One of our largo institutions, whica loans very largely on mort- gages, recently commenced notifying tts patrons that after July 1 it would renew notes at the rate of seven per cent, but the money poured in so rapidiy that this plan was abandoned, and the date for demanding seven per cent was postyoned till next January, when, unless there ts some unforseen monetary panic, another delay will probably take place, The act abolishing usury in tho State was as follows:— Be it enacted, &c.. as follows:—Sxcrion 1, When there is no agreement for a difleront rate of interest of money, the same shui! continue to be at the rate of six doliars upon one hundred dollars fora year, and at the same rate for a greater or less sum, and for a longer or shorter time. Suc. 2. It shall be lawful to contract to pay or reserve discount at any rate, and to contract for ment and receipt of any rate of interest; provided, however, that DO greater rate ol interest than six percent per annum shall be recovered in any action, except when the agree- ment to pay such greater rate of interest is in writing. Src. 3, Sections three, four and nt of Nore one aed three of the general statutes, and all acts and parts of acts inconsistent herewith are bereby fepeaied. Bsc. 4 This act shall not affect any existing contract or action pending, or existing right of action, and shall take effect on the Ist day of July next. An English journal states that the French government has, for the first time, presented to the Legislature a general account of the expenses of the Mexican oxpe- dition. It appears that the total disbursements in 1861, °62, 163, 64, '65, '66 and '67 was 363,155,000f, (£14,526,- 200), from whico, however, must be deducted 61,975,000f. paid by Mexico, ivaving 301,190,000 (£12,047,600). The 61,975,000f. were thus composed:—Receipts in 1864 and 1865, under the treaty ef Miramar, 37,500,000f.; sale of 47,625 Mexican debentures to the Comptoir d’Escompte, 14,287,000f.; interest received on Mexican bvonds, 8,100, 000! reimbursement on account of Vera Cruz Railway, 1,500,000f., and levy on Mexican customs, 585,000f, But the aforesaid 301,190,000f., though a very formidable figure, do not represent all the outlay France has incurred for Mexico. Thus, a portion of a sum of 31,713,000f , spent for different expeditions, ‘was absorbed by that country, and the indirect loss caused by the disturbance in trade which the expedition occasioned cannot be inconsiderable. It is said, too, that the stores in the arsenals have been reduced very low by the large quantities consumed in Mexico. AS a set-off, howover, the French government holds 95,232 Mexican bonds, A Liverpool journal has the following :— Mesars. Fraser, Trenholm & Co., of Liverpool, who, during the recent war in America, acted as English financial agonts of the Confederate government, and who recent at stopped payment, callod their creditors to- gether i corel on the 18th, From a statement prepared by Mr. Banner, the accountant, it appeared that the froes abilities were £1,218,000; unsecured creditors, £511,000 ; catimated assets, £25: 000 ; assets on Mr. Pricieau’s private estate, £8,000, Mr. Banner ex- plained that the statement he bad prepared bad refer- ence soleiy to the English firm, and that there were two in the American firm, who had no connection ‘with the Liverpool one. In America the United States government bad taken proceedines agatnst the American frm, to attach the whole property of the firm in that country, and that actions were also pending in this country, on behalf of the same government, against the Liverpool! firm, to claim ail of the firm which could be shown to have arisen fands tranernitted from America during the war.
