, : AFFAIRS IN MASSACHUSETTS. QUR BOSTON CORRESPONDENCE. Snow and Sleighing in City an mery—New York Trotters o Geuthia mesa Tue fe! ‘Hear Mass Mectu.. Oporatives—Miscellan glen. . Bostox, v2: I There was never a more general sleighing carnival in ‘Massachusetts than has existed during the latter part of “this week, It may also be safely said that there never ‘was more snow on the ground than now. In and around Boston the depth is not remarkable, but in the western counties there are, without oxaggeration, drifts for miles ‘in extent of an average depth of fifteen or twenty feet. Nothing of the kind was ever known here before, The vanous thoroughfares to and from the hub have been ~extremely lively with gay turnouts and the sleighing ‘mania seems to have extended to all classes, The win- ‘ter sports in New York differ easentially from those in Boxon. In Gotham the skating ponds onthe Park are *the chief attractions, Here the highest ambition of ‘man and woman is to be seated behind a “Mast herso with his head pointed towards Brghtou, Some few New Yorkers seem also to have become partial to this Puritanical, but, notwithstanding, ‘rather rational winter amusement. Besides a largo » Bumber who are here from the metropolis and patronize the livery stables, there are a multitude who have brought their own teams, Among the most notable from New York on the Brighton road to-day, were “Honest Alien,” the best son of Ethan, ‘Nancy Fat” and mate, “Lady Sherman,” “Blue Bird,” and “Young Litchfield." Others are expected next week if the @leighing holds good, and there is every indication that ‘at will. A atogular swindling operation on a grand scale was ‘disclosed here to-day. The victim is Francis E. Faxon, an ex-alderman and a popular and respected citizen, and the swindler is a Jewish Rabbi named simon C. Noot, whose whole life up to this transaction had been above reproach. Some two years since the Rabbi Noot, who had officiated ina Jewish synagogue, called upon Mr. Faxon and wished to obtain @ loan of a thousand dollars for the purchase of a few diamonds, offering to share the profits with Mr. Faxon. Shortly after another investment on similar Conditions was preferred, and before accepting it Mr. Faxon instituted very careful inquiries into the anto- cedents of the Jew. He found that he wasa native of Amsterdam, and not only a skilful cutter of diamonds, ‘but one of the best judges of the article in this country, For seven years he was a well known and highly re- spected Rabbi in Philadelphia, where he enjoyed not only ‘the confidence of his people, but of the citizens gene- rally. It was also asc°rtained that in all his dealings he ‘Was prompt and trustworthy. In addition to these busi- Ness qualifications, which seemed sufficient to establish his credit, Mr. Noot was noted for his great talent as one Of the most accomplished linguists of the country, his attainments as a Hebrew and Sanscrit scholar being known to the wise professors of Harvard, who were on terme of intimacy with him. These facts, coupled with @ most pleasing address, induced Mr. Faxon to listen to his proposals, and since then the transactions between them have been on an extensive scale. Mr. Noot was wot only in the habit of loaning money obtained from Mr. Faxon, taking diamonds for security, but of pur- cobasing at times, at great bargains, costly gems, jewelry, fancy articles, &c. ever proved faithful in keeping dhis word with an exactness which disarmed all suspi- cion, and thus gradually he not only secured the confidenco of the gentleman he has wronged, but of all who had dealings with him.
