FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. SATURDAY, April 18—6 P. M. The gold market has been very firm to-day, and the @uctuations were from 1384; to 138%, with the clos- Bg transactions at 138%. Loans were made at rates ranging from two to eight per cent per annnum for carrying, and at 1-32 per cent until Monday. The gross clearings amounted to $33,887,000, the gold balances to $1,710,010, and the currency balances to $2,533,354. The shipments of specie for the week aggregated $1,625,498, of which the St. Laurent, sail- ing to-day, took out $733,207, the Cuba $100,000, the City of Paris $114,520 and the Pennsytvania $84,000, These increased exports were foreshadowed by the advance in the rates of foreign exchange yesterday. Mr. C. H. Van Deventer has been admitted a member of the Gold Exchange. Thestock of coin and bullion held by the Bank of France at the 1st of the present Month was £45,887,000, while the Bank of England held £21,000,000, The leading sensation on the Stock Exchange was the passage of the Erie bill, and as soon as the News of its passage became known there was a rush ‘W sell the stock, but the bulls ran to the rescue, and the result was a decline of but little more than one Per cent, The market for all the speculative shares Was unsettled during the remainder of the day, and the fortunes of speculators appear to hinge more than ever upon Rev. Mr. Drew and Commodore Van- derbilt, 50 much so that if one of these giants con- tracted a cold or sprained his ankle it would be a matter of vast concern to his numerous followers, Another instance of stock ‘“ watering’’ has just oc- currea, The directors of the Cleveland and Pitts- burg Railroad Company have declared a stock divi- dend of ten per cent, payable on the Ist of May, to the stockholders, at the ciose of the transfer books onthe 20th of April. The system of declaring stock @ividends is a bad one, for by adding to the capital stock it diminishes the ability of the companies con- cerned to pay cash dividends, and therefore works ultimate injury to the stockholders. Money was in better supply to-day than at any time during the week, and there was no difficulty in borrowing at the legal rate in currency, the result of which was that seven per cent in coin loans were paid off in many instances. It is not likely, how- ever, that this relaxation from the recent stringency will be prolonged through the ensuing week, as it comes too suddenly to be lasting, and the bank state- ment goes to show that the city institutions are weaker in point of reserve than they were a week ago. Lenders are always anxious to make two days’ Imterest by loaning from Saturday to Monday, and it Is the almost invariable experience of Wall street that however active the money market may be it be- comes co mparatively easy at the end of each week. ‘The statement of the associated banks of this city for the week ending to-day is less favorable than was expected. The legal tender notes show a decrease of $1,148,949, the loans an increase of $1,884,261, the specie an increase of $433,492, the circulation an in- crease of $24,309, and the deposits an increase of $1,980,643. The totals of the present and last pre- vious statement are as subjoined:— Specie. 16,343,150 Circulation 34,194,272 Deposits... « 179,851,880 83 Legal tenders . 51,982,609 50,833,660 Government securities were strong at the opening and steady during the remainder of the day at a fractional advance upon yesterday’s prices. There was a moderately active investment demand, but the Speculative transactions were limited. The Sub- Treasury was not a buyer of seven-thirty notes, owing to its bid being only 106, or f a 3¢ below the current Prige. At the close the quotations were as follows:— Registered, 1881, 112% a 11234; coupon, 1881, 2K a 112%; 5-20's, registered, 1862, 104 a 10414; 5-20's, coupon, 1862, 111 a 111%; do., 1864, 109% @ 10944; do., 1865, 109% @ 109%; d6., 1965, January and July, 107% @ 108; do., 1867, 108 a 10834; 10-40’s, registered, 1012{ @ 102;, 10-40’s, coupon, 1017¢ a 10214; June 7.30’s, 1063¢ @ 10634; July 3.30's, 10634 @ 10634; May compounds, 1864, 118},; Au- gust do., 11346; September do., 117; October do., 1163. Festi} comited®ement of business the stock market was weak, and Erie sold down to 66%; and New York Central to 111; but, at the early session of the open board there was a sharp rally, owing mainly to the bears becoming frightened and rushing in to cover their contracts, while the bull cliques availed them- selves of this opportunity to bid prices up on them and sell a portion of their stock. New York Central gold at 112% a 112%; Erie, 673, @ 67%; Fort Wayne, 102, and Rock Island, 89 a 89%. Reese to Miss Mary Courtney—Brilliant Display of “Fair Women and Brave Men.” Fortress MonRog, Va., April 16, 1868. Brevet Brigadier General Chauncy B. Reese, of the United States Engineer Corps, was married last evening, at six o’clock, to Miss Mary Courtney, of Baltimore, Md. The ceremony took place at the residence of her brother-in-law, General Henry Brewerton, the Rev. Dr. Cheevers, Post Chaplain, officiating, and was the most brilliant affair that has ever taken place in this section. The bride was dressed in a heavy white corded silk, trimmed with point lace and folds of white satin, over which was thrown a thick lace veil ex- tending to her feet and trailing upon the floor. The General was dressed in full uniform, as were also his groomsmen, and he looked the thorough soldier. © ‘The bridesmaids were five in number, and were all dressed in white tarlaton and looking charmingly. Two of them, Miss Emma Eaton and Miss Sewell, were from this place, while the others, Miss Canfield, back Slaughter and Miss Calphas, were from Balti: ore, The groomsmen were :—First—Colonel H. L. Guen- ther, of the Fifth ited States Artillery; sec- ond--Colonel 0. B, Comstock, of General Grant's staf; third—Captain C. B. Phillips, of the United States Engineers; fourth—Captain M. L. Roland, of the United States Ordnance Corps; fifth—Captain Joseph P. Sanger, Post Adjutant. They were all dressed gorgeously, and with their shining epaulets and brass buttons made a very fine appearance. There was a very large attendance of ladies and gentlemen, Ta ee el) and their wives. The seanenen were in full uniform and the ladies all ressed with exquisite taste. Generals Barry, Brew- erton, Hays and Roberts were present, together with Rear Admiral H. K. Hoff, Commodore Kilty and a large number of others, The ceremony was performed in the north room of the General’s mausion, which had been tastefully decorated with flags and evergreens for the occasion. Among these were fixed a variety of transparencies and candles, which, when lighted, made a very beau- tiful pyrotechnic display. The eeremony being over the party retired to an saotaing. room, Where a su- perb supper, composed of all the delicacies of the season, was served, to which ample justice was tone by the assembled guests. After supper a reception was held until half-past eight, when the happy couple left on the Baltimore boat for an extended tour through the Northern States. The bride received a number of very handsome presents from her many friends, consisting princi- pally of silverware, which will be very convenient to ve in the house. The band of the Artillery School was in attendance and discoursed some Very fine music during the evening. After the Generai and his lady had left the band produced their stringed instruments and dancing was inaugurated, which was indulged tn until a late hour, As the boat on which the General and lady were assengers was leaving the wharf the Ordnance ae lent treated them to a fine display of fire- ror 6M. flie fort, lasting until the boat had got far out into the bay. Most of the officers of the Portsmouth Navy Yard and their ladies were present at the wedding. They came down in the tug Perriwinkie, Captain Reynolds, Which remained for them until they were ready to return, The General and his estimable lady have the best wishes of their numerous friends for a long and happy life, a pleasant trip and a safe return. A HOME IN THE ALLEGHANY MOUNTAINS, FRANKVILLE, Md., Aprii 14, 1868, To THE EpiTor or THE HERALD:— Having suffered much through the winter in Wash- ington, Governor Thomas lugged me up here with him on the eastern slope of the All¢zhany Mountains, where I am resting, raminating and recuperating, looking down from these sublime heights, with pity and commiseration akin to contempt, upon the low, paltry tricks of mice and men in the regions below, where the mercenary herd, who doat on dust, are wallowing in the filth and mire of political profi- gacy, peculation and corruption; but then I can look up in awe and admiration to Him who created the earth and these everlasting hills, and stretched out the heavgns as a curtain over them, and who only re- veals Himself to man as He did to Moses on the mount and burning bush, pouring out his indignation and wrath in torrents upon the villains in the val- leys below. Here are mountains on mountains led, primeval forests still growing wild majestic oaks and towering pines. Nature’s grandeur and glory thus combine with uplifted hand to make an lavit that God, who created a world, will save it. The above is rough, rugged rhyme. We are awaiting the progress of impeachment, with all prayer and tlence. Cut off from the communion of and never seeing the New York HERALD in fact, impeachment may prevail and the President be convicted and consigned to that obscurity from which he sprung, and that ignominy 80 justly earned, and Wade and his friends wade in, and we as igno- rant of it as Nicodemus was of the new birth. Surely, ‘we should see the HERALD, as it is as the sunlight 4 the morning to us. Were we not so immensely poor, even as a proverb, we would enclose you 4 year’s subscription in advance. The air here is pure, ex- hilarating and invigorating, never out of sight of a gushing spring of water, with frequent tron and sul- phur springs; the streams ail full of brook trout, andy the forests with game, deer, bear, foxes, who have holes, pheasants, &c., &c. The Governor and! talk gravely on heavenly and divine subjects; talk poli- tics and specu'ate on impeachment; ride over these mountains and through the dense and immense for- esis on horseback, like Don Quixote and Sancho Panzo, seeking wind mills and adventures, with bountiful beds and table, fresh milk, cream, butter, eggs, and maple sugar and syrup, so that our appe- tes are voracious and we eat enormously, and would make good colleagues of the beast in Reve a- tions, who was commanded to arise and devour much flesh. In fact, we fare sumptuously three po every day, but are uot clothed in purple or very ne linen. This vast region, full of coal, and abounding in Mountain streams and water power, has been over- looked and passed by by the migration for the great West; but the capitalists and manuf. lists, who have such keen eyes for tariis aud protec. tion and such voracious appetites for profits and per cent, will sooner or later learn to locate their manu- factories near the coal he's and on water courses, «onthe line of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad, and thus save the expense of transportation and handiing of coat and the raw material, and the paying freight and transportation on them. It is easier fcr Mahomet, and mammoth monopolists and manufac: turers to go to the mountains full of coal and iron and water power, than to trans) mountains of coal, iron, wool, cotton, &c., to the it for manu- facture. It was the coal flelds that ouilt up Manches- ter, SheMecld, Leeds and Li gg jo England, These lands are rich and productive, but have been owned in large bodies in Baltimore, THOMAS SHANKLAND, "PERSONAL INTELLIGENCE.
