He replied that he had been, Bod being asked further if somebody ol irock him sald “Yes,” but gave no particu- and soon aiter became stupid, and subse- guestly went into spasins, which resulted in his jeath at 4wo o'clock yesterday (Sunday) hoe ms Coroner Holmes summoned & Jury of inquest, Only the testimony of tue surgeon waS taken, and the further examination of witnesses was Rays poe M4 the Police Court room at two P.M. oe (LT mortem to be held ia the meantime. The cekeed had a wound about half an inch long over the left eye, Which had produced quite a fracture. Wads- worth, the victiin of this & ly, was for some a barkeeper at the Clinton House, but has latterly nemployed by Green, Some years ago he was sent to State Prison for an assault upon a girl in ‘Wells strect, though since his release he has behaved ‘well.
