Tue Investigation RELATIVE TO THE Vorgs or SexaTors.—The board of managers constituting a committee toin vestigate the facts Telative to the yotes of Senators upon the elev- enth article held quite & lengthy meeting yes- terday. The witnesses examined were Perry Fuller, Esq. Hon. D. W. Voorhees, Generat Thomas Ewing and W. S. Huntington, of the First National Bank. The three first named were interrogated with reference to conversa- tions with Senator Ross. General Ewing was asked if he did not visit the Senator at his Tooms op Friday evening last, and in reply stated that Senator Ross and himself had a briet conversation, in which some reference ‘was had to the impeachment articles, but no at- tempt was made by the witness to induce the Senator to vote one way or the other. The urport of the testimony of Messrs. Voorhees ead Fuller was that no attempts had been Ade to induce the Senator to yote for acquit- sal as far as they were advised. The testimony of Mr. Huntington was to establish the fact that a draft for $20,000 passed through the First National Bank of this city, endorsed by certain parties whose purpose in obtaintng the money is to be sought through evidence offered hereafter. “General Butler was engaged last evening at the First National Bank in examining the bank account of Mr. Fuller, together with Mr. Huntington, cashier of the bank. The Impeachment Managers at their session this morning examined Mr. J. C. Dunieary, 2 Cincinnati banker, who testified to having paid $25,000 to order of C. W. Woolley. Woolley was also examined. He admitted having re- ceived and disbursed that amount of money, but absolutely refused to divulge to whom it was paid or for what purpose, though be averred it was not used by him to affect impeach- ment. It was understood that Mr. Butler in- tended to introduce a resol: tion to compel him to answer the questions, but was cut off by the adjournment of the House at a little after 2 o'clock, & motion to adjourn until Friday hay- ing previously been lost by two votes, General Logan is at Chicago, and the exam- ination is pushed mainly, it is understood, by Mesers. Oliver bave brought suit for Jonn Naglee against Secretary Stanton, for trespass, g damages at $50,000, The plaintiff in his declaration sets forth that on the 12th of May, 1865, he wns the owner and in peaceful posses- sion of 8 farm called Neabsco, in Prince Wil- liam county, Va; that the defendant, acting under and by authority of the power vested in him, caused an officer of the cavalry of the United States to enter on bis farm and torn luun away, whereby he lost the use of said farm during the cropping season of 1865, and lost a large number of horses, cattle, sheep, hogs, &c. THE Missovurt DeLeGaTion AND SeNaTOR HENDERSON.—Senator Henderson was on the floor of the House a short time this morning conversing with a member of the Missouri delegation. It is understood that the commit- tee to investigate the correspondence with ref- erence to this Senator's vote on impeachment have found ne facts beyond what were already known, and that their report will not reflect injeriously upon the action of either party. Mr. Henderson was requested to appear before the committee at their meeting this morning. but for some reason or other failed to do so, and therefore the investigation was not concluded as intended. No Pay.—There are now employed in the Treasury Department about three hundred laborers and messengers, whe bay any pay since March last, on a contingent fund of the Depa which they are paid, being ext Allot these employees are in want of money, and it is to be hoped that Congress will, at an early day, make the ne '¥ Appropriation to pay them. They were all notified when the fund was exhausted, but consented to continue on with their work, hoping that the appropriation would soon be made, out of PERMISSION TO HE AnsENT.—The President yesterday received a communication from Noble D. Chief Justice Chase and the Presidency. {Dispatch to the New York Times.) Wasuixetox, May 17.—The stories about Chief Justice Chase and the Presidency are finally coming into some tangibie shape. He bas formally put bimseif into the hands of his friends, and said that, while he is not a candi- date, he cannot object to the use of bis name, and willrun ears mgere 7s the Conservatives. The movement in his behalf seems to originate in Philadelphia. He was waited upon last Thursday by two gentlemen representing the Citizens Conservative Association of that city, one of them being the assessor in Kelley's Con- gressional District, and the other the late Dem- cratic nominee against Kelley for Conpress. The report of the interview is furnished by the former, Both gentlemen were delegates in the Philadelpbia Convention of 1866, and both are now in full ee the Democratic party. They told the Chief Justice of the high Tespect they had for him, said people were all turning toward him to lead them out of a peri- leus condition into which they had been brought by the revolutionary conduct of the Republican party, and tickled his ear with some fine phrases about sweeping the country from ocean to ocean with his name, Mr. Chase responded that be was much grat- ified with their visit; that his position forbade bim from entering much into polities; phat he was, however, the seryantof the people, should they call him to preside for the next four years over the destinies of the country, he He further N°. 4,741. All of the leading hotels are occupied to their utmost capacity, with three and five ina room. A private parlor a: the Sherman House costs forty dollars a day. ‘There are over one hundred newspaper men here, representing journals from Portland, Maine. to California. The canvassing is wholly confined tothe Vice Presidency. The friends of Mr. Wade have abandoned the intention arged yesterday, of nominating him by acclamation. The yari- ous State delegations insist on throwing a com- plimentary yole for their candidates. Maine is for Hamlin; New Hampshire is inclined to Wilson; Vermont is for Poland: Massa@usetts isfor Wilson; Cannecticut, for Buckingham: Rhode Island, Burnside; New York, Fenton: Pennsylvania, Curtin; Ohio, Wade; Nebraska, Wade; Irdiana, Colfax; Michigan, Colfax; [lie nois, Colfax; Wisconsin, Wade; California, Wade; Missouri, Wade; Iowa, Wade; Mary- land, Cueswell; New Jersey, Ward. After the first ballot has been cast the com- plimentary names will be dropped, and the play will be opened in earnest between the balf dozen real contestants. Hamlin has some shrewd and active canvassers on the ground, who are making some impression upon the delegates. It is not probable, however, that Hamlin will receive more than the votes of the Maine delegation on the first ballot or two. The friends of Messrs. Hamlin, Wilson, Cur- tin, and Fenton are urging the unfairness and impolicy of having both the candidates for the Presidency and Vice Presidency selectea from the West. As Grant is to be the nominee for Presidency, let the East name the candida Vice President, they say. LATER. EXCITEMENT RUNNING HIGH, WADE, HAMLIN, AND COLFAX, BITTER bag oe PENNSYLVANIA TION. —. The Convention will take independent action on impeachment, and the indications are strong that seven Republi- can Senators willbe expelled from the party Logan, Judd, Sickles and others have made speeches favoring action in that n. few Conservative Republicans, led by the Chicago Post and Tribune, alone oppose it.
