Arriving at whe Capitol the cortige filed into the rotunda between lines of the Capitol police, who osed in after it, excluding the crowd until the coffin “bad been placed on the stand prepared for it under the centre of the dome, immediately in front of the plaster statue of Mr. Lincoln, and until the atten- dant colored soldiers had stacked arms and mounted each of these men bearing pretty long lists of in- Muential names of citizens of New York and Brook- lyn. The petitions have been presented at the White Honse and were referred by the President to the Attorney General for a report of their cases, and his advice in regard to the propriety of granting the pardons asked for. Up to the present time the Attorney General has not transmitted to the President his opinion on any of the cases, but it 18 understood that he will do so within the next day ortwo. The President has had interviews witha number of the relatives and friends of the prisoners, but has given them little encouragement to hope that their prayers will be favorably considered. He ‘The following is the report of the Sanitary Com- mutilated remains of aman were discovered lying mittee of the Board of Health on the Cattle disease:— METROPOLITAN BOARD OF HEALTH, } . New York, August 13, 1868. In view of the rapid apreed of the mi ant disease that has barst fot as an epidemic among herds of cattle in certain portions of Tlinots and Indiana, whence beef is supplied to the Metro- politan district of New York and the most populous portiona of the Eastern and Middle States, this Board of Health has endeavored promptly to do whatever lies in tts power to prevent the introduc- tion of such cattle and to exclude all such beef from the markets in this district. And however greatly it is regretted that farmers and the holders of the infected and sickly herds must suffer personal losses and inconvenience the act of bringing for- along the track of the Morris and Essex Railroad, near this place. Both legs were cut off, the head smashed in and one of the arms horribly cut up. He was named Patrick Conlon, about twenty-five years of age, unmarried and worked for a Mr, Morrell, of this place. He hasa brother on the New York police force. It seems that in addition to his vision being imperfect he had been drinking and was on his way home when struck by the locomotive of the half- past eleven P. M. coal train, Paterson.
