M. ‘The stock market opened with a buoyant tone this morning, and there wasa strong demand for all the leading railroad shares, and particularly Northwestern, Erie and Michigan Souttern, The very favorable state. ment of the associated baiks for the week ending on the 16th instant stimulated the bull element to increased activity, by strengthenitg confidence in prolonged monetary ease at this centr, and the indications are that the bulls will control the course of prices for. a considerable fime to come. The state- mént referred to apowed an increase in legal tender notes of $3,047,454, and in deposits of $2,781,449, owing mainly to the dain from the West and other parts of the interior, The loans have decreased $2,167,697, owing to # patural decrease in the demand and a distribution of aoards by the bears on the Stock Exchange. CLOUD CORRESPONDENCE. ‘The Red River Honte to Selkirk Settlomont— ‘Tho Postmaster Giencral and Mail Service to Montana—Neglect of the Northera Fron- ther-Abundance of Game—General Terry’s Soldier—Rallroads Buffalo Hunt—Loss of a and Crops—Climate and Resources of Min- meseta—Sir Morton Peto’s Romurks—Opper- tunities Under the Homestead Act, &e. ‘Sr. Croup, Minn,, Deo, 11, 1866, In the summer of 1861 the Hunatp publishod news from Selkirk Settlement, which had been brought down from there tn nine days by the ordinary mode of travel ‘then in use, Since then there bas beon a material ad, vance in the development of the country along that part of the route lying this side the Red river of the North. If the Indian title to Northern Dakotah had been extin- gulshed the same as the Southern portion of that Territory, settlements would have sprung up ere this on the western banks of the Red river of the North and its ‘Dumerous tributaries, auch{as the Cheyenteand Wild Rice, To have thus obstructed an important part of Governor Steven's old route was at least @ blunder on the part of those who made and ratified the Indian treaty. ‘Tho Minnesotians are anxious to open a route to Mon- tana, via Fort Union, The practicability of such a route has been shown repeatedly during the past two or throe J years, by successfully sending through emigrant and ‘wagon trains, There is an act of Coggress authorizing the Postmaster Generd to establish mail service op this Berthern route to sfoptana; and we ace disappointed that this act has not been carried into effect. Why should there bo so much hangtng back in doing some- thing useful for the northern frontier? In ‘Peveril of @ Poak’’ Walter Scott makes the Saxon compiaii use the hog is called by the Saxon word swine, whilo he waliows in the mire, but ia known by the Norman word pork after he is fit for the table. Our complaint is of making flesh of one and fow! of another ‘The plain trath is tt has been too common to txnore poetics moet Before the war, and Perbaps since, the cavairy regular army was used to guard the southern frontier; but not even a platoon of Fegular cavalry was ever seen up this way {t would bave been eonvenient if there had been a few squadrons on our frontier the fall af '62, Thus is the season for game, and it i# abundant. A few pone the Sioux and Winnobago Indians used to bunt the neighborhood of our outer settlements; but thase twibos having been removed further Wost, there is much more game for the settlers, Venison and cranberries are natural products of Mmnesota. Major General Terry, on coming to assume command Of his department, came up the ri river and via Forts Rice and Wadsworth. While in Dakotah he had « daffrio hunt, and was siso lucky enough to shoot an antelope. In a charge upon a herd of buflaloes, the General was thrown from his horse.and somewhat in- jared. Unfortunately, one of the oacort, « soldier, went too far in the charge and was lost. We have now upwards of three hundred miles of rail- road in operation in Minnesota, and the ensuing yoar we shall add one hundred or two hundred miles iuore, if nothing uncommon happens, The wheat crop thi« season was not far trom ten millions of buwhels—considerably loss than last year, It is not all threshed yet. It was once a popular error that a witness could not awenr to what he mw through gtass, [hope tt is no longer « popular error that the climate of Minnesota ts unfavorable to agriculture, We have our-cold spells and warm spells even in the winter. { presume it wan mild in New York a couple of w 0. One word now about a matter of national tmportanc Ja course of the past twenty yoars the two States of New Hampshire and Vermont have grown affinent by farming and stock raising, Vermont, perhaps, having taken the lead in fine stock, ‘The climate of Minnesota resembles are more uuiform and dry—less broken toto by thaw», We already enjoy many of the comforts and the plenty ‘Unone states, NEW YORK “HERALD, TURSDAY) DECEMBER "18, 1866-rRivLY Serer.
