Henry B. Jenkins—History of the Phenix Bank Defaication—Au Old Mnn’s Crime, Folly and Punishment, &c. At half-past one o'clock on Saturday morning, in one of the ward rooms of St. Luke’s Hospital, the curtain foll on the last scene of one of the most remarkable sequent upon the crime with which he stood charged. ‘The facts of the case aro briefly as follows:—On tho ‘afternoon of August 10, 1865, Henry B. Jenkins was ar- reated on the complaint of John Parker, cashior of the Phoenix Bank, on a charge of embezzlement, and on the same day was locked up to await an examination. The ‘mount of his defaications, after several days spent in inspecting his books, was ascertained to be: about $800,000, and his mournful fate stands out in bod and terrible relief as a fearful examplo of the consequences of yiolding to the temptation-of dishonesty. The un- fortunate man died in almost absolute want, save only such ministrations as his relatives and friends were wont to bestow upon him in his hours of affliction. Tho money which he so recklessly or thoughtlessly con- verted to unlawful uses vanished like @ mist iu Jess time than it had occupied him in appropriating it For some time previous to his detection and arrest he appears to have fallen into the hands of others whose designs seemed to be to extort the ill-gotten gains from the tem; ‘and fallen man. This person had, it a » aided Jonkine ta the abacmaction of the funds the false balancing of the beoks, and his share of the ill-gotten proceeds amounted to about $100,000. On the evening of the same day upon which Jenkins was arrested, Earle also was taken into cr and locked up in a cell of the Twenty- ninth precinct station house. For @ time during the evening he conversed pleasantly, but subsequently Decame apparently depressed, and laid down. te sleep. shortly after eleven o'clock.
