2 FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. Tavespay, Oct, 18—6 P, M. ‘Tho stock market has exhibited a very buoyant tone to-day and the beara of yesterday are entirely discon- certed in consequence. Some of them have been et deavoring to ‘cover’ their “‘shorts,’’ but as fast as they tried to do ao prices advanced uppn them, and the result of thoir operations thus far in the week is a heavy loss, Not only have those of their number who were previ- ‘ously “bulls”? lost their cash stock, but they find them- selves called upon to borrow stock to make their deliveries on ‘short’? account, to be forced to buy which at current prices would inflict upon them serious loss. The prospect is at the same time favorable to further loss in proportion to the rise of prices. The upward tendency of railway shares is of the moat decided character, and the rise has evidently far from culminated. The chief interest of the market is just now centred in the Northwestern shares, which rose nearly four per cent during the day, under heavy trans-' actions, based mainly upon the greatly increased earn- ings of the road, which are attracting the attention of investors to 1. In the other leading shares there was a woll-disiributed business at advancing prices, New York Contral selling up to 12044. Many who became bears in tho early part of the week have turned bulls again, the strength of speculation for a rise having been proven by the recent ‘bear’ raid, and so inspired fresh confidence in it among those who were before wavering ‘The attempt to create an impression that the money market was tightening has utterly fatied, a fate which ultimately awaits everything false, The report, too, that the government was selling gold has been officially con- tradicted, although it is admitted that some of the hold- ers of the bonds of 1867 and 1868 have been shown an inexcusable piece of favoritism in the payment of the principal of the same im gold in advance of their matu- rity, while an equal privilege has mot been extended to the other holders of these secu- rities, Tho supply of money available for use on the Stock Exchange is in excess of the demand, and loans were made freely to-day at four per cent to first class houses and 4 a 5 to speculative firms, with exceptions at 3 a 34 to a few dealers in government securities, all the conditions affecting the money market being favorable to prolonged ease. At tho ton o'clock open board the stock market showed signs of a sharp recovery from the depression of last even- “ing Northwestern 44%—preferred 1414, Michigan Southern 9014, New York Central 118%. At the first regular board the improving tendency of prices was further developed in a strong demand for all the leading railway shares:—New York Central closed 3 higher than at the same time yesterday, Erie preferred 4, Michigan Southern 1;, Quicksilver %. Erie was *% lower, Hudson River 1, Reading %, Minois Ceptral %, Cleveland and Pittsburg %, Rock Island 3%, North- western %4—preferred %, Fort Wayne 1, Chicago and Alton %, Ohio and Mississippi certificates 3, Mariposa preferred %. Government securities were firm. Coupom sixes of 1881 showed an advance of 34, five-twenties of 1862 4, seven-thirty notes of the first series 14. The other stocks were steady. North Carolina sixes were %{ lower. At the one o'clock sessions prices continued to advance, and Northwestern rose to 4714, while Erie sold at 83, Now York Central at 12034 and Michigan Southern at 90%. At the half-past two board Northwestern dlosed 2 per cent higner than at the first regular board, preferred 3%, Pittaburg 4, Rock Island 14, Fort Wayne 34, Alton and Torre Heute 134, Cumberland %. At the three o'clock open board there was a very strong market, attended by @ further advance, Northwestern leading the upward movement. New York Central sold at 120% (b. 3), Erie 8334, Hudson 127%, Reading 1155, Michigan Southern 0034, Tilinois Central 120%{,- Cleveland and Pittsburg 9234, Cloveland and Toledo ex. d, 121, Northwestern 47% —proferred 753 (b. 3), Fort Wayne 1009%, @umber- land 5834, Quicksilver 563, Mariposa preferred 20, Westero Union Telegraph 6434. After the call North- western sold up to 48, in the midst of great ex- citement. The common stock of the latter road amounts to $13,160,027 at its par value, and the pre- forred to $12,994,719, The road is 679 miles long, in- cluding the branches, and its earnings from the 1st of June last to theend of the first week of the present month were $3,786,068, or $87,186 larger than those for (the correspouding period last year. The market con- tinued strong up tothe close of business, and at half-past five the following quotations were current:—New York Contral 120% a 34, Erie 83% 84, Hudson 127% a 128, Michigan Southern 903; 8 4, Illinoia Central 127 0 %, Rook Island 10834 = %, North Wostern 47% a 48, Pre- forred 7534 a 3¢, Fort Wayne 1104 3, Oh‘o and Missis- sippt Cortificates 33%; a, Quicksilver 563; a 5, Mari- posa preferred 29 0 The gold market was firm but free from excitement. The opening price was 1483¢, followed by a decline of 1 and a steady advanceto 148%. From this point it re- Inpoed to 1485,, the quotation at four P.M. There was & very light borrowing demand for coin, and loans were made at 1-32 « 1-04 per cent in favor of the lender and “flat.” Mining shares were strong and excited, the demand boing mainly for Colorado gold stocks. The transactions in Corydon, at the first board, aggregated 5,100 shares at $7 10 a $7 40, an advance of 40c, per share upon the closing price at the second board yesterday. The stock of the Nye Geld Mining Company was also actively in demand at 62c. a 65c. Davidson Copper was quoted at $2 At the second board the excitement in Corydon inoreased, and the sales aggregated 4,600 shares, the atook solling up to $7 85, an advance of 46c, upon the bigheat price touched at the first board. Some attributed the sudden advance to a “short” in. terest, but the majority assigned it to the unexpected developments at tho mine, the stock being generally a favorite with buyers who avoid the ‘fancy’ shares, The mining speculation is absorbing more at- tention than it bas done for years past, and petroleum stocks bave fallen into utter neglect. The foreign exchange market continues very firm and modorately active. Bankers’ bills on England at sixty days aro quoted at 1083; a34, at three days 109 a \, commercial 107 a %.
