FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. ‘THURSDAY, August 13-6 P, M. ‘The gold market has been very strong and active to-day, and the fluctuations were from 147} to 147% with the closing transactions prior to the adjourn- meat of the Board at 1475. Subsequently the price ranged {rom 147% to 147%, and the closing quota- tion op the street was 147% a 147%. There was 3 more active borrowing demand for coin than yester- day, and loans were made without interest to either borrower or lender and at from one to three per cent for carrying. The gross clearings @mounted to $62,619,000, the goid balances to $1,284,46! and the currency balances to $2,180,931. The steamer Hermann, for Bremen, took out $11,437 tm specie, and the Havana steamer Eagle $258,000. ‘The Sub-1'reasury disbursed $42,000 in coin in pay- ment of interest on the public debt during the day. The foreign bankers and other strong parties con- tinge to be among the largest buyers of gold, but the demand is well distributed, and the indications are that the premium will gradually rise to about 150. There is a large speculative ‘short’? interest oustanding, and this contributes to temporarily Strepgtien the upward course of the premium. Al the suine time the reduced rates of foreign exchange operate against any large shipments of specie tor ihe time being, but there is no knowing how soon the surplus bills on the street may be absorbed and the rates advanced above the specie shipping point again. The price of gold at intervals during (he day is thus shown:. 10 A. The application for an injunction to restrain the company from paying the cash dividend which it recently deciared was denied by Judge Barnard on ‘Tuesday, 80 that no obstacie now exists to the due payment of the dividend in question. The Mr. Samuel Strong wio suddenly left Wall street last week after overdrawing his bank account to the extent of about $66,000 was yesterday expelled from the open Board of Brokers, of which he bad been aimember. The crop prospects continue highly encouraging, and the yleld of grain this year will, it is expected, be greater than for six years past. ‘The market for government securities has been very quic! all day, the transactions being more than usually ttmited, both at the board and tne counters of the principal dealers, There is no inquiry at present for the exportable bonds, and all the issyes seein to sympathize with the stagnation in these. ii will be observed that the five-twenties of 1868 avc quoted a fraction higher than those of 1867, and (lus preference is atirijutabie to the fact that they lave one year longer te run than the lat ter. At the close prices were generaily a fraction lower than at tre opening, but it will be surprising if be- fore long sere ts not @ more active home investment demand for our national securities attended by a “tong’ congiderulc advance in prices, The quota. tions #! four o'clock were a4 subjoined, the. market being firm at the Sgures:— Registered, 1881, 11544 @ 115s: coupon, 1881, 1155% & 115%; 5-20’, registered. 1562, 10045 @ 10994; 5-20's, coupon, 1962, 114% a 114%; do., 1864, 11036 @ 110%; do.,1865, 112% @ 11234; do., 1865, January and July, 109% 109%; do., 1967, 109 @ 1095; do., 1868, 10035 & 109%; 10-40’, registered, 1074 a 10534; 10-40's, coupon, 10914 a 100%; September compounds, 1865, 118},; October do., 118. i At the commencement of business the ratiway ghare market was dull and heavy aud at the early seasion of the open boarfl Erte sold at 57%; New Y Central, 12834, end Rock Island, 1125,. The forelicn exchange market is quiet and weak in tone, a'though the soppiy of bills drawn against five-twe is considerably smalier than it was two or (iver ays ago, many of them having been bought up at the low rates at which they were vifered early im the week. The condition of our foreign trade is such that but for the large shipments of tive-twenties which have been made the rates of exchange would rule steadily above the Specie shipping point and we should be under the necessity of exporting large amounts of gold to balance xchanges. As itis the bonds serve as a temporary substitute for coin, but there is an ele- ment of <ianger in sending our securities abroad on 80 great a scaie as we have been doing, as we are constant y exposed to the danger of having them returne | to us, and this possibility is not without» Permanent induence upon the gol! premium.
