8 FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL eee Mornay, June 1—6 P. a been strong but rather q eo the Ractantions were 110% 190% t0 13076 ‘only, with the Closing transactions at 130%, There ‘was & good borrowing demand for coin, and loans swere made without interest and at 1. 2 per cent for carrying. The gross clearings amounted to $26,825,- (000, the gold balances to $1,323,339 and the currency balances to $1,845,043. The imports of specie from foreign ports at this port last week amounted to 948,268, making a total of $3,262,373 since the 1st of Yanuary, The disbursements of coin at the Sub-Trea- gary to-day in payment of interest on the public Gebt amounted to $187,000. ‘The stock market was barely steady during the forenoon, owing to @ further decline in Erie, which touched 68% under large transactions, but during the whole of the afternoon the tendency of all the railway shares was upward, and there was a marked advance in New York Central and Northwestern pre- ferred, while Erie recovered to 6974, with a drift towards continued improvement, the decline from 73}; on Friday morning, without any apparent cause, having been too rapid not to be succeeded by asharp reaction in the present speculative temper of the street, The prospect is at present more favorable to ‘what is called a summer speculation than it has been at any time this year; but prices are so much above real values and the market is so entirely governed by the action of cliques that there is no induce- ment for the outside public to buy any speculative Stock on the list. At the same time, as we have be- fore had occasion to mention, it is as dangerous to sell “short’’ as to buy, and the greater the rubbish the greater the danger. 1t is a consciousness of this which has led to the active movement now going forward in government securities, which are still the cheapest stocks in Wall street. In the future it is more than probable that they will not only gradually rise to a higher point than we have yet seen them selling at, but that they will also be more actively dealt in, like the funds of the leading Powers of Europe. The excitement in the market for government se- curities is increasing and the transactions. to-day have been enormous, while prices closed from % to ‘144 per cent higher than they were at noon on Satur- day, the greatest advance having been in the five- twenties of 1865 and 1867, The investment demand continues unchecked and the foreign bankers are heavy buyers of the five-twenties of 1862 and 1865 And ten-forties, The effect of the latter loan being closed has not yet been fully felt; but the ten-forty bonds are relatively cheaper than any of the six per cents, while the fact that the principal as well as the interest is payable in coin under the authorizing act is calculated to create a special demand for them abroad, and already they are quoted at only two per cent below five-twenties ef 1562in London. It Will be remembered that last Saturday week, when the bonds of 18467 were selling at 11034, ten-forties were 105, so that the latter have dvanced only about one per cent, while the former have advanced three per cent. There is consequently more margin for arise in these than in any other stock on the list. The old five-twenties of 1865 are next in point of cheapness, as they carry the game amount of accrued interest as the bonds of 1862, which are still 13, a 14 per cent higher, al- though the former have three years longer to run. ‘The speculative transactious in these securities are daily growing in volume, and one great cause of the extreme buoyancy of the market is the fact that less than eighty millions of seven-thirty notes now re- main to be funded, and bonds sold at higher prices than those now current while all the seven- thirty notes were unfunded. At the present rate of conversion it will not take many days to ab- ord the whole of these notes, and then every gold bearing loan will be practically closed. The conversions at the Sub-Treasury to-day aggre- gated 004,009, and i exchange for the notes five- twenties of i867 or 1865 (new issue) will be issued without (ic July coupon. The conversions in ‘May were about sixty millions and the purchases twelve millions, All the indications continue to be favorable to higher prices than we have hitherto seen since the beginning of the paper money era. There isa good investment demand at par for the first mortgage bonds of the Union Pacific Railway Com- pauy, and also for those of the Central Pacific Com- pany, both of which bear six per cent in coin interest. United States stocks closed strong at the following Quotations:—Registered, 1891, 112 @ 11244; coupon, 1881, 116% a 117; 5-20's, registered, 1862, 108% a 109; 5-20’s, coupon, 1862, 1123; a 11244; do., 1864, 110% a 110%; do,, 1865, 1103 a 110%; do., 1865, January and July, 11334 0 113%; do., 1867, 113% a 113%; 10-40's, registered, 106 a 1063; 10-40'a, coupon, 10644 a 10644; June 7.30's, 109}, @ 1095; July 7.30's, 10935 a 1005); August compounds, 1865, 118%; September do., 117%; October do., 117K. ‘The ease in the money market is increasing and large amounts were loaned to-day, at three per cent on government securities, the leading dealers in the latter being fully supplied at this rate, while on mixed collaterals the supply of capital was abundant to houses in good credit at four per cent. The drain of corrency ts still towards this city, as the bank Statement for last week conclusively shows, The 1808, mercantile demand for money is very light, owing to the dulness of trade, and com- mercial paper of the best grade passes at 6 a6 per cent. There is no probability of any other than an abundant supply of loanable funds at this centre until the end of August, when the usual flow of currency westward to move the crops will set in. It is this extreme ease and the prospect of its continuance which is one of the prin- cipal causes stimulating the rise in United States stocks at present, for the banks, finding themselves unable to fully employ their fands in call loans, are large buyers, and the same 1s also the case with other corporations as well as privat@ individuals, A comparison of the statement of the associated banks of this city for the week ending on Saturday last with that for the corresponding week in each of the three previous years shows the following changes:— June Loans Specie Circuia’ Deposita..... A Chicago journal of Friday thus refers to local Monetary affairs: The obligations now being cleared off by merchants generally exceed the discounts being made, and the Supply of loanable funds at the disposal of the banks is Increasing. There does not seem to be adequate employment for the capital of banks at rates which have heretofore been considered moderate. The balances in New York of some of our city national banks are in excess of what they have ever been before, and yet exchange keeps up and even grows stiffer because the sellers of it do not want the cur- rency which they would get for it; besides they are getting a small interest on thelr balances there—say four er cent on the proportion of their reserves held there in accordance with the provisions of the ay and perhaps a lower rate on over and above SALES AT THE NEW YORK STOCK EXCIANS:. anced Monday, June 1—10:15 A.
