—= + FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. Wenwespay, June 26—6 P. M. There has been an active brokers’ market for railway ehares to-day, with Erie and Michigan Southern as the ‘favorites, and the tendency of prices was decidedly in favor of the balls til! late in the afternoon, when a gon- ‘eral decline took place under sales to realize profits, ‘The preponderance of financial strength appears now to ‘De on the bull side, but the public evinces no interest in the movement, and without outside support it cannot make steady progress, As soon as the brokers and other professional speculators ‘who are ‘short’? “cover” their contracts and tho ‘bulls attempt to realize prices will fall, and the ‘Preps which support the market are so slender that they «may give way at anytime; and yet most of the stocks on the list, provided the roads they represent were well ‘managed, are cheap at current quotations as invest- meats, The consolidation of the Buffalo and State Line and the Erle and Northeast Railways was completed yesterday by the action of the stockholders of the former company in agrecing to the terms proposed by the latter company by a vote of 85,036 shares out of a total of 39,637, , The consolidated line ia to be known as the Buffalo and Erie Railroad Company. The bull leaders in Michigan Southern are putting this forward as a preliminary step towards the consolidation of a line of railways between Buffalo and Chicago, with Michigan Southern as the western link. Nothing, of course, is said about the delay necessary to obtain the consent of the Legislatures of the States concerned to the proposed arrangement, ‘The change in the managemont of the Cloveland and ‘Toledo Company made at the recent annual clection is aid to bo significant of the other changes referred to, and it is to the interest of thoso who are bolling Michigan ‘Southern to convey this idea ‘40 the stroet, whether founded upon fact or not, Wo re. member that not very long ago some of those who are mow in this bull movement were operating for a rise in Michigan Southern, in conjunction with some of its present managers,-and thoy then declared its stock to be equal ia value to Michigan Central, and that it would Day dividends regularly {rom that time forward; but the assertion was simply a deliberately concocted lie, They addled the street with their stock at big prices, and ‘wore ready to lie again respecting sotme other stock. Time bas proved that Michigan Southern is a Poor property under its present management, ‘and whether it can be made a paying one or wot isunceriain. Itis not probable, however, that its present munipulators care anything about the value of the property. They simply aim to find a profitable mar- ket for the stock they are carrying, and to got the street ‘to assist them in the exploit, Neither Vanderbilt nor Consolidation occupies much of their thoughts, except im the manufacture of street rumors, Notwitnstanding the increased activity of business on the stock Exchange, the supply of money continues abundant at six percent on railway and miscellaneous collaterals, and five on governments. ‘The probabilities are, therefore, strongly against any stringency arising from the preparations of the national banks for their quarterly returns on the 1st proximo. ‘he discount Une continues dull, and the best grade of commercial paper is quoted at seven per cent, and in some Instances at ahalf per cent below thisrate. At Chicago bank deposits are reported to be running low, and ‘the money market is rather close. At Cin- cinnati it, is substantially unchanged, and the demand for acgommodation is mainly to carry over ld business, although arrangements are beginning to be made for the incoming wheat crop. Wool is at the @ame time creating some demand for money, but this is as yet light, owing to the difference between the ‘views of buyers and sellers and the consequent inac- tivity of the trade, The payment of the July divid ends ‘at this centre will throw a large amount of unemployed @apital upon the market, and this will add still further ‘to the prevailing ease. But the simultaneous disburse- ‘ment of eighteen millions of gold by the Treasury, in payment of the July coupous, will quicken, to some extent, the movement of capital. Warsrrown, N. Y., June 2%, 1867. Your late article in regard to the conversion by the Trea- sury Dopartment, for the benefit of certain national banka, of a large amount of United States registered five-twenty bonds, 1862, into coupon bonds, forcibly reminds me of the refusal ofthe Department to exchange for Wooster Sherman’s Bank (then doing business in the city of Ne: York under State laws) sevoral thousand dollars of endorsed coupon bonds of 1862 into clean bonds of the same description. After sending to Washington twice, at considerable expense for express charges, I was com- pelled to necept registered bonds or retain those endorsed with coupons, neither of which would sell in market within three or four cont as high as clean coupon bonds of the class of 1862. Why tl outrageous par- valle enabling national banks to convert registered bonds by the million into coupon bonda, while State Danks are refused the privilege of exchanging their coupon bonds (having passed through the State Depart- ment, with the Superintendent's endorsement) for clean bonds of the same description? Is 3 not enough that tho authorities at Washincton, while steadily refusing to allow individual state banks to avail themselves of the ‘benefits’ of the law of Con- gress permitting State banks to convert themselves into national banka, so sharply apply the penalties of the same law and drive out our circulation by a ten per cent embargo? Well, be it so, and let us now go in for the Heraty’s doctrine to suppress all bank circulation, both Siate and national, and adopt United States Treasury notes as the only currency for the country until we are enabled once more to resume the gold standard, which per.od, God grant, may not be far off.
