2 FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. wuss, Oct, 20—6 P.M. ‘The stock market bad a buoyant tone this morning, bat in the afternoon most of the brokers aud speculators left the street and it became dull, while prices yielded sfightly, with the exception of the Northwestern Rail- away shares, which advanced at one time to 64’; under & strong demand, and closed firm at 5335 @ 54. ‘The money market has shown greater eage than on ‘any previous day of the week, and the supply was in ex- cess of the demand to first class houses at four per cent, while the exceptions om miscellaneous collaterals at five per cont were fewer, Some of the leading dealers in government securities are able to borrow at ‘i and 434, which indicates the real abundance of currency at this centre, At the Ist of the present month the circu- lation consisted of $293,032,905 of national bank notes and $554,677,432 of legal tenders, exclusive of State bank notes and $27,029,273 of fractional cur- reney. This large volume of paper money is having its natural effect upon the course of prices on the Stock ixehange, and we are now in the midst of greater mone tary inflation than has ever before been known in this country, the volume of currency being fifty miltions larger than it was atthe beginning of June last year, when the national bank notes in circulation amounted to only $127,772,706, although the legal tender ated $650,160,569. All this is in strong contrast with # Ke note circulation of the country antecedent to the wary which was as under ios the years mentioned :— $195, 747,950 75,822 cise es 149,185,890 2860. 1843. « 58,564,000 - ‘The bank deposits and loans of the entire country in the smo years were as follows: Depoails. $55, 560.000 2 83.081,000 a v1, . 115,104,000 January 1,18 + 127,397,000 January 1, 15 58,168,000 January |. 1s 212,700,000 January 1, 15) 230,851,000 185,982,600 258, 802,000 tock board at ton o'clock Trie sotd at Norihwestorn (gales 9,250 shares) 5134 a 13—pr , Michigan Southern 90. State bank of imdinna; yet he has assumed cinee his Promotion (o the Treasury chair an amount of foresight which he has proved himself not to possess, He has spoken and written as if the country were on the verge of ruin and laboring under great prostration, instead of being highly prosperous asit is, He once made a speech at Fort Wayne which alarmed the timid, and he has since persevered in the utterance of similar arguments, bat like the often repeated cry of wolf when there ts no wolf, his words have lost their power, aud people emile at what they before respected, however little they may have been convinced, The Secretary of the Treasury has at the present time no 100re control over the fnan- cial condition and destinies of this country than if he were not Secretary of the Treasury, He cannot move beyond fixed limits with regard to the currency, for Congress has passed an act which limits the reduction of United States motes to ten millions during the six months, not yet expired, following the date of its passage, and thereafter at a rate not exceeding four millions per month, The war expenditures having ceased, he bas little discrotionary power, except as to funding the floating interest bearing debt, and upon his propet management of tuis his reputation mainiy de- pends, ‘Thus far his conduct in this particular has not beea entirely satisfactory, while his transactions affect- ing gold have boen open to serious criticism. One great consoling fact, however, remains; the country is pros- perous beyond the most sanguine expectations, and practical reconstruction is alone wanted to ralize the desires of all, Then we may look for lees onerous taxa- tion and a still higher degree of prosperity, but mean- while the country wil! have to pass through a sea of po- litical troubles, SALES AT THE NEW YORK STOCK EXCHANGE, et. 20—10:30 A.
