! 8 CONNECTICUT POLITICS. SPECIAL CORRESPONDE¥ce OF THE HERALD. Banger to the Democratic Caure. - Haxrroxy, Coun., March 23, 1867, ' Is ts reported that the copperheads will bring out owe of their ultra speakers during (his the last week of the canvass. If they do so the radical papers will re- port their epeeches verbatim, or at least select the most ebjectionable portions of their remarks for comment. The copperheads have been kept in the background thus Yar with infinite advantage to the democratic ticket; but if ‘hey show their beads now the effect will be most disas- Mr. W. H. Barnum (opponent of the showman) trous. says that the very appearance of some of these men on fhe platform, at a democratic meeting, will have a damaging efiect, Bat such men as W. W, Eaton (the most the copperheads, as well as one of the smartest stuwp orators mm the State) propose to open the ball, bot etforte are being made to choke him off, Seymour and Toucey would also like to secure a portion of the credit in case the State is revolutionized; but if they are allowed to come out there will assuredly be very litue for the democrats Lo crow over. At tbe present hour the advantages are decidedly in favor of the English ticket. The republicans are confes- sedly lukewarm, and some of the leaders despair of car- rying the State. Several of their speakers from a dis- tance bave made some wifling excuse for not fulfilling their appointments after coming here and looking over the prospects... This was the case with General Nye and Carl sehurz. The unpopularity of the hambug Barnum adds to the general demoralization of the republicans, while the perpetnal fire of the Heraup at him and his rad ical coadjutors contributes greatly to the discomfiture ‘of the dominant party im the State. But, favorable as the prospects are for the democratic ticket, their success may be turned into an ignominious defeat, if the copper- heade sre permitied to come out from the seclusion to whieh they bave thus far been wisely consigned during the presebt campaign. Commotion—Anti-Rad- jeai Gathering in afford—The Democrats jiu High Glee—Accessions to the Demo- eratic Ranks—Governer Hawley Accused of ‘Treachery—Certain Republicans Will Not “Crowd Among the Mourners” if He is De- feated, &c., Ke. Starrorp, Tolland county, Conn., } March 25, 1867, 5 Probably no manufacturing town in this State bas felt the depressing effect of the unsettled state of the country more sensibly than this. In former times the cheering and alinost incessant sound of the spindles of cighteen large cotton and woollen factories was to be heard, while sow the ‘oome of many of them Jie comparatively idle, and within a wedék five or six of them will be obbged to suspend operations altogether, It is here that nearly one-half of the whole satinet used in this country is manufactured, giving employment to several hundred persons, who will now be thrown out of work. The greatest market for the description of goods manvfac- vared here was formeriy in the South; but the legis- Jation of Congress has closed that market nearly com- pletely and left large amounts of goods on the hanés of the manufacturers. The South want the goods but have not tbe means to pay for them, and the prospect of their ever being so is considered so slim, with the syle of legislation now prevailing at Washington, shat the manufacturers dare not incur the very heavy eapenses of keeping their mills in full operation. This fact contributes largely to the unpopularity, of the dom- mast party in the manufacturing districk, where we find many of the most extensive manofaturers who Sormerly acted with the republicans now sting against them and denouncing the conrse of the radicals, espe- cially with reference to their oppressive teqalation in xegard to the South. The county of Tollajd, which with Hartford county comprises the First Conjreesional ‘to Congress a liberal and able democrat in p! wealous radical. 48 an evidence of the temper of the peopie fening l, al ough re in an almost impassable eondit on om of & radical meeting a few evenings before eerie’ Meng while they udge ar ke; 'ssiesip) Bpo bad nobly stood np for, tho on > a darkest lous period. Mr. Cleveland followed ina stirring speech, in which he explained his reasons for oo the pemmee party, and, like bis friend Babcock, who had pre epared most of the platforme, addresses and resolutions be republican party since 1858, joining im the great consti- Wational movement led off by the democratic party in Connecticut. He claimed that the war was fought for the Union, and now that the rebellion was crushed, the Union saved and siavery abolished, the great aim aud ambition of every true patriot should be to see peace and prosperity restored throaghont the land. He claimed that Congress had wens Ramey J in imposi tary despotism upon States a8 muecn in the Uni as Connecticut or Massachusetts, and asked why. ii ten States were ont of the Union, as the radicals averred, ~~ Be not change the old flag, and blot out ten of its it stars?
