FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. Sarvupay, Feb. 20~6 P, M. ‘The stock market was frm bus dui! until late in the afternoon, when a break in Erie to 665; took place, and ‘with this the entire railway list sympathized. At the Gloss ® very unsettled feeling prevailed, and the indica- tions were in favor of further demoraitzation among the ‘@peculators fora rise. The immediate cause of this ‘freeh decline of two per con: in Erie was a statement to ‘the effect that the company is about to lower its rates of fare and freight to Buiaio and to reject the preposi- ‘don of the New York Cenirai and Penasylvania Central -Companics for consolidation of earnings The Erie and ‘the Vanderbilt parties are evidently assumaing a hostile at- ‘itude toward each otner, and there is no knowing what the litigation becun between them may result in, The “Vanderbilt stocks are, however, at prosent supperted ~with remarkable firmness, Tbe report of the President ‘@f the Pacific Mai! Company was erably construed, ‘and the stock declined abot three percent. ‘the com- paoy’s quarteriy accounts, made up te the lst instant, ‘show a balance to credit of profit and loss ef $617,531, Of whieh $251,687 remained ever from the last quarter's earnings after the payment ef the dividend, showing the @arnings for the quarter just ended to have been $365,844, The company foresaw that if it paida divi- dend on tho Ist of March it would be unable te pay one on the Ist of June, aed therefore passed it, and the question of further dividends has beem postponed until May next. That tho real value of the stock will ‘be enhanced by this retention of money the Presi- deat claims to be too obvious to need argument. It ts to be regretted that the company is forced to pass dividends, but under the circumstances he con- vaiders it the best and indeed the omly safe policy. ‘Western Union Telegraph was the weakest of the misc lancous shares, and declined to 3434, and the feoling of Uneasiness which prevails with regard to this stock is ~causing considerable sales to realize, The Stock Ex- change was well supplied with mot ey on call at six Per cent, and the principal dealers in government @ecurities borrewed all they required at five per cent, There was no change in the discount line, first class commercial paper being rated at seven per cent. 1m 9 few instances, at a baif per cent below this quota- ‘tion, Mr. Henry Keep was elected a momber of the open board of brokers this afternoon by an almost ‘unanimous vote. . The gold market was very firm, especially during the afternoon, mainly in consequence of the fact of the Impeachment Committee having reported articles of tmpeachment to the Houre of Representatives and ro- ports from Washington to the effect that the removal of the President is considered ceriuin, The extreme rango ‘was from 141% to 141%. and tho latest quotation was 1415 01413. There was a moderately active borrowing domand for coin, bat the sxpply was in excess of it, and loans were made at 5 a 7 per cent for carrying, ‘The gross clearings amounted to $40,840,000, the gold fealances to $2,213,390 and the currency balances to $3,513,637.
