The Titian version which Madame Ristori pre- sented had little of the soarkle and pyrotechnic quality of Freaoch wit about it, and the German transia- tion makes the brilliaat characters of the piay excessive bores by ite turgid dialogue, Miss Jauauschek had, therefore, w trying task before her in attempting auch « character ag Adrienne, Her success was unexpected and decided, and her aptitude for such a lino of baving warm feeting, tender affection, and natu: affoc ed eympathy as its foun: strikingly showa, Tne love scenes between the S$ and Marshal Sa: were not degraded or turned into ridicule by maudiia expressions of affection or ran‘ing provertations of uever- dywmg constancy. She aided her rival's escape and bore ber taints and btind ra while ber heart seemed bursting with anguish at the thougnt of her lover having do. ceived ter. There was, howover, ut times degree of Coarzeness in the characterization which the ethereal Baturo of the rie xbrinks from, a teudeucy to over- act and too much restlessness and epasmodic gesture. Deborah it a “bright. particular star’’ of Mr, Bateman’s brilliant French company ut the Fourteenin street tueatre. Not moro than ono youthful actress ever mot with so hearty and unanimous a weicome from se- verest critics and @ most fastidious public as Mlle, début in Paris, when she was but sixteen 4 pupil of tie famous Samson, thoroweh stady had prepared het to make the most of the excep- tional advantages with which nature had endowed her— Inteliizence, beauty, grace, enercy, an expressive coun. tenance, a flexible and fonorous voice, and, in fine, the magnetiam of a superior artistic organization, All these qualities have been attributed to Mile. Deborah by Jalos Janiu, Léon Gozian, Paul de St, Victor, Jutes de Prémaray, Francisque Sarcey and other emivent critics, These critics, while recognizing her versatility of talent, also discovered her remarkable aptiiude for the higher wuike of tragedy. One of them declared, while she was playing at T'Ambiga Comiquo, that ‘the piace of this tragédreane is anywhere but there. No one is more richly gifted, She hae woman's beauty, a flaming giauce, an artist's soul. Her accentuation Would ally itself well with the verses of Corneille, Alas! Briseebarre,”’ Her success in classical tragedy at the Imperial Theatre of the Odéon in Paris justided these carly predictions, For two years she was equaily successful at Marsoilles, and during her representations in (he forty Freoch and foreign cities which she visited in the short epace of two months her Deriemona fuliy shared the honors of Ira Aldridge’s Othello.
