Most of the banks report an active denfand for loans on grain in sore, but the dispo- sition to make advances 09 such collaterals is gradually decreasing. Some time bills were offered for discount to-day and generally credited up at the usual rates. AS a general ro me bills find no favor; but at the present juncture the banks think it the better policy to accept them aod induce shipments rather than make advances ‘on grain in store. ‘The stock of wheat is steadily accu- mulating, being mow more than one million bushels, which ig regarded as being too much of a load to re orion ary packing season and until the opening of navigatio Exchange wos easier to-day, with sales in the round way at par to twenty-five cents premium, There is no change in the counter rates. A Cincinnati paper of the same date ssys:— There is still an active demand for money and the market rales close. The supply of currency is gene- rafly short. and in the open market eee ia in active demand at 12 a 15 per cent on good paper; but houses of undoubted credit are generally able to obtain from their bankers ail they require for their logitrmate business operations at 8a 10 per cent, The lack of confidence which has. been engendered by the failure of a few houses has more influence on the rates of interest in the opon market than the sctual scarcity of money, for bankers reserve their means to take care of their own depositors, preferring to take paper of thom, at lower rates of interest, knowing ito be safe. That nearly all paper is promptly met as it matures is good evidence of the sound condition of business, The receipts an demands for exchange are about equal, and neither of them heavy. The government a again transferring fands from depositories here to New York, and this helps to.keep the market firm. ites remain steady at par buying and 60c, premium selling.
