About twenty minutes to four o’clock the packing wings of the cylinder got loose, and we stopped the en- gine immediately, 1 sent over to Mr. King’s for a man to help me fix them, as we were im a hurry, and wanted to start again as soon as poesible, While doing this we shut off the steam from the engine. Down the backstretch the trotting was very One and extremely fast, the mare hanging very close to him, although it was shrewdly surmised that it was in his power to have somewhat widened the gap at his discretion. They passed the half-mile pole with Dexter about # length in front, with a somewhat nearer approach of the mare as they caine down the Flushing end. They passed the three-quarter pole pretty much in the same way; but as they swumg around the turn and on to the homestretch Dexter appeared a length in advance, and, pressing steadily onward, reached the ecore about baif a length ahead, a winner of the heat in 2:24, the quickest heat to wagons on record by one second.
