8 FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. Mewar, March T1—-@ P.M. ‘Tne stock market has beer active aud somewhat buoy- ent to day, its upward impale being fmmediately and muinly due to the course of Erie, which bas experienced @ further sharp advance under the offorts of a combina- tion. Opinions are, as usual, divided as to whether the ent of @ permanent im~ Present rice is the commenc Provament or merely « spasmodic movement, Much @oponds upon the action of tue operators 1D Asrie ws Ww the future of the rest of the speculative list If it is well mustained a moral support will bo given to therest of the marko!, and other operators will take hold of other stocks, one by one, and another period of active apecula- tion in railway shares may bo the result; but shouid Erie break the whole market will sympathize with it, and deroralization will be the result, ‘The supply of money was more abundant than last week to the Stock Exchange, and loans were made in many cases at six per cent, although the rate usually asked by the banks was seven. In one o two excep- tional cases large amounts were Joanod to first class parties on government securities at five, In the dis- count I'ne there is increasing activity, and the beat grado of paper submits to seven por cont, ihe amount of ‘cormmercial paper offering is probably ten times a; large as it wasa year ago. The statement of the associated’ banks for the week ending on the 9th inst. had a favor- able effect in strengthening confidence in a continuance of monetary ease, The legal tender notes show an in- crease of $1,509,245 and the deposits of $2,264,618, The Joans bave increased $1,975,027, owing chiefly to the enlarged: volume of business on the Stock Exchange. ‘Tho specie has decreased $711,199, owing to withdrawals for customs duties, and the ciroulation has increased $110,378, The totals of the present and previous state- ments stand thus: — March 9. $202,141,458 10,868, 162. Perhaps no fire department in the world turns outa finer body of men or makes a grander display than the firemen of Now Orleans, ‘heir steam fre engines and hose carriages are of rare beauty and workmanship, and are decorated with flowers, ban- ners, &c, Their horses are not the least. interesting fea- ture of the parade. Between the ropes held by the fire- men these pets march along with arched necks, keeping the steady steps with @ precision truly remarkable, mov- ing or stopping simultaneously with the procession. They appear to know the difference between @ parade and a funeral, for whfle in the former they are proud bearing and spirited, in the latter they march mournfully along im the rear of the hearse, Some of these noble animals aro among the haudsomest in the country, and done duty as “tiremen” for ten, tweive and fifteen years, ‘the Stars and Stripes were well represented. Oa one ongine, however, might have been seen the» motto, “United we stand, Divided we Falif,” while the hubs of the wheels were decorated rod, white and red—a curi- ous contradiction.
