12 — CONFESSION OF A MURDERER. weeny Interview With Stephen Abbett in Jail—Cire cumstantial Account of the West Haven Homicide. {From the New Haven Register, Jan. ta) ——— of our reporters this morning (7th) vis! hen Abbott, convicted of the murder of Appol- foe Bronson, He found Abbott quite collected free to converse on the sul abe He ts nota handsome man, but scems to be tolerably intelli- “nt, aud told his story with an air of sincerity that clined the hearer to credit It, His narrative of the circumstances which led to the homicide and the way it took piace 1s given below, and will be found interesting: I was po at Woodstock, in Muddy Brook parish, and if f liv Sal atvurday I shall be aty-two years old. I ha uainted with Bronson some twelve years, and we have always been the best of friends. I worked for him a@ year ago this winter, cutting wood, aud he used to go off to New Haven gud leave me to take care of his meiner, sometimes for three months ata ime, Last spring, “april or May, Zo wanted me to go to West Haven to dg a ceilar, ana I oe and boarded at Preston Hinman’s. After bi the barn we went down to build the house. en I went home and got in the nA Bronson did not come up tli ‘about the middle of July. During this visit, I think it was, we went to Waterville und got on considerable of a spi and Bronson told me about his trouble with, ine Welton family. he trouble was about @ girl, Gaughter of Abljan Welton, he said he intended to marry. Bronson got jealous of the girl and used Violence. Abijah We.ton had Bronson taken up, Ber it cost hun some $400 or $400 to settle the affair. re eve there was some charge of slander. Merritt ronson, & lawyer in New Britain, was employed “a ‘Welton to carry on the suit against his brother Apo! os. At Waterville, after drinking pretty freciy, pegs toid me how they had used him, and he was to have revenge and he wanted me t~*~* lap. ARO ~ sy wep OI oa, ae a wu uwhed LWo sawintlis, One a une and @ quarier trom Waterville, worked Henry Weitoy, and the other on Mount by Tovy, three miles’ off. Bronson wanted me PY Mako a jug of liquor, which he would rug, and leave it near the first mill, so that cane Welton would get it, and go @ith him and set fire to Abijah Welton’s mil. He gave me @ gun to bind the bargain and was to give me fifty dollars fn money when the job was finisned. This was last August. I then went to work for his uncle, haying, ‘and didn’t come to West Haven till the 22d of Sep- ber. Bronson was not in condition to work, and Igot ia the crops, On the 2uih of September we came into town to get oil, turpentine, <c. It was Bo late we couldn’t get it, ‘and went round the cor- ner in Chapel street and ‘got drinks. Bronson took Deer and 1 whisaey. We went out on the sidewalk and | asked him what he was going to do for painting Forged He said he had spoxen to some men to do oe pe and they would ong the materials, d some more drinks aud | asked him if he Saan't better go home. fle said he didn’t feel well nd belleved he wouldn't go home. I took the cans ‘and carried them home, as he told me. On the way etopped at the West Haven Green to see the Boys in Blue, Didn't believe tn their doctrines and didn’t tay long, and went to the barn to bed. Had been asicep don’t know how long when some one Paitin on the door. Opened it and found Bronson. Sat him, “1 thought you were not coming over.”? Teaw he had been drinking pretty freely. lie began about his Welton troubi 8, and said, “When I go up this time ’'m going to have satisfaction before 1 move @own.” He had a jug in which be was going to get liquor for me to carry to Welton. 1 told him! suoulan't have any hand in it. He said I must—that I took the gun io bind the bargain. 1 told him I would pay for the gun, but wouldn’t have no act nor part in anything further. He insisted upon it, and [ toid him I'd expose the whole plot when I went up. He sald, “Damn oe, you will, will you?’ and caught up tue axe, lying near the door, and came at me with it. |. There was a plank set up for planing slats, andi Godged around that, and he struck at me with the axe. When it came down, es od it by the handie and never let go of it again. We had quite a strug- 1e for the mastersnip of the axe, and I got it from fin. He then caught up a strip of board and struck me With it on the left arm, mjuring it severely. 1 Btruck him with the axe fat ways—that ia, 1 meant to doso. He fell on lus knees, and grabbed me by bra ree and tipped me over back. We had a good a tussle before we separated, but I still lung to the axe. As soon as I was liberated gotup and hit himagain. He dove for my feet but I Kept out of reach this time, and strack him again, and he lay senseless. The Tas: blow was on the back. or side of the head. When be lay there and didn’t show fight, I weat ard took hoid of him, to hel ep him up, and found he was dead. | had no idea of killing him, any more than I have of killing either of you gentlemen at this moment. There was no kuife on Bronson any time, and all the cuts on him were made by the axe, after ali was over J went to the door, and a nt of going to Mr. Hinman, and tell him what jone. But it was getting light, and my courage faljea me, or the devil pat It into A head not to go. The theught struck me that perhaps Cook and his men wou.d be there before I could reach Hinman’s, apd | concluded to hide Bronson under the floor, the planks bemg loose. Rolled up the bed and put it in a corner, and picked up the lose boards and things scattered about. Burned the bloody shavings in the stove. Ailer putting the barn to rights, went down to Mr. Hin- man’s and Roger Alling’s, Abbott here reiated the conversations he had with various parues, abvut where Bronson was, and denied most positively that they were tugether on the West Haven Green, as tes tited. He also exp amed that it was his leit thumb which was cut, and not the right, as claimed by some of the witnesses, but how it was actually done he could not tell. it was sometime in tne fight. It pained him, and he came into town, and got a drug clerk to pour some Iaadanum upon it. Went back to the barn and had some talk with Cook about Bronson. Cook and hus man worked there all @ay, while the body was under the floor. He continued :—I remainea around the neighborhood Wednesday alternoon, and went to the barn at nignt, About three o'clock 1'took ¥ the floor, and took the money from the body. There was one ten, a five.and atwo dollar bill and some currency, not over twenty-five dollars in all. Carried the body to- ward the point where they bed oysters, Latd tt down and stripped myself and waded out with the body to where the water was three or four feet deep and gave tum a shove from me towards the light house and stood and saw him float off four or five rods in a south and east direction, Then came back to the barn, emptied the feathers from the bed tick Jn the house and pat the tick and bed clothing on the same place where Fronson had burned the straw tick and burned them, putting on shavings, &c., to help it on. He then described how he tried to destroy the traces of blood in the barn. He was in- tending to go home that day, and thought he would try to get a few clamsto take along, and used Cook's Doat, Kelated the conversation with Mr. Cook and Mrs. Alling when they came for the boat, su»stan- ‘ally as testified. He then told how he took Kron fon’s wateb, which was hanging up in the barn, and = it to Mrs. Roger Alling. “Aner that came into city to go home, but misved the train. He slept ‘that night in Mr. Hinman’s hayloft, and came back to the city In the morning; swapped Bronson’s coat, and weat off on the five o'clock train. He worked at home until arrested, a week jater, by four Plymouth constabies. fhe foregoing is the substance of Abbot's statement. In some parts we have been obilved to omit immaterial matter, but most of it is in his own janguage. A CarHoric Prinst Kr curred on the Michigan Central a few nights since, near Michigan City, with a fatal resait, Father Kerri. @ Catholic priest of Lafayette, haa been to cago to attend the funeral of a prominent ecciest- astic, and was returning home on the evening in question.
