In about half an hour after the adjournment the calendars came to hand. It isa well known fact that the Supreme Court is overcrowded with business, and it is a watter of regret that it should be further retarded by such neglect or omission on the part of those who, by their monopoly, are enabled to reap such large pecuniary advantages from the labor which they have undertaken to perform for the public. —_— COUNT OF OYER AND “ERMINER. For some time past the authorities of the Post Office Department in this city have been receiving numerous complaints about missing registered letters, in which were enclosed, in all instances, various amounts of money. The result was of course to increase the vigi- lance of the higher officials, who, after close watching, got reason to suspect a certain young man in the office asthe delinquent, This young man, whose name, for certain prudential reasons, cannot at present be men- tioned, is most respectably connected, and has for a Jong time been employed in the newspaper bagging de- partment of the Post Office. His duties were to bag the Bae are of newspapers, but among those, when the are emptied, letters are often found mixed with the pers, which are returned to theproper department, but which certain conduct on the of this young man led Mr. Gaylor, ni Beata agent of the Post Office De- partment, to su did not do, but qn the contrary carried them to there selected the registered letters, taking out ‘there contents and returning the oth- ers of no value to their proper places, was of course but a suspicion; a watch was then set upon his action, which resulted in his beiag seen to secrete a package of letters and afterwards select from it some that were registered. He was about leaving the office, but was stopped and brought into a private room, where were Mr. Gaylor and one or two officials, and on being searched a registered letter and a bank book were found in his possession, In the face of such undeniable evi- dence the unfortunate young man confessed his guilt and was immediately nted before United States Commissioner White, who committed him in default of spr moges The case will come out for hearing in a days, when it is expected the prisoner will plead “guilty THE ALLEGED DISTILLERY FRAUDS. Continuation of the Examination of Wit- nesses—The Prosecution Closed, &c. 4 Before Commissioner Newton. The examination of the case of the United States, vs. Messrs, Angus, Schwabins, Rowe and Boehm, for alleged manufacture of alcohol under the namb of “burning fluid,” was continued yesterday, in Brooklyn, beforo Commissioner Newton. The first witness called by the prosecution was Dr, Squibb, who testified substantially as follows :— TESTIMONY OF DR. KR, SQUIBB, T reside at 110 Columbia stroet, Brooklyn; am a prac- tical chemist; am casually acquainted with burning tiuid; burning fluid is practically made by mixing alcohol and turpentine; I do not know of any fluid made with less per centage of tw tine than twenty per cent; alcohol must be rectified to about ninety-five per cent to cut or dissolve turpentine; burning fluid is a complete solution and not a mixture, at least asa commercial article; the whole of it will burn without a ciminution of illamiuation; when an excess of turpentine is added toa solution the turpentine would be consumed in the greatest quantit; a alcohol in the next greatest, and water in the least; there is @ proportion of the three which is not inflammable, Mr. Dittenhoofer here roquested that a portion of common burning fluid should be placed in a lamp, a por- tion of the article in dispute im another, both set burn- ing and presented to the doctor, to see if he cou! stn.
