From she every applied to subscribed from $6 to $15. Martin, as the subscription list shows, had called at least eight times at the store of Mr. H. B. Claflin, on each of which he received $10, and doubtless many other merchants bave received repeated calls from Mar- un; for, according to appearances, be was disinclined to shun any gentleman who would be at ail likely to adda dollar hi subserpiion list, Every hotel, baoiki house, shipping office, &c., im the city had been visit at least once or twice a year by Martip, aod alike with the merchants, to aid Yeaterday, when he reappeared asked Mr, Lewis for further aid. Instead of receiving it, im the manner he anticipated, Martin was jpon by officer Green, of the Fifth precinct, and taken to the Tombs. On searching the prisoner the subscription list, containing the names ot at least two thousand merchants and other business men of this city, with the sums subscribed by ench, making in the aggregate not lees than $10,000, ‘was found upon bis person. That the accosed should have been nearly nine years engaged in this species of swindling and not detected till now, seems remark- ‘able, but ws nevertheless trae. Mr, Lewis made a.com- piaint against Martin, charging him with obtaining money ‘under false pretences, and Justice Hogan committed him tothe Tombs for trial in default of bail, it appeering from Alfred Carson, Superintendent of the Insura:ce Patrol, that Martin is not 4 member of the patrol, and to the beet of his belief never has been. The accused is a native of this city, a boatman by occupation, and had nothing to eay in relation to the charge preferred avai ast him, [tis understood that Martin has squandered moat of the money thus fraudulentiv obtained in purchasing lottery policies, reaiizing absolutely nothing on his in- vestments. His subscription list is believed to be nearly one bundred feet in length, and the firet part of it was £0 matted together that it could not be anioiied without tearing. QUEENS COUNTY INTELLIGENCE.
