An adjournment for two weeks was moved, whon, tt is to be hoped, the case ‘will close, FOURTH BRIGADE COURT MARTIAL. In consequence of some informality tn the serving of tho papers in the case of Captains David S. Brown and George I, Clurkanaid, Twenty-second regiment infantry, National Guard, a general court martial martial is ordered to assemble at the rmory of the Fourth infantry on Thursday, October 3, at eight o'clock P, M. CAVALRY DRILLS. On Monday afternoon last the right wing of the Third regiment cavairy, comprising troops C, D, E, F and 1, assembled at Tompkius square, toder command o| Lieutenant Colonel Geils, for mounted drill There Were twenty-seven movements performed in a gonerally satisfactury manner. It we except @ certain laziness of action among some of the horses and men, and a want of uniformity in regard to the head gear (some wearing tho full dress bat fustead of a fatigae cap), as well as a want of calculation in regard to distance, tuis drili was a very fine affair, The first three or four movements wore not well performed, but subsequently tho “on right into line,” “advance in double column” and tho “closing of column on right and left squadrons’ were well exo- euted, The mounting and dismounting might havo been better, and the ‘forward into line’? was spoiled, as wes the “change front,’? both right and left forward, by the continual gaining or losing of distance, The retiring “by alternate syvadrons,"’ the “change of front, both left back and right back," and the “attention to charge forward,” wero all dons in good ahape, The drill occupied tvo hours and a half. About on hundred and seventy five officersand men were Pree sent, On Friday next the right wing of the Firat regi- ment cavalry, consisting of troops 0, E, B and K, will havea drill at Tompkins square, Line forias at one o'clock P. M. CONDITION OF THE CITY PARADE GROUND. At present the city parade ground at Tompkins square is undergoing some sort of levolimg or grading process, and it is not in a very Mt condition for the pur- poses Of inspection, drill and review. It is covered over with loo: , cette and stones not very agroeable to either of mounted or infantry troops. Thera ts great want of benches to accommodate spec- tators who visit the promenade. This matter should be attended to at once, THE TRUE TAMMAMY PROGRAMME. ‘The County Officers af No Account—The “Ring?” to Have Five Senators and a Broadway Railroad. The game being played by the Tammany plotters is deep, The offices of Sheriff and County Clerk are of no political value—merely rich ‘‘piacers,”’ like the Rogister’s office, for the men holding them; and ac- cordingly these will be given away with a sole view to securing the election of the following five Tammany “ring” and Broadway Railroad Senato Fourth dis- trict, Deputy Street Commissioner and Supervisor Tweed; Fifth district, to re-elect Senator and ox-Street Commissioner Charles G, Cornell; Sixth district, to elect Broadway Railroad Jacob Sharpo, who will receive the Tepublican nomination by running against him some weak democrat who will be sold out; Seventh district, to elect ex-Senator John J, Bradley, and Eighth district, ex-County Clerk Henry W, Genet. g@ With those five Senators the Tammany “ring” hope to be able to retain and cnlarge Twaod’s patron- in tho Street Department, clip Comptrot- ler Connoliy’s wings in the financial depariment, in- crease the power of the Mayoralty, should Heilman be re-elected in December; coairm the profits of the city Chambertain, fc he Board of Audit to becor me Teoording machine for their wishes, put a bridie on t Corporation Counsel and Rocorder, and rush through a Broadway Railroad bill which shail make all who take part in it rich men. This is oneof the most gigantic schemes ever devised forthe completo subjugation of the city, binding it band and foot, and giving it over to the spoilers a helpiess prey. Citizens should look out for what candidates are pi betore them for the Senato and Assembly this year, for wolves . around and hungry. In this view Alderman 0B) may receive the nomination for Sheriff, to ttrengthen Bradley tor Senator or Congressman, Fox may receive it to strengthen Tweed. Aidorman Loew is already as good as nominated County Clerk in order to sedvoe the Ger- man vote, which he claims to own in feo simple, into helping to elect the five “ring” Senators, Are the Ger- mans ready to be so huckstered away? THE OBJECT OF DICKENS’ VISIT TO THIS COUNTRY. TO THE EDITOR OF THE HERALD. The Dickens is coming, and we very’ mach fear that all Yankeedom is preparing to grovel and lick the dust again before him. English editors of American news- papers cry out that his welcome must be heariy—that genius must be honored, and that nobody must remem- ber how the man whom they now want us to fawn upon anew, spat upon and derided us after his frst visit to this country. Charles Dickens came here in the finah of his first fame, chiefly and avowedly with the viow of bringing about an international copyright law by which he could secure to himself a pecuniary remunoration in this coun- try for the sale of his books, Failing in influencing a nation’s legislation on this subject (though the design was laudable enough), he went home envenomed with spite against the Americans, Never was spite more ran- corous nor more persistently outpoured than bis, in “Martin Chuzzlewit” In the ‘ Notes for General Circu- lation,” and, in a less degre, in several of his subsd- uent books. ‘Chuzzlewit,”” in every where merica is spoken of (which ie a large part, for the bero travels in this country), is venomous with the most biting calumn: ly the pen of gonins, guided by the malice of Satan could indite, Not aif tne Trollopes and Halls who have written on America, combined, have shown a tithe of the fnisity, and the low bitter spite which characterize these national sianders of Charles Dickens.
