| INTERESTING RELIC OF OLDEN TINE. Original Letter from George Washington. ‘From the Frankfort (Ky.) Yeoman, August 22. the original of the following letter from. George ‘Washington to General James Mercer is in the pos- soem of Cctonel \Gbomes crepes of Lpeoptivi a ently copi us for publica- fon With. his permission. “Tt 1s written in. Cie clear, flowing hand of the Gistinguished writer, and is marked with the peculiar neatness, ease of composition and care in punctuation which characterize of his writings. The portion relating to private business is val! trating the close attention given by him to all such matters, and the excellent judgment with which he conducted his private as well as public affairs. The latter part of the letter valuable historic interest, a8 relating to a subject in which the fate of the republic was so intimately concerned. The con- vention to remodel the federal system had been ap- Pointed, to meet in May, and yet, on the 16th of larch, it will be seen, Washington, though appointed ar Virginia at the head of her delegation, had declined all entreaties to attend. Within a fortnight after, however, in response to the nt voice of Virginia, through the Governor, and to letters from friends in various States, he consented to go, On the 28th of March he addressed a letter to the Governor of Vir- ginia (Randolph), in which, after stating the reasons which had influenced him to decline attending the convention, the influence of which he still felt, he added:—“However, as my friends, with a degree of solicitude which is unusual, seem to wish for my at- tendance on this occasion. I have come to a resolution to go if my health will permit; provided, from the lapse of time: between your Excellency’s letter and this reply, the executive may not have turned their thoughts to some other character.” Of his attend- ance upon th@ convention, his election as its pre- siding.oficer, and the happy results which followed, history pears full record. General James Mercer, to whom the letter is addressed, was the brother of General Hugh Mercer, who served with Washington in the Indian wars, terminating in 1763, and wno fellin the battle of Princeton, whule commanding one of Washington’s divisions:— LETTER FROM GEORGE WASHINGTON TO GENERAL JAMES MERCER. Mount VERNON, 15th March, 1787, Dzar SrR—Your favor of the 10th came duly to hand, and with very sincere concern I read the ac- count of your ill health; but if your other com- plaints have left you, the asthma, though trouble- some and distressing, is not a dangerous one; I will hope, therefore, that the agreeable season, which is tar aeronehingy will perfectly restore you to good Under cover with this you will receive the original deed for the lands on four mile ran, which va will lease to return when your pur are answered yy the reference to it for drawing the deed of con- erosion pe vour. speene in ound, bien and rawing’ it, T pi jou to acce] warmest acknowledgments. as tilial * The mode suggested by you to obtain the bond Which I to Messrs. McCoull & Blair, is, in my judgment, the only proper one; so far as it respects ou or the representatives of your father (if the credit to be applied to that acct.) it is precisely the same whether you acct. with me or Been fr the principal and interest of the sum which was to have been paid for the land under the circumstances of our claim—because if the right is deter- ined to be in you, 80 much will have been discounted from my demand on the estate—if in ‘them, it is only paying to them, as attorneys of Linds & Cozenova what otherwise would have been demanded of me_ The case with me would be widely different, for if I allow this sum with the in- terest in a final settlement and my bond remains un- neere Ia ce fa a sep mereon: and may a ressed by the actual payment atechsring Asean it in a discount, before I can -haveany redress, which would very illy accord with the present state of my finances. Should Mr. ‘McCoull refuse to accede to your proposal, it would rt i his intention of resorting to me for Towever desirous I am, and always shall be, to Comply with any commands of my country, I do not conceive that I can, with consistent conduct, attend the proposed convention to be holden in Phil- adel; in May next. For besides the declaration which I made in @ very solemn manner when I was about to retire, of bidding adieu to all public employ- ment, I had, just before the appointment of delegates to this convention, written and despatched circu- lar le:ters to the several State societies of the Cino‘nnati informmg them of my intention not to atteid thé general meeting which was to take place bait the same time and in the same city,—and as- pigrea reasons which apply as forcibly in the one as the other, Under these circumstances, to at- terd the convention might be comsidered disrespect- ful to a worthy set of men for whose attachment and stpport on so many occasions I shall ever feel the Dighest gratitude and affection. {t is unnecessary I hope to assure you of the pleas- ‘ue I shall always receive at seeing you here when- ever business or your health will permit. The latter, pewssibly, might be benefitted by the change of air. With sincere esteem and reg’d, I am, dear » yr |, Most ob’t serv't, GEV.
