6 FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. Turspay, July 9—6 P.M, The raflway sbare market was drooping during the early part of tie day, but tn the afternoon it becany Deoyant and closed strong. The dull element in the street ts toutly resisting the offorts of some of the direghrs of Brie and others to depress the speculative fofling mow prevailmg, and (he indications are that thgbulis will pave mpre of their own way than the bears, /or the present, aifeasi; bat it is ® matter of very lie coase quence tofhe public which side gains the ascendancy, The su/oly of money continues in excess of the de mand, /od loans are made freely at 5 a 6 per ceut, with afew e@xo-piional transactions on government se eurtty at four, The exchanges between this pentre and fe West are about equally balanced, and ibero is ect of a drain in favor of that section of the Setting im to any material extent before the Part of August, and then it will bardiy be cient to produce moustury activity, as the money sent (0 move the crops returng, with great rapidity. is a very light volume of business sn the discount and names connecied with the dry goods trade are scrutinized, owing to the distrust growing out of @ recent {ajiure, The best grade of commercial paper fm quoted atG a 7 per cent, aud good but not prime Banes are taken at Tig a9. At the eariy session of the open board railway shares ‘were heavy, and at the firet regular board there was 00. tmprovement, Erie closed 14¢ lower than at (he same time yesterday, New York Central 3, Reading 1%, Michigan Central 3;, Michigan Sourbern 13%, North western 15, do, preferred 144, Rock Island 34, Toledo, ‘Wabash and Western 2}, Milwaukee and St Paul %, @ preferred &%, Fort Wayne 1. Government securities were active and buoyant, the dewand being espectoliy trong for five-twenties of the two issues of 1865. Goupon sixes of 1881 were 4 higher than at noon yos- terday, five-twooties of 1862 34, iusue of 1864 %, insue ef 1865 1, new issue of 1865 4% ten-forties , seven- ‘thirtios of the first series %, second series 3. The State stocks were steady. At tho one o’clock open board the market was stronver fm tone, and prices experienced a genera! advance of 1 ® % per cent, At the half-past two reguiar board the improvement made further progrees. New York Central @ooed 3 higher than at the first regular board, Erie 114, Michigan Southern 134, Reading $4, Cleveland and Pitis- warg 1%, Northwestern 1%, do, preferred 1%, Rook Talend 1%, Fort Wayne %. Government securities were @xctied and buoyant. Coupon sixes of 1881 advanced %, ten-forties 4, five-twenties of 1802 %, new insue of 1905 34-0 14, seven-thirties of the firat series {, second Series 1, third series {. The 1867 issue of five-twentics ‘sold at 10834. Among the miscellaneous stocks Western Union Telegraph was the most active and strong, the Price baving advanced to 40%. An attempt is being made to galvanize that notorious rubbish, the stock of the Cumberiand Coal Company, into activity, and the Price touched 89% ; but we warn the public against buy- ing }t at any price, as the object of the speculators hold- fing it is to make victims of all who olther buy or sell it. At the balf-past three open board thie market was strong. Erie advanced to 68%, Michigan Southera to 84, Northwestern to 45%, Western Union Telegraph to 497% and Mariposa preferred to 2434. Government securities closed strong and excited at fhe following quotations:—Registered, 1831, 109% @ 110%; coupom, 1881, 110% « 1107 8-20 coupon, 1062, 111% « 111%; 5-20 coupon, 1864, 109% a 100%; 5 20 coupon, 1865, 109% 9 109%; do. do. do., January avd July, 10834 a 108%; ; do, do, 1867, 1083¢ a 1083; ; 10-40 registered, 1023 & 102%: 10-40 coupon 2023; 2 10214; August, 7-80, 103% 9 108%; June, 7-30, 107% a 10734; July, 7-30, 1073¢ a 107%; July com- pounds, 1864,119%{ = 11034; August do., do, 118% a 119%; October do., do., 117% @ 118%; December do, @., 1174 a 117%; May do, 1865, 116% a 116%; Angust do,, do., 11534 a 11555; September do., do., 116 © 11536; October do., do., 11434 » 115, ‘The gold market was dull and rather beavy at the egmmencement of business, and sales were made as low as 133%, ; but subsequently it became firmer in tone, and am advance to 188% took place. The clesing transactions ‘wore at 1385, with very little spirit on either the bull or ear accdunt. It is noteworthy that the foreign bankers are large holders of specie, and that they appear to be ecting in concert to support the rates of exchange at ‘their prevent point, There was a moderate borrowing @emand for coin, but the supply was more than equal to & and loans were made without interest and at 24 per esnt for carrying. The official returns of the imports ‘and exports of gold and silver at the port, for the six ‘months beginning with January last, show that we @u@fored'’s diminution of our stock during that time of 69,745,856. Thus we received from California, in January, $2,482,310; in February, $1,749,900; in ‘Maroh, $1,013,984; in April, $3,162,784; im May, $1,194, O81, and in June, $2,789,251, making for the half year a total of $13,293,110. During the same poriod we im- perted from foreign porta $1,656,606, which, with tbat Peceived from California, gave usa supply of $14,849, 806. @ur exports to foreign porta, on the other band, femeunted ‘to $2;651,351 im January, to $2,124,461 in ‘Webruary, to $1,891,141 in March, to $2,261,283 im April, te $9,043,154 in May, and to $6,724,272 in June, making an aggregate of $24,505,062. As a matter of courye no allowance is here made for the precious metais received @verland, nor of those taken out of the country without being entered in a ship's manifest; but the figures given are suMcient to show that wo have been losers rather than gainers of specie since the beginning of the year, and this fact, bearing pointedly, as % does, upon supply and deroand, is not without ieftuence im strength- ening the undertone of the market for gold. The forego exchange market was very firm with @ moderately good demand for bilis, and most of the transactions in bankers’ sterling at «xtv days were at 2203, ; Lankors’ bile on England at sixty days, wero q@votedat 110 a 34; at throe days 110%; a %; commercial Bilis, 10954 a %; billaon Paris at sixty days, b.13\ 0 6.1234; at three days 511M @ 6.10.
