LOPER, over Rotor or ree Prucapkirnia Lxquineu:— ‘Sueyour paper of this date, under the editorial head, 7 fud 2 communication headed ‘An Ocean Race.” In remarks under the above head you have done great . jee, not only to the gentlemen owners of yachts in New York, Boston, Philadelphia and elsewhere, but you tteck our Philadelphia mechanics when you say that fhe skill of modelling vessels is of no benefit to our country. Remember, sit, that I have constructed and have had built fu this city three of the fastest yachts of abetr class ever built in this country—namely, tbe Ame- rica, the pleasure yacht of tue Emoress of Brazil; the Madgie, now owned by Commo- dere William H. The Palmer’ is the fastest yacht in the world, ‘m my opinion, and I am ready to back up m: ‘opinion by accepting a challenge to sail, for a set of sil- ver, with any yacht in this or any other country. Thomas Fitz- gerald, one of the several young men irom Norfolk who created the disturbance, died to-day of his injuries. The other three injured are ali in a bad way, but will get well. Quite lengthy examination has been had beiore the Mayor, and a more extended investigation will be made by the Coroner in an inquisition to be held over the remaius of the person killed, After the fighting was over the place where the disturbance occurred was set on fire, and before the firo coulda be extinguished four buildings and most of their contents were destroyed. The buildings were small wooden tenements of little account, and altogether the troublesome and disreputably vicious character of the inmates makes it a subject of congratulation that they were destroyed. Two or three of the young men impli- cated in the affair bave fled the city. A the facts show that the young men inciting the row were on a night's spree, and, as is not unfrequently the case on such occa- itended more disastrousiy than was anticipated, Tho original blame cannot be on the negroes, and there was no riot aboat it, but simply a violont and approvoked assault of a fow white men.
