8 FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL, Torspay, Sept. 17-6 P. M. ‘The gold market was rather heavy in tone at the com- mencement of business this morning, with sales at 144; but gradually i became firmer, and the closing transac- ttons wore at the highest point of the day, namely, 1445;. The volume of speculative business was light, ‘and the “short” interest is increasing. There was a brisk borrowing demand for coin, and loans were made “flav’ and at 1 a 4 per cent per annum for carry- tog, and 28 6 per cent per annum, and 1-64 1-32 per cent per diem for borrowing. The gross clearings amounted to $60,485,000; the ourrency balances to $1,636,425, and the gold balances to $1,119,317, The firm whose attorney sold gold with- out authority, on Saturday evening, has settled the con- tracts without appealing to the Board. American silver is quoted at 534 a 6% below the price of gold, aud Mexi- ean dollars at 103 a 1034¢ in gold, The railway share market was dull and somewhat un- weitied during the early part of the day, but afterwards became strong and active, and up to the close there was ® moderately brisk demand for all the leading specu- lative shares. Bix per cent is a fair quotation for money on good col- Jaterals, although there have been not a few transactions @t seven, some of the banks aud most of the private banking houses baving advanced their rates to this point, Strong offorts have been made to establish seven &s the rule, but there is nothing in the actual condition of monotary affairs at present to warrant it, and, there- fore, six is likely to be the general rate until the drain Westward iucreases, This is the opinion also of disin- terested banis officers, and henco the majority ef outstanding loans at fve per cent have not yet been marked up, A large amount of cur- rency is evidently held out of employment for tho (ime being, in order to produce an impression that it is becoming scarce, and 80 indirectly to depress stocks, The princtpal dealers in government securities were nevertheless able to borrow ali the money they re- quired at five percent, At the same time the tendency is towards asevon percent money market; but at this rato the indications are that the supply will be abundant, The Western drain is not likely to be ona largo rcale until the pork crop calls for currency at the end of No- vember, the local centres of the West being rather bet- ter supplied with currency than usual at this season. The Treasury is disposed to guard against monetary disturbance, and it is now prepared to purchase seven-thirty notes of either series at 107, and to redeem the remainder of the August issue in lawful money, the time for con- verting them into bonds having expired. It is also pre- pared to redeom compound interest notes in advance of maturity, and itis regarded as more than probable that the Secretary will commence the issue of the author- fazed fifty millions of three per cent certificates in re- demption of the October notes, There is some talk on the street of the probability of a special demand fcr money at the ond of the month from the country na- tional banks to enable them to inake up their quarterly returns. To this we can only say that all in- stitutions which stand in any such need of tering are doing business, under false pre- tences, and the sooner they aro weeded out of existence the better. In this connection we may men- tion that the balances of country banks at this centre have already boen drawn down to a rather low point. There is a moderate demand for discounts, and first class commerelal paper 18 quoted at seven per cent, aud good but not choice at$.a9, The sooner there ts a natural ‘advance of the rate for money on call to seven per cent ‘the better it will be for both borrowers and lendors, as it will indicate a more healthful state of the circulation and of business generally than we havo latterly been accustomed to, At the early session of the open board railway shares ‘were unsettled at about the closing pnéts of last evening. Erie sold at 6774; New York Central, 10734 a 1074; Cleveland and Pittsburg, 8614, and Rock Island, 102"; a 102){. At the balf-past three open board the market was frm at the improvement. Bubsequently there was a further slight advance ina portion of the list, and at six o'clock the market was steady at the following quotations:—New York Central, 108 a 108; ; Erie, 6855 a 68%; Hudson River, 1303, a 131; Reading, 1024 a 102%; Michigan Southern, 81); a 81%; Cleveland and Pittsburg, 87 a 875; Rock Island, 103 » 10334; Fort Wayne, 695, a 69%; Northwestorn, #4 0 444 ; do, preferred, 6955 a 691; ; Pacific Mail, 14315 &@ 143%; Obio and Mississippi certificates, 27 a 27%; Western Union Telegraph, 42% a 43; Cumberland Coal, B3 a Bass.
