Bi _—<—— nr — FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. MONDAY, May 18—6 P, M. The market has been quiet to-day, and the nut were from 13914 to 13934, with the clos- “mg transactions at 1303; There was a moderate porrowing demand for comm aud loans wore made at 8% a5 percent for carrying. The gross clearings amounted to $4,275,000, the gold balances to $2,006,864 and the currency balances to $2,808,749, ‘The imports of specte at this port from foretgn ports last week were only $9,188, making a to- tal of $2,975,680 since the 1st of Jan- wary, The Assisiant Treasurer sold about $300,000 in coim and purchased a more than equal ‘amount of seven-thirty notes. The undertone of the wold market és very firm, and its unyielding tendency strengthened by the drain of specie to Europe; but ‘the ‘speculative transactfons are on a limited scale, and there is very little @isposition shown to base ‘operations, either for @ rise or a fall, on the present ‘or prospective political situation, either as regards impeachment or otherwise. The general opinion ts that the Senate will take no further action upon the impeachment articles; but not a few suppose that the waragainst the President will. be carried into the Chicago Convention, and that im- peachient will be made a part of the republican platform, The teeth of the monster have, however, been drawn, and apprehensions are no longer euter- tained with regard to the consequences of any acts which the radicals may commit. It is a mistake to suppose that Wall street would have been disturbed by the conviction of the President on Saturday any more than it was by his acquittal of the charges preferred in Article XL, for the same relief from the Previous suspense would have been elt in either event. It will be impossible to again arouse an equal @egree of public interest in the question of Impeach- ment, for the people are tired of it, and it threatens death to the party that has the temerity to extremities after the defeat of but however this may be trade and speculation will be carried on without in- terruption aud the public mind will be left undisturbed, The nexf engrossing question of the day will be that of the finances, or more particularly the currency, the tariff and the internal revenue, Already the attention of Congress is turning in this direction, as is shown by the new tax bill reported to the Mouse of Repfesentatives by the Committee of Ways and Means, as well as the speech of Mr. d Garfleld on lis premature scheme for . the gradual resumption of specie payments. The tarif and the -tax bill should be so amended as to produce the largest amount of revenue wiih the least suffering and inconve- nience to the people, and the expenditures should be carefully adjusted to the revenue and vice versa, 80 that the country may not be unnecessarily burdened ‘with taxation and that the public credit may be pro- tecte1 and improved. As both houses have ad- journed until the 26th inst., however, we have a Dlank week before us at Washington. The stock r t opened this morning with an ap- pearance of firr ness which proved deceptive; for ot only was the improvement of 42% percent upon the tate ves of Saturday soon lost, but at the close quotations were 44 a 24 lower than at the commencement of business, Atmong the miscellane- ous st acifle Mail fell about one per cen’ and it was said to be the intention of those manip Aating it to force a decline of three or four per cent: ®ut at about ninety the stock was freely bid fo ‘There was alerial change in the.quotations for 0 railway $s in thera were vei Rmited, the cliques bemg apparently inactive, not- withsta wz the increased a lance of mone; which caused loans to be made mainly at five per cent, although ute generally asked was six per cent. Owing to the absence of outside orders to boy stocks and the languor of speculation in the strect the demand for money from the Stock Ex- change, excepting the deaiers in govern- ment securities, is light, and the supply of Doanadie funds is considerably in excess of the de- mand. The monetary case is, however, in combina- tion with other causes, beginning to impart great activity and buoyancy to the market for United States stocks, and this feature of business in Wall street is likely to become more marked as the season ®dvances, and ultimately speculation in the funds will probably become as.active as it is on the Lon- don Stock Exchange or the Paris Bourse. The con- ‘Versions of seven-thirty notes at the Sub-Treasury @uring the day aggregated $1,370,000, making 0- 000 since the 1st inst. We have already published the statement of the as- Sociated binks of this city sor the week ending on Saturday last; and we now compare it with the returns for the corresponding week in each of the ast three years with the following results:— Mary 19, 18 May 16, 1868, Loans. +++ $257,961 Inc... $0,762,909 Specie. 15, 567,21 Inc 371,590 Circuiation.. 33,632,301 Deposits....... i Legai tenders. 60,825,001 May 19, 1866. The sharp rise of % per cent on five-twenties in London sipce Saturday undoublediy stimulated the improvement here, aud this was of course, due to the reassuring effect upon public op{nion in Europe of the vote of the Senate on impeachmeut, We can have no surer Wvarometcr than tits, and no more satisfactory evi- dence of the beneficial Influence upon the public eredit of the termination of the prolonged suspense with which the resuit of the trial bas been await Both the home aud the foreign investment demand ave been greatly quickened, and in view of the pre- vailiag monetary nd the fact that gov- @ruiments are sill the cheapest securities in the oountry, a steady advance in them on both sides Of the Atlantic is probable for some months to come, The purchases on domestic account were mainly of the five-twenties of witle the foreign demand Was confined to ten-fortios, sixes of 1881 and five- 14 ease twenties of 1862 and iss.
