- FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. Tuurspar, June 13—6 P. M. Tho railway share market was somewhat variable but generally firm this morning, and in the afternoon it be- came dull, with a declining tendency. The “short” interest appears tobe light, many of the recent bears having turned bulls; but not a few influential houses ‘are throwing cold water on the bull movement in order that they may be enabled to buy stocks at lower prices than those now current. To this end there is a good deal of talk just now about a threatened reduction of rated of freight on the lines extending westward and ruinous competition generally, and prudent men are deterred thereby from buying stocks, not knowing how much fire may lio beneath the smoke, The leading railways are at present doing a rather light business; but in the event of the crops being abundant, as they promise to be, their freight traffic will be largely increased, and their earnings correspondingly augmented. Each road, too, having enough business of its own, will be leas likely than at present to enter into close competition with other lines, The absence of outside support is seriously against a steady rise; and next in importance to this is the fact that tho lead. fog bulls are financially weak. The monetary situation is in their favor, and so are the low prices at which many of the leading stocks are solling; but as speculation is confined almost entirely to the brokers and other professional speculators, what one makes an - other loses in the street, and there is vo fresh capital coming in to replenish exhausted coffera, The condition of monetary affairs in Europe continues to be reassuring, money, not only in England, but all over thé continent, being both cheap and abundant. The return of the Bank of England for the week ending May 29 shows a further increase of £753,215 in the bullion, making the reserve in both departments £20,417,283, against only £11,878,775 at the same time last year, and 215,838,491 in 1865. The bank rate is now two anda half per cent, At the same date in 1866 it was teu per cent, and at the same date in 1865 three and a half per cent. | The gold market was /steady, the range of the day having been from 137 to 137!4, with the closing trans- actions at 3P. M. at 13734. The volume of business was very light and speculation almost at a standstill. Loans were made without interest and at 2a 4 per cent for carrying, The steamer Deutschland took out $162,694 in specie, ‘The money market has been easy at six per cont, with exceptional transactions at seven on mixed collaterals, While on government coliaterais the invariable rate was six save in rare instances where balances were left with the feading dealers at five. There is a very moderate ‘amount of the best grade of commorcial paper offering and this is taken at 7a 734 per cent, with exceptions at 8. A Cincinnati journal of the 10th inst. says that money there continues to work close, owing to the de- ‘line of the currency balances at the banks, however, more than to any increase in the demand for loans, ‘whioh is moderate, and in keeping with the general duinéss of business. Money is being withdrawn to the country to pay for the wool crop, and until it flows back again currency is expected to be scarce, Good com- mercial paper is generally discounted at 9 a 10 per cent, the extreme rates being 8 a 12. At Chicago the money market is equally close and great caution is observed ” in discounting, a recent failure there having added to the distrust of credits, At the first regular board railway shares wore rather active, New York Central and Northwostern being the most largely dealt in, although they were weaker than the remainder of the list, The recent advance in Pacific ‘Mail was not fully sustained, undersales to realize. New York Central closed +4 lower than at the eame time yester- day ; Michigan Southern 3, Northwestern %, Pacific Mail +254, Boston Water Power 34, Quicksilver 13g, Canton %, Western Union Telegraph %. Hudson River was % higher, Reading %, Illinois Central 3, Cleveland and Pittsburg 3, Cleveland and Toledo 1%, Rock Island , Northwestern preterred 3;, Milwaukeo and St. Paul pre- forred 5, Alton and Terre Haute 2%, Ohioand Mississippi certificates 3. Government securities were firm, but Gull. Coupon sixes of 1881 and five-twenties of 1864 ‘advanced 3, and the new isso of 1865 and ten-forties 3M. North Carolina sixes (new) advanced 1%, and Ten- s({ednee ines (new) declined 1%. At the one o'clock open board. New York Cencral sold at 102; Erie, 60% a %; 2 Hudson River, 109; Michigan Southern, 68% ; Cleveland ting Pittsburg, 76 %; Cleveland and Toledo, 118: Rock Island, 90% a 91; Northwestern, 35%{; do. pre- ferred, 50% a %; Pacific Mall, 1383, a 139; Western Union Telegraph, 44%. At the second regular board the market was dull and generally lower. Erie closed § lower than at the first regular board; Reading %, Cleveland and Pittsburg %, Cleveland and Toledo 34, Northwestern proferred 5%, ‘Ohio and Mississppi certificates 34, Pacific Mail %, Quicksilver 3, Western Union Telegraph 3. New York Contrai was 3 higher, Rock Island 4. Government securities were firm. Coupon sixes of 1881 and five- twenties of 1864 advanced 3. Tennessee sixes (new) declined 34, and Missouri sixes advanced +. During the rest of the afternoon the market was quiet, and at a quarter to six o'clock the following quotations were current :—New York Central, 1023¢ @ 34; Erie, 603, 8 54; Roading, 1073¢ ® 34; Michigan Southern, 68} a % ; “Cleveland and Pittsburg, 763 a %; Rock Island, 90% 4; Fort Wayne, 9734 a 35; North Western, 35%¢ do, preferred, 505 a %; Ohio and Mississippi ceri! cates, 25.0 3{; Pacific Mail, 13934 a 140; Western Union “Telegraph, 4434 0 45. Government securities were steady at the close of ‘business and quoted thus:—1881 coupon, 11244 % ; five- twenties, coupon, 1862, 110 3; five-twenties, coupon, 1864, 106% a %; five-twonties, coupon, 1865, 107 a 3; five-twonties, coupon, 1865, new issue, 10034 a jg; ten- forties, coupon, 100 a 14; seven-thirty notes, first series, 10634 & % ; seven-thirty notes, second series, 105% a 7%; seven-thirty notes, third series, 105% a %. ‘We understand that the largest railway consolidation -ever attempted in this country is about to be consum- mated. Is embraces five or six corporations, whose lines extend from this centre to am extreme western point, and all the details ot the agreement have beon agreed upon. The arrangement is such as promiess to prove damaging to the interests of the railways running ‘westward who are not in the combination, and itis not improbable that they will be forced in self-defence to form a new consolidation among themselves, Such an arrangembnt as the one we refer to must have been in contemplation when the Pennsylvania Central Railway Company applied » the Legislature some months ago for an increase of Gapital, In the course of a fortnight further particulars may transpire publicly. ‘The foreign exchange market was quiet and firm. bills on England at sixty days were quoted at 110 a 81034 ; at three days, 1103¢ a 5%; commercial bills, ; bills on Paris, at sixty days, 6.12% 0 5.13%; public. At the first board Quarts Hiti closed 10c. higher ‘than at the same time yesterday, solling at $1 50; Con- solidated Gregory Gold 25¢., selling at $6 85. Lacrosse Gold sold at $1; New York Gold, 75c,; Rocky Moun- tain, 6c, At the second board Consolidated Gregory Gold closed 10c. lower than at the first regular board, selling at $6 75. Corydon was 100, higher, selling at 0. © Ee recetver of the First National Bank of New Or- feans has made his report, by which it appears that the total assets of the bank are $2,250,000, of which $400,000 are considered doubtfal and more than $600,000 es bad. The liabilities to individual depositors amount $998,000 and the indebtedness to the government is 4 $216,000, The liabilities of the directors as makers and endorsers of bills amount to $647,000. The circulation of tho bank is estimated at $180,000, Whats commen- tary this is upon the national banking system, and what ‘a fraud upon the public! Whore was the Comptroller of the Currency with bis examiners into the socounts of aational banks, to suffer such corruption as distinguished the maniigement of this institution?
