SEW YORK — fsa OCTOBER 26, 1866—TRIPLE SHEET. FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. Tuvespay, Oct. 26—6 P. M. Thore is no change to note in tho course of specula- tion on tho Stock Exchange, although the railway share ‘Market Las been more than usually fitful tay, but on ‘the wholo strong, Its stubborn upward tendency ts ehown in the quick reactions which follow every de- cline, and a fresh instance of its recuperative power was afforded this moruing. Tho temper of the market has ‘over boen so decidedly “bullish” since the commence- ‘ment of the prosont rise as it ia pow, At the same time mot as few of the old conservative stock houses which went “short” weeks and months ago are “short” still, and of all the stocks on ‘the list Erie bas perhaps been the most largely sold im (this manner. Northwestern and Michi- gan Southern contioue to lead the upward movement of the railway shares, the interest in which is daily on the Amcrease, and the higher they go the greater is their im- potus, Efforts have again been made by tho bears to ane ‘tmpression that the money market is becoming active, ‘and in order to give a color of probability to their state ments they have applied to somo of the banks for loans -of half a million and other similarly large sums, which of course they'did not require, merely for the sak@of saying thoy had been refised money by the banks at 4a & per cent, a8 of course not every bank would ‘be found cither able or willing to make such large loans ‘to a single firm without notico at the minimum rate of interest. First class houses have or could havo bor- rowed all the money they required to-day at four por Cent, and although the exceptions at five were somewhat numerous in the afternoon tho leading dealers in gov- ernment securities supplied thomselves at 3a 334. Tho -demand fur discounts is almost imperceptibly light, and the best grado passes at 5a6 por cent. The Western money market is easier and the Chicago Tritune of Wednesday says:—“ Business at most of the -discount houses was rather slow to-day, the demand for money showing quite a falling Off as compared with last week.’ It is almost needless to say that all the indications are favorable to an easy working of monetary affairs here, and low or moderate » rates of interest, ranglug say from four to six per cent, during the remainder of the year, during which specula- tion wil! bo likely to run wild. Should the President in his message to Congress ‘fecominend’ the substitution of lezal tenders for national bank notes ho will be proposing a measure greatly to the interest of the government aud country at large, and one which, if adopted, would contribute greatly to @rengihen confidence in cur monetary rystem—the agational bank currency being a weak spot in it which should be eradicated, Alihough the national bank tn- terest is powerful, there is some probability that Con- @reas, sooner or later, wili act upon oar advice in this matter. Apart from the interest which the government has to pay to keop these notes in circulation, they clog the whecis of the money market at the financial centres. At the open board at ten o'clock thero was an aggrava- tion of the slight weaknoss of yestorday afternoon, pro duced by the “hammering” of the bears and sales to Tealize proiis.
