One of the most fearful and fatal mine shaft explo- sions which has ever taken place in the coal districts of England occurred at the Oaks colliery, near this town, ft one o’clock in the afternoon of to day. ‘The scene of the fatal casualty is the most extensive eoal pit in tho district, the shaft rcnning to « depth of twe hundred and seventy yards.
