8 Dn eT pide, Darts Mopah te., % months ; 84 bbis. crop Ni 'S %6c., aod 4) do. dos Texas at O60. 8 5801, FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. peuereeuetnennrreres ToRspaY, Oct. 76 P.M. ‘This has been s day of continued excitement in ‘Wail street, and on the Stock Exchange there was & very feverish market, particularly for rallway shares, while the monetary stringency experienced was greater than yesterday, the supply of loanable fands being inadequate to the demand even at seven per eent in gold, and transactions were reported as high as seven per cent in currency, with a commission of & haif per cent for the remainder of the week added. It ts reported that two millions more in greenbacks were withdrawn from the banks this afternoon in addition to $200,000 which were sent South by a single institution, and this is bus the beginning of the drain towards that section to move the cotton crop, simultaneously with which the demand on the account of the pork crop will inereaso the already existing stringency of the Western money Markets and stimulate remittances of currency from this centre. At the Clearing Honse this evening the Bank of the Commonwealil was ereditor $1,496,000 and the Bank of the Republic $821,000, but the other differencesetween the banks were unimportant, The Bank of Commerce ia un- @erstood to have invested about # million and a half ef its three per vent certificates in currency at the Sub-Treasury, and jate in the afternoon this was interpreted on the street as favorable to an abate- ment of stringency; but 1t must be remembered that ‘those certificates are already counted asa portion _ef the legal tender reserve, and that their exchange for currency docs not strengthen the banks, while it reduves the currency Dalance in the Sub-Treasury, and if the latter rung Jow it will have to be increased by additional sales of gold. Bank officers say that the prevaising strin- gency is due less to artificial canses than is generally supposed, and that there would be an active demand for money at seven per cent even if no special etorts ‘were made to absorb eurrency, and as it is there is vothing to prevent further distress being occasioned by the operations of an un- scrupulous combination, There is no pros- pect of the banks encroaching upon their re- serves, as the directors and presidente, almost with- out exception, are opposed to it in the present un- setuied condition of affairs and with the certainty of @ Southern and Western drain in view. The difficulty of borrowing money is, however, only one of the disturbing influences at work. The other is the highly inflay condition of the conse- quent stock market and the demoralization which is rapidly epreading among the bull ranks. New York Ccntral declined to 122 early inthe afternoon, and the Milwaukee and St. Pau! stocks also declined heavily, while Pacific Mail ‘was pressed for sale at one time at 121 and Fort ‘Wayne at 1104, and a panic-like state of feeling pre- vailed. Erle, however, as usual of late, was the engrossing feature of the market and declined to 8834; but just before the close !t was bid up *o 40%, immediately after which it reacted to 403 and closed weak again. The statements officially made by the President of the company to the Stock Exchange committees yesterday are of very damaging oharacter, and it is feared that when they become Known to the English stockholders the result will be thal they will seil out under the impression that it would be useiess for them to attempt to compete with a printing press, It is evident from what Mr. Gould stated to the committee that five millions more of new stock will shortly ‘be issued, and that as much more as the com- pany sees fit miay be issued in exchange for con- vertibie bonds, to the emission of which ‘there is no limit, Thie is regarded as the most dan- gerous feature of the case, and the banks and money Renders generally refuse in conseqnence to accept ‘Wiis stock as a collateral for loans unless to a trifing extent when mixed with other stocks. The distrust @f the stock market generally, and Erie particularly, has seldom been greater than it is at present, even im time of violent panic, and it is toagreat extent Justified by tne highly imfated prices now current, which are so far in excess of real ‘values as to excite alarm even among the bull cliques, It is therefore reasonable to suppose that, however @asy money might be, prices would have to be ad- Justed on a lower acale In order to avold @ crash re- @ulting trom the market breaking under its own ‘weight. The only stocks that are not selling for ‘more than they are really worth are governments and wome of the State bonds, and with the election of Grant an improved impetus will doubtless be impart- d to these, however great the demoralization in the markei for speculative stocks may be. The gold market was steady all day, its fuctna- tions having been from 134% to 134, with the closing transactions prior to the adjournment of the Doard at three o’clock at 134%, following which the premium remained without variation. ‘The borrowing demand for coin was well supplied, and loans were made at 1-16, 1-32, 1-16 and 4-64 per eent per diem, and at 2a6 percent per annum for borrowing. The groas clearings amounted to $118,441,000, the gold balances to $2,126,238 and the currency balances to $3,925,176. The Sub-Treasury @isbursed $9,149 in coin in payment of interest, and Bold $300,000 in coin at 134 71-100, the bids in al) amounting to $900,000. At the commencement of business the stock mar- Ket was weak and unscttied and at the early session @f the open board Erie sold at 39%, New York Cen- tral 1244, and Fort Wayne 112%. At tue first regular board prices were without material cuange, and on ‘the call New York Central closed 234 lower than at the same time yesterday, Michigan Southern \, Cleveland and Pittaburg %, Rock Island %, Fort Wayne 14, Ohio and Missiasipp! %, Pacific Mall 2%, Quicksilver 13¢, Canton , Western Union Telegraph % and Missourt State sixes \, while Erle was 4< higher, Reading 34, Cleveland and Toledo %, North- ‘western 4, preferred 3, Tennessee sixes, ex-coupon, 1, and new issue &. Government recurities were \ &@ % per cent lower aud dull, At the open board at ene o’civck the market was weak aud excited, and Kew York Central declined to 122, Erie to 28%, Fort Wayne to 110%, Pacific Mail to 12194, Milwauxee and St. Paul to 92 and the preferred stock to 93, At the @econd reguiar board the panic-like feeling pre- viously prevailing partially subsided, and on the call Erie closed % lower than at the first regular board, Reading %, Michigan Southern ‘4, Cleveland and Toledo 3g, Northwestern 4, Milwaukee and St. Paul Preferred 175, Quicksiiver %, Canton 3g and Tennessee sixes, now tasue, 4%; while Rock Isiand, was \ higher, Fort Wayne 7%, Western Union Telegraph % and North Carolina sixes, neW, \. Government securities were steady. At the open ‘Doard at half-past three Erie sold at 80%, New York Ceutral, 125% & 124); Fort Wayne, 112); North- Western, 89%, and Reading, 96%. Just before the @lose Erie was bid up 40\, and the rost of the market sympathized with the improvement, although there were no transactions Of tmportance, nearly all the brokers asving left the street. Erie soon re- lapsed to 40%, however, and at the close ai a quarter to fix the market was weak again at the following quotations, the tendency being still downward:— Pacific Mail, 1224 a 12%; Western Union, 35% New York Central, 1244 @ 124%; Erle, 40 a 40%; Reading, 96% @ 07; Michigan Bouthern, 85) @ six; Pittsburg, 88 @ 884; Kock Island, 105 a 105%; Northwestern, 8944 @ 894%—do, Prelerred, 90'4 @ %)s; Fort Wayne, 112% @ 113; Obio and Mississippl, 90); @ 20%; Mariposa preferred, 19 219%. The market for government securities closed firm at five o'clock at the subjoined quotations: Regis. ‘Vered, 1881, 114 w 114g; coupon, i861, lug a 115; 20's, registered, 106 @ 106%; 620°s, coupon, 1462, 112% 9 113); do., 1864, 11054 & 11074; dw., 1865, 11034 @111; do,, Dew 1965, 100% a 100%; ‘do. » 1867, 110 @ ‘TlOig; do,, 1868, 110% @ 110}; 10-40's, registered, 108% @ 104; 10-40%, coupon, 10540 105X.
