ACCIDENT.—Yesterday afternoon Bridget Mec- Gowan, ‘of No. 90 Baxter street, was run over by the twelve o'clock train from New Haven at the corner of Sixty-ffth street and Fourth avenue. Bridget bad her leg broken and was taken to St. Luke's Hospital. FounD IN THE WATER.—Coroner Schirmer held an inquest at Betlevae Hospital on the body of William Duggan, a man thirty-three years of age, which was found floating in the water at the foot of Eighty- Sixth street, Hast river. Previously the remains had becn picked up at Hell Gate by two men who towed it ashore. THE Mayor's OFFICE.—The rooms and chamber of the Clerk to the Common Council and the Board of Aldermen have ail been repaired, repainted and re- furnished, and now the public room at th ons oflee ts about to undergo a long and muce needed reformation and renovation in the way of furuivure and paint. Boy DROWNED.—An inquest was yesterday held by Coroner Rollins on the body of Robert W. Miller, a lad eight years of age, who on Wednesday morn- tug last was drowned in the dock foot of Warren street. SHOOTING AFFRAY.—At eight o'clock lastnight Frank and Nicholas Fischer (brothers) quar- relled in a lager beer saloon at 174 Christopher street, when Frank drew a revoiver and fired one shot at Nicholas. The ball glanced off on the side of his head and inflicted no injury. The assaulting party was arrested and locked up in the Ninth pre- cinct station house. SUNSTROKES.—An unknown man fell from the ef- fects of the heat yesterday on the corner of Broome street and Broadway. He was taken to Believue Hospital. A letter carrier, named W, Howard, was taken suddenly tll yesterday and conveyed to his bome, at 37 Market street. At flve o'clock P. M. yesterday an unknown man was found al the corner of Seventh avenue and Seventeenth street sufferi from sunstroke. He was taken to Bellevue Hospital. ALLEGED RospeRy OF a BANK Boow.—Yesterday afernoon Mrs. Elmira Arrington was arrested on the complaint of Mrs. Anna Crook, of No. 4 Bleecker street, who charges that the prisoner stole a bank book of the Broadway Savings Bank, and obtained from that institution the sum of $597, the properiy of the complainant. The arrest was made by oiicer Crook, of the Twenty-fifth precinct, the hashand of the complainant. Ste will be urrdigned to-day be- fore the Justice at the Tombs. ACCIDENTALLY Swot.—At three P.M. yesterday a man named David McDonald, residing at No. 53 Oak street, was shot in the breast and dangerously wounded by the accidental dischurge of a pistol in the hands of Charles Tote, employed on board the pocennyesy City of Paris. The wounded man was taken to the City Hospital and Toffe and the quar- termaster of the vessel were locked up by officer Standish, of the Twenty-sixth precinct station, at the Second precinct station house. CASUALTIES YESTERDAY.—Joseph Burnes fell from a building in Forty-sixth street, between Third and Lexington avenues. He was taken to St. Luke's Hospital. Philip Clark, residing on Eleventh street, between First and Second avenues, fell from a build- ing at the corner of Fifty eighth street and Second avenue and fractured his leg. He was taken to St. Luke’s Hospital. About half-past one o'clock A. M. Mrs. Elizabeth Garrison, of i08 Perry street, while asleep near a window of her residence, on the second story, fell to the pavement, but escaped serious in- jusy. ENJOYMENT AND CHARITY.—About three years ago asociety was formed among German ladies of the Israelitish race, called the Independent Order of ‘True Sisters, taking for its pattern in some measure the Order of B'nai B'rith. Harris, of 109 West Thir- teenth street, made complaint at Jefferson Market Police Court, charging Frederick Wood, @ boarder at the same number, with the larceny of a diamond ring valued at $1,000. Her complaint represents that Wood borrowed the ring on the representation that he wished to have one made like it.. He failed, itis said, to return the ring, and she caused his arrest by officer Petitt, of the Broadway squad, yes- terday. Wood was arraigned at Jetferson Market yesterday and held in $500 to answer, ATTEMPT TO KIDNAP A CHILD.—Mary McCormick, residing in the Fourth ward, yesterday afternoon ap- proached the residence of J, Edler, No, 335 East Twenty-fifth street, and seeing a little girl attempted to kidnap her, claiming the child as hers. The mother of the child at once sent for her husband, who is a fireman. On his arrival he caused the ar- rest of the woman by officer Churchill, of the Eighteenth precinct, ‘fhe woman was yesterday afiernoon arraigned before the Jefferson Market Court and committed for trial upon the charge. THE Case oO NAGLE.—Frederick Nagle, the young man lately employed as clerk in the jewelry estab- lishmen of M. J. Poillard & Co., No. 21 Maiden lane, Whose arrest by a detective officer on a charge of obtaining six silver watches from Gabriel Houseman, agent of the firm, under pretence of being still in their employ, was yesterday brought before Judge Mansileld at the Essex Market Police Court. He con- fessed having pawned the watches and sold the tickets, and through bis information the watches were recovered. He was fully committed to answer at the Court of General Sessions. A Taler CaPptuRED.—Omicer Nevins, of the ‘Nine- teenth precinct police, yesterday observed three well known young thieves acting suspiciously on Third avenue, near Fifty-seventh street. Finally one of them disappeared in the cigar store of Robert Colell, No, 889 Third avenue, and on his coming out he ar- rested him, the others iimmediately taking to their heels and escaping. On the prisoner he found $6 55, which the former had managed to steal from the money drawer and which Mr. Colell identified. The penonae was taken before Judge Kelly, of the Fourth istrict Police Court, and committed for trial. A Warca Si0LEN AND RECOVERED.—On Thursday afternoon Mr. Patrick Walsh, living at 104 Bayard street, was witnessing the military parade in Tomp- kin's square when he felt a tug at his vest pocket. ‘Turning instantly around he missed his watch, and at the same time seized James Kelly, who stood be- side him and was acting in a suspicious manner. The accused was given in charge of officer Buckley, of the Fourth precinct, and searched, but nothing could be found of the raissing timepiece. After the prisoner had been taken to the station house a anger waited upon Mr. Walsh and handed him his watch, which he said he had found where he (Walsh) had been standing. Justice Hogan committed the accused for trial in default of $500 bail. JUVENILE BURGLARS.—Zarly on Thursday evening two boys, fifteen years of age, named Alfred Williams and Valentine Shaefer, forced an entrance into the ofice of Alfred Peters, No. 4 Broad street, by means. of false keys, with mtent to steal $50 worth of books and other property then in the place. Before the delinquents could’ tescape with avy plunder oficer Hayes, of the Hirst precinct, discovered and arrested them. ‘The prisoners were arraigned before Justice Hogan yesterday and committed for trial. EXTeNstve THEFT OF LErrers.—OMcer Walling, detailed at the Pogt OMce, yesterday brought before Justice Hogan a young man named Charles McCul- longh, recently in the employ of a firm in Nassau street, on the charge of larceny. It is alleged that almost every morning for seven or eight months past the prisoner has received the mail matter of his employers from the — carrier, when he would pocket the letters, take them to some private place, break ‘them open and appropriate the valuable contents to his own use, Fora long time the Post OMce clerks were suspected of dishonesty in the matter, and it was not till a thorough examination was instituted that the real facts Were brought to light. Since he commenced these financial transactions it is believed that Charles has averaged about $5 per day and the sum total abstracted mast reach several hundred dollars, The accused pleaded guilty aud the magistrate committed him for trial. THE MULBERRY STAEET HOMICIDE. Coroner Rollins yesterday afternoon held an in- quest, at the Sixth precinct police station, over the remains of Ann Callaher, the woman who died the nighi previous from the effects of violence alleged to have been inflicted by Jeremiah Harrington, as here- tofore reported in the HEKALD., The testimony elicited showed that deceased was of very intempe- rate habits. On Thursday night Harrington, with whom «deceased lived as domestic, had some words with her, in consequence, as he alleged, of her drinking a quantity of gin from his bottle. Being enraged, he struck her on the arm and on the stomach, knocking her to the floor. She soon be- came insensible, and died shortly afterwards. John Beach, M. D., made @ post mortem examina- tion on the body, and on be sara the chest the internal organs were found to be much diseased from the excessive indulgence in the use of poisonous liquor. An examination of the head showed the fact that compression of the brain had produced death, there being an effusion of blood plainly visible. On the evidence presented the case was submitted to the jury, who rendered the following verdict:—“That Ann Ca laher, the deceased, came to her death from compression of the brain, the result of violence at tne hands of Jeremiah Harrington, on the 30th day of July, 1868." ‘The prisoner, who is @ laborer, forty-two years of age anda native of Ireland, was committed to the Tombs to await the action of the Grand Jury. De- ean thirty-seven years of age and a native of reland. DEPARTURE OF THE MONTGOMERY GUARD, A Challenge to Drill Outside of New York City. Yesterday the Montgomery Guard devoted the forenoon to a visit to the Park, where in the many attractions which every drive and pathway dis- closes they appeared to forget the defeat of the day before, if defeat itcan be called. About three o'clock they returned to the armory of the Sixty-ninth, on Grand and Basex streets, and after some little time spent in mutual leavetakings the Guard and their escort proceeded to the foot of Murray street, North river. A large crowd collected on the pier, and when Gilmore's baud struck up several popular airs the enthusiasm of those present became greatly ang- mented. Manahan's band accompanied the Sixty- uinth. At-five o'clock the Guard went aboard the Newport boat, together with an immense crowd of civic pas- sengers, and when the vessel hau off into the stream cheer after cheer went up from the passen- gers and the soldiers, which was duly responded to by the members of the Sixty-ninth various ersous Who assembled on tii 1 ard feel utensely sore over the treatment they r red in New York, but under the circumatances they deem it wisest to put the best possibie face on the matter. BROOKLYN, July 31, 1868, To THE EDITOR OF THE HERALD: Reading your correspondence on the above subject yesterday I could but think thay if we had a law to prevent the sale of liquors, wines and ales in so- called drug stores, properly enforced, it would be all- sufficient to prevent the employment of incompetent clerks. By making the drug store keeper depend on his legitimate business instead of using the sign to cover an illegitimate whiskey business the public would be less frequently startled by acts of careieas- ness und incompetency in so-called drug stores. STATEN ISLAND NEWS. SMALLPOX AT QUARANTINE.—The Ariel, of the New York and Bremen steamship line, arrived yesterday at Quarantine, with 864 passengers, from Bremen on the 11th ult. A few days ago the smallpox made its appearance ina mild form in the steerage. Those who are ill from the disease will be removed to the hospital, the slight cases vaccinated, and after the vessel has been fumigated she will be permitted to come up to the city and discharge. A® ALLEGED CLERICAL IMPOSTOR.—An Individual giving his name as Frank Whitcomb called upon the pastor of the St. Paul's Methodist Episcopal church, of this city, last week, and representing him- self as a maimed soldier who had been confined in Andersonville prison and a student at the Evansville Theological Seminary, with a license to preach, ob- tained permission to occupy that gentleman's pulpit. His apparent debility so interested the pastor that a subscription was set on foot for his benefit, pending his receipt of which, however, inquiries having been made concerning the truth of tis statement resulted in their being proven untrue, Lie left on Tuesday for Herkimer county, N. Y. Belleville. Boy DRowNED.—A lad, seven years of age anda son of John Morrissy, of this place, while carrying his father’s dinner to him at noon, on Thursday, stopped to ptay in a mud puddie which has been formed by the excavation for the Newark reservoir. While ing upon a plank he fell of and was in- stantiy drowned, Trenton. DEMOCRATIC MASS MEETING.—The democratic lead- ers here held a meeting on Thursday night. The meeting was held in the open air. A principal cause of the paucity of the attendance was the receipt of a telegram from ex-Governor Parker announcing his inability to attend. He subsequently arrived and delivered an enlivening address. He was followed by Captain Whelan, of Elizabeth. The meeting was also addressed by several other gentiemen. THE WEST HOBOKEN HOMICIDE. Death of Patrick Madden—Inquest by Coro- ner White. After nearly five days of suffering Patrick Madden, One of the three men who were stabbed on Sunday evening at West Hoboken, expired at St. Mary's Hospital, Hoboken, at half-past one o'clock yester- day afternoon. The particulars of this atroctous case and the testimony of several witnesses were published in the HeraLp on Monday. Madden was stabbed in the abdomen with a chisel and the bowels rotruded. Canavan, who was stabbed in the breast, is slowly recovering, although the weapon penetrated the pec- toral muscle midway between the breastbone and the surface to the depth of six inches. Had the weapon struck half an inch higher the femoral artery would have been severed and excessive hemorrhage resulted. Michael Roche, the alleged Roses Was arrested and lodged in the county ail. Coroner White empanelied a jury last evening, who viewed the body, after which the inquest was adjourned till Monday evening. THE TRIAL OF James C. Sawyer, at Warren, for the murder of William Holcomb, has resulted in & verdict of acquittai.
