This fair is the product of the joint endeavors of fhe Indies belonging to the various Catholic congrega- ons in this city, and it is expected to surpass anything ever gotten up for similar purposes, The object isa Christian one—providing for the wants of the orphan and the outcasi—and the pecuniary seturns that the fair ducies will reap in behalf of their darling project will, without doubt, be fully commensurate with the proud reputation that New York has ever borne for being the iret city on the continent (if bot in the worid) for phil- anibropy and charity. Tkkarment OF CAR Horses.—An article having ap- peared in the HeRaLo, under the head of ‘Voice of the People,” commenting unfavorably upon the treatment ef horses employed in connection with the Fourth ave- Bue raliroad, the stables were yesterday visited, their condition, after minute inquiry and investigation, being uch in all respects as to convince as of the injustice of the strictures of our correspondent. The stables wore devigned specially with a view to secure the utmost com- fort and convenience attainable. Five hundred horses are employed in the city department and one hundred in counection with the New York and Harlem Railroad— those used on the Thirty-second street cars making three inpe per day, and those empioyed on the City Hall sod Thirty-fourth street ferry cars makigg only two, ‘Fhe allowance of food to the horse per day is eighteen pounds of corn meal—parity being secured by grinding an the mills of the company—mixed with about fifteen per cent of oats and from six to eight pounds of the best hay which the market affords. Her face is still quite dis- figured, and the horror portrayed at times in hor coun- tenance suggests mental anguish which dooms her to endure the spectacle of past terrors. It has been found ‘that her arm is broken, caused by the violent and con- vulsive writhing while tied up, when the application of the pickle would gail the wound. Reaching the middie of the plank her foot slipped and both children fell into the water. The elder child was rescued at once by a woman who witnessed the occurrence ; the other was swept off by the current, and when taken out life was found to be extinct. Severe nur Just,—A man named Jobn Kause has been sentenced to serve one year in the county jail for having caused a disturbance at the recent election held at White Plains, and assaulting an old man named Benjamin Williams, whom he beat in a most unmereiful manner.
