FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. ‘Turspay, Dec. 18—6 P. M. The speculative epirit on tho Stock Exchange con- Unues strong, and railway shares are in the ascendant, ‘The most ective are Erie, Michigan Southern, Fort Wayne and Northwestern. The demand for the last montioned is based upon the large earnings of the rond bose for the second week of October having been $159,684, against $139,500 for the corresponding wook last year—showing an increase of $19,974. Confttence in the valuo of railway property constitutes the main support of the present speculation for a rise; and next to this in importance to the bulls is the abundance of money. The Stock Exchange is now fresly sup- pled at six per , and tho exceptions at five are becoming more numerous. The tendency towards increased ease is streogthoned by the disbursoments- of the Treasury in payments of the interest on the seven-thirty loan, and the return flow from the West Js steadily swelling the volume of loanablo funds, The easy position of the Troasury is indicated by the large balance in the Sub-Treasury this evening—namoly, $10,727,058. The amount of first class commercial paper offering for discount is limited, and tho Best grade passes at 634 a7 percent. On Sat- urday $675,000 was disbursed here in interest on the seven-thirty loan, and yesterday $640,000, At tho open board at ten o'clock the market was bnoy- ant, Erie sold at 7493¢; Michigan Southern, 831; ; North. western, 54% a $¢—-do preferred, 80 a %4. By « now arrangement, decided upon yesterday, a con- tinuous call of stocks from ten to four now takes place at the regular board, the object apparently boing to offer facilities for the trangaction of the entire business of Wall street, thereby heading off the open board. The result Is, however, a wearisome repotition of calls, while the time over which they are distributed gives an appear. ance of tar eness to the proceedings, the more especially as there are virtually two other markets Cor stocks— Bamely, (ne open board and the lower hall of the Stock Exchanvo, in oach of which a large bustaoss is dona, Thor was a brisk demand for the leading railway shares atthe regular board, and the improvement in prices was well sustained, At twelv6 o'clock New York Gen- tral was !; higher than at the samo timo yestorday, Ene %, Michican Southern \, Miinols Ceritral 1%, Cleveland and Toledo 23, Rock Islaad 14, Northwestorn 1¢do, preferred 5, Fort Wayno %, Ohio and Mississippi cer- iMleatas ¥, Atlantic Mall 1 Michigan Central was % lower, ‘oveland and Pittaburg 3, Government Beourities were firm. Tho gold market apeved firm at 13834, but gradually deciined to 137} a &% at the close of business. Loaus were goncrally made ‘flat’ and at3a4 per cent for carrying. The failure of the Ways and Means Coramit- tee to aot upon Mr. Boutweli’s bill providing for tha palo of two millions of government gold per werk has pro- duced no perceptible offect upon the pryminm ia the course of speculation. The syecislabens are generally @nxious that it should pass, as, if Carried into effect, it would svon place them in Cony.) of the market. At present the Treasury hoard Woyeps down the premium and kills speculation, at if this hoard were to be reduced tm eng manner provided by At the market was a the bit referred, 49 the Gold Room would take the sold, “and the Treasury would 20 ‘longer'be able to 7 snuence the course of the premium. {t would bo a8’ tptoas as it was Jast May, when the panic in Engi’ nq cansed more than thirty millions of gold to be W iyped from this country within a few weeks in retura ¥ or our sogurities previously held abroad and in 1q05 ,tion of our commercial indebtedness to Europe. This fe + snggests the danger which constantly attends 1b P osseasion of fouror five hundred millions “bf our ‘®6Y srities by foreigners in Europe, who cau demand ‘Y sh for thom at any time. Herein Jies a bar to the re- sumption of specie payments, although a still more formidabio ono exists in the fact that seven hundred millions of three years seven-thirty notes, redeemable ta currency at maturity, or convertible into five-twentios, at the option of the holder, are till oxtstanding. To taik of contraction and a re, acmption of specie payments undor such circumstances only does harm by preventing the funding of seven. thirty notos, disturbing tho channels of trade and exciting faise hopes and fears in the minds of tho people. ‘The currency should be allowed to remain wationary; or, if thors is any contraction, it should be confined to compound interest notes, commencing with tweety millions a year and deacending at the rate of five milona ao year to five millions only. To contract the Jegal tender notes at & more rapid rate than this would tnvotve danger to the mational banks, whose notes are redoemabic in legal tenders, on demand; and, so long as he national bank currency is not ropinced by legal fenders, this consequence must be kept in view. ‘The moothiy rangos of gold since the beginning of the yoar is tans shown :— F it” ee 4 eis deat i 45 My ‘ Rovewbor. 148 is ces RY os Shove is sone Megeliy to Wetlatons for foreign bills of exchange, "bat the market ie on the whole about seedy. Jarger per contage of SKATING. ee Aiienedal Concert—Skating at the Fifth Avenue Park and the Brooklyn Ponds. Mr. McMillan yesterday had a decided advantage over his fellow proprietors of skating ponds, for the Fifth Avenue Park was the only lake in the city whereupon & broad, thick aurface of ice offered a fair field for the enthusiasts of the sport. At two o'clock Dodworth’s full band—comprising forty plecos, under the leader- ship of Harvey B. Dedworth—was on the spot, and executed in masterly style the ‘morceaux of well-selected programme. Tho skating community gathered in force, aud to the sounds of sweet music, the stool-ahod lads ond lassies glided to and Hess of the chaos of mud and slush visible be- your mite of the lake, At night the pond Was Haminated and the attendance of akators largo, Those afternoon concerts will become a marked pare of the soason at MeMillan’s Park, and the lovers of molody. as well as the patrons of our metropolitan Tinks, will have every inducement to patronize the apany who thus endeavors to merit public encourage- ‘fro, ‘THR SPORT IN BROOKLYN, There was quite a number of visitors to the Capitoline, Talon and Chichester skating rinks yesterday morning, on all of which ponds the ice remained in pretty fair condition until noon, when tho mild temperature of tho atmosphere, which prevailed at that time, somewhat softened the surface, Judging from the present state of the weather it is fair to presume that the ball wil! be up this morning, an other opportuuity offered for tndul- gence in this exhilarating pastime. ores ee THE SECOND AVENUE CALAMITY.
