Maramoxos, Jan. 7, via New Onzeays, Jan. 11, 187. ‘The liberal forces of Coahuila entered Matamoros on ‘WDecember 27. They had seventy wagons and eighteen pieces of artillery with them. They are to proceed im- “mediately to the interior. A sufficient number of wagons and the transportation ‘mecessary for a body of ten thousand men have been “pressed into the service. Cortina, who et last accounts was ia pursnit of Canales om the read to Vietorm, bas turned up fn front of “‘Mata- ‘mores to-day. A report has been circutcted that ha tn- tends to attack this place; but the forces will have to be s@trong and well directed that will overcome the prepara- Mona that have been vigorously going on here for some time, Cortine may have bean hurried hither by some ‘Taleo report about Canales being hereahouts, ‘We have recelved papers from Matebuala up to De- eomber 27, and-from Monterey to the 2d instant. They make no mention of San Luis Potosi having been occu- pied by the liberals, The occupation, however, of Gua- dalajara and Aguas Caliente is confirmed. The command of General Rocha, which recently ope- vated against’ Matamoros in conjunction with General Escodedo’s, had arrived at Monterey on December 21 ‘and were euthusiastically received. Generals Escobedo and Rocha were to leave Montercy Fanuary 7, for Matehuala on the road to San Luis, to join Trevino who was reported to have beaten Mejia at Gua- dalacazar, half way between Matehuala and San Luis. Colonel Sedgwick is still at Brownsville, He justifies his action in occupying’ Matamoros, about a month ago, b; orders aud private letters. The Report About Corona Probably 1 feunded-Pontoons to be Inspected nud vairy Ordered to the Rio Grande-Depre- dations by Mexican Judinns Said to he the Cause, &e. ‘New Orvmans, Jan. 11, 1867. Noue of the official despatches from Browneyille that ‘nate been received here to-day at military beadquariers confirm the alarming reports by the Austin from Brazos about the situation at Matomoros, as the military com mander at. Rrownevilie reports nothing remarkable con- verning the movements of Cortina; and there was no ferious interruption of trade between Matamoros and all points of the northern and middie sections of the tnterior. It is officially reported from Galveston that General Reynolds was to have left that place on the 7th for the Rio Grande. _Colonet Gillesple, of,General Sheridan's staff, wag to- day orders’ to proceed without delay to Galveston, for ‘the purposs of inspecting the pontoon trains at that ‘point, » Wt appears that the Indians are becoming very trouble- some vr: (he Northwestern frontier, as orders have been tmaned to forward cavalry in that direction—specially to %e neighborhood of Laredo, just above the head of ‘navigation On the Rio Grande, In this way their depre- dations amd escape into Mexico cannot fail to be cut off SOUTH AMERICA. - “Phe Awezen aad Other Rivers Open te the ‘Trade of the World--Riot in Pernambure— Ree ey nated Lines t Atlantic and Pacific: Senbourda--Commerctal, &c. » Bro Januro, Dec, 3, via Lispon, Dev. 25, 1866. , The rivers Amazon, Tocanting and San Francisco have Deon thrown open to the trade of all nations. At Pernambuco there was a riot between Brazilians gad Portuguese, Of the latter eighty were Killed, aud the Vortaguese, combined with the English in Pernam- “euro, killed one hundred Brazilians afterw ards. Three Hundred soldiers of the Brazilian army have ar- rived at Montevideo, and the transpor{s Julia and Dili. Jente are expected to arrive at an carly date with seveu banks having been generally disposed to extend all the facilities in their power to borrowers on the Exchange. The would-be panic makers have successful than they anticipated, and ecquired a very unouviable notoriety, Tess bave will possibiy soon lead te a publication Monday. Some of this money was engaged without boing taken, the interest being paid om condition of its certified checks through both banks and private lenders, and alt the machiperv of credit was employed to shut legal tender notes out of ciroglation. The result is par- tiatly seen iu ¢he returns of the Clearing House this morning. The Rank of the State of New York was ‘Sreditor to the extent of $3,800,000, the Tenth National Bank $1,250,000, the Bank of the Republic $500,000, and the Bank of Commerce: a total of $5,760,000, while nearly all the other banks were debtors. ‘One of the dangers attending a forced contraction of the currency is seen in the power which it enables a fow unscrupulous speculators to wield over the moncy market, to the disturbance of values and monetary affairs generally, not only here, but all over the coup- try. The depression in trade ig on the increase andthe people are looking forward to the fature with apprehon- sion, al! confidence in the present management of the Treasury having been lost. It is therefore the duty of Congress to take into immediate consideration the sub- ject of the currency and avert a commercial and fnancial crisis by arresting a further coutraction of legal tender notes, except perhaps to a very limited extent in compound interest notes as they mature, say from ten to twenty miilfons per annum. If this is not done widespread disaster must ensue, The stock market was unsettled at the opening of business, and prices were in some insiantes lower than at the clove last evening, Erie having sold down to 6134 1%.
