You ought to have been at this school to-day to have deepened your enthu- siasm in the cause of education and of truth. Some three hundred scholars, neatly dressed, with eyes sparkling with intelligence, looked up to me; and I assure you I hardly thought of the color so wickedly tabooed while listening to their prompt responses to thelr superintendent, and while drinking in the sweet melody of their Sabbath schoo! songs. Their school building is the picture of neatness. The chil- dren, great and small, were quiet and attentive, even to.our inne speeches, ‘There is a completeness: of order and training here that has not destroyed but only deepened the peculiar enthusiasm of this people. This schoolis the offspring of the Congrega- tonal chureh, Lonel Sunday, in Raleigh, N. C., in the morning, I attended |. Brinton Smith’s services (Episcopal). The neatness of the school buliding Where they were held, the cleanly and respectabie appearance of his attentive colored coi tion, with ee hearty responses they gave him, leave the a impression on my mind that “they are rising le.” I asked the school this morning, ‘What shat I tell the colored children wherever I go?’ One little boy, about ten years old, rose and said, ‘Tell them we are rising.” in the afternoon tast Sund: I visited Mr. Tupper’s Baptist Sunday Lariat thousand children met us there in large school building and ee that this indefatigable worker, Mr. Tupy ig now pus! The Soutnern schools and academies will soon send up their stu- dents to the foward University. A gentleman from Memphis asked me if I woul ‘exclude whites from the Howard University. I answered, ‘Why, my dear sir, am a white man myself and would exclude no man on account of color.” A university that shall be one indeed is the favor- ite idea with me. The common schools that we sball soon have all through the South will be nour- ished by normal schoois that are already established; bee pe te, law} bv fod and students, looking to the roadest fields of research, need @ university. Our paidlngs are nearly complete, and I think we shall be able to get some voluntary lectures this fall and winter, inviting in such lawyers, doctors and minis- ters as we have in Washington. Thus we hope to do good, explain by practical demonsiration this scope of our work and beget an increased inter- est in tue institution. We have received some dona tions toward lemesce eg for students who have not the means to support themseives while they are at college. Gerrit Smith and Frederick Doug- lass have sent us donations. Several other friends of education have done the same, Yet we need still endowments of professorships. This university, situated at Washington, is wes located for students from the South; the change of climate will not be abrupt to them; the large colored population affords the colored reasonable he ties for genial association and for board. ‘ing- ton was not laid out for extensive business opera- tions; yet no more favorable locations can be found than those for the Columbia College and the Howard University.
