2 FINANCIAL _AND COMMERCIAL. ixpay, Nov. 4, 1866, There was increased speculative activity in the rail- way sbare market last week, the volume of business being enormous and the dealings attended with great ‘At intervals the rush to bay was fully equal to any similar scenes incident to former specula- tive periods on the Stock Exchange, and the temper of the street was never more decidedly bullish, The tran- actions were on the whole well distributed, but special altention was directed to Ere aud the Northwestern shares, which fluctuated somewhat widely, The former rose to 86 vader a strong demand, but finslly closed at 64 & %, while the latter ranged from 57 to 63, closing at 59% a Jy. The preferred stock was in good demand and rose at one time to 82, the iv. ference on the part of the public being that it is reia- tively cheaper than the common stock. The common stock is, however, the speculative favorite, especially with Western mon, some of whom argue in favor of a closer permanent approximation in value of the two clasves as in the case of Erie, This, however, can only be justitied on the assumption that the company will be | able to pay dividends on both, a prospect to which thy present large earnings of the road ultimately point. With respect to Erie, its firmness in the London market at about 613¢ in gold is not witbout induence in inspiring confidence in the stock on this side, The earnings of all the principal railroads are on such @large scale that the attention of the public is boing turned to them more than ever betore as investmunts, and particularly to the main lines extending from this centre Westward. The reopening of the Youth has already added largoly to the raliway traffic of the country, and in proportion to the revival of prosperity im the South railway gains from this source will increase, The completion of the Pacific Railway will doubt- Jess add «till more to railway receipts and proba- bly to a fur greater extent than is at present imagined. With that we shall have @ con- tinuous chain of communication by rail and steam with China and Japan, as tho first vessel belonging to the Pacitic Mail Company is advertised to leave San Fran- cisco for Yokohama and Hong Kong on the 1st of Jan- uary uext. It is pot unreasonable to suppose that this Will resuit in a large overland traffic between our Atlan- tie seaboard and the Orient, and many European travel- lers vill be likely to select this route im preference to that foliowea by the Peninsular end Orental Company's steamers. lo April next, the branch of the Northwestern road to Omaha, there connecting with the Pacific Rail- way, will bo completed. It must be remembered, too, that with the e. ception of the Grea: Western, and a vory few such extensions as this, no new railroads have beeo built in this country for many years, and that none are likely to be for many yearsto come, The ex- isting man lines have therefore a practical monopoly of the inland carrying trade of the United States, and it {8 correctly estimated that at the present cost of labor @nd material a Foad like the Erle could not be built for double the amount of its entire cap ta! stock, Among tho miscellaneous qggcks, Pacific Bail and Atlantic Mail were most active and excitod, the former advancing from 222 to 244, and the latter from 112 to 129, The advance in Atlantic was partiy im sympathy with Pacific, but till more, owing to a ‘cornering operation which we opens ™ this day's issue. Mining stocks were heavy = oan the temper of the market for them beng earls. Ta govermment securities there was vory little done, all descriptions being wegicctid, Rfthough firm with an improving tendency. ‘The gold market exhibited greater firmncss than was generally anticipated in view of the disbursoment of about twenty-four millions in payment of the November five-twenty coupons. The price advanced steadily |rom 148% on Monday to 1485, on Saturday, the dally range being amunder:— excitement. All the conditions affecting the money market tre fevorabie to prolonged ease, and those who predicted ‘8 revulsic.n 90 long a8 our currency is trredeemabie wil! Prove false prophets. We are only now reaching ue Bighest point of monetary inflation the country has “er experienced. The interests of the whole nation deonnd that nothing should be done to cause a forcedseeutnp- tion of specie payments, and Congress will vw likely to tm accordance therewith by leaving thr currency to jat= ite M, natural laws being farvetter than any whicn legisiators could devise. In “nsequence of this and the general duiness of the trve imported mer- ehandise, rpeculation on the sock Exchange will be Ukely to increase during the vemainder of the year, and the rcturn flow of currency from the West will stimulate priees to a point considerably higher than they have yet touched. If speculation ran wild on such a shallow Snancial basis as it rested upon in 1863-4, it may easily fun wilder in 1866-7. ‘The statcment of the national debt for October bas not yet made its appearance. ‘This is unbusiness like on the part of the Treasury Department to say tho least, and Yr.
